elmacho  said about 5 years ago:

Just walk in quick and try and avoid the friday night cockhead convention, that happens on the tables outside

littlearch  said about 5 years ago:

i hate it

lordsnot  said about 5 years ago:

hasn't really been an interesting band there for a while. used to have a lot of good stuff in there. but yeah, big cockhead convention venue

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

oh, i've only been there once in the past year, i should add

michael_horse  said about 5 years ago:

switchbladesisters  said about 5 years ago:

no sir, I don't like it.

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

There has been some cracker shows there - I saw Youth Group and Redsunband there.

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Geez, lighten up. It's fine.

elmacho  said about 5 years ago:

The sound is good, the stage is good, it's a good place to see bands... but it just doesn't fulfil it's potential.

Brunny st...RIP

Ambo  said about 5 years ago:

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

Bar Open is awesome - except for only being able to buy Jugs of beer downstairs.

michael_horse  said about 5 years ago:

i'd never call any bar infested with hippies and backpackers "awesome"

That is a KILLER show.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

i was just about to mention to evelyn being a bit nicer than some of the scummier bars in this town, and then everyone starts praising bar open.

figures.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

Melbourne Bands books it, yes?

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

No. Melbourne bands don't book the evelyn.

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

Two awesome dudes called Paul and Marcus book the evelyn.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

ah, I don't know why I thought that. Ta, bradm.

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

I thought that too, Kuro. I'm sure they've mentioned that they do in their "who we are" or whatever bullshit i've read by them.

tilljames  said about 5 years ago:

its a great place to play.
good sound system, good stage.

good for bands who hate playing shit stages like old bar and can't really get enough people to fill say an EBC or NSC. It's a good middle sized joint.

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

They did mention the evelyn. Them saying they "Book the evelyn" most likely refers to that they have put on a show or two in the past. They just chose to word it differently.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

this is from the MB Myspaz:

Currently seeking acts for /March/April at The Evelyn Hotel. Acts must have a strong following and be promotional masters!! Seeking quality professional signed and unsigned acts for dates at Manchester Lane. Acts should be well known and have established fanbase as well as strong radio play.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

MELBOURNEBANDS on MySpace books live music gigs at several Melbourne area clubs, including The Evelyn Hotel, and Manchester Lane. Call for details. * As of December, Gene Hall has resigned as the venue manager for Barbukka. Best of luck to the owner.

I guess that means the're basically a proxy manager for bands to book them into those venues with the relevant venue booker?

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

It may say that, but I can assure you PAUL GOODWIN and MARCUS WHITTY book The Evelyn.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

Best of luck to the owner

love that bit.

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

hey kurenko, from what I can make from it, they basically put together lineups (as does anyone band/s) and them approaches said venues to try and get a night.

I may be wrong here tho. Does anyone have the full story?

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

yeh, that's what I thought, Brad. MBs seem more like an agency rather than bookers.

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

Well, not really an agency, its not like they have specific bands on their books, as they are asking for all bands to contact them....an agency would be picky as to what bands they take on board.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

so, they're a middle man for bands too lazy to pick up the phone themselves? ;)

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

I reckon. I would be interested in knowing their 'cut' from these gigs they organise.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

do they still pay themselves if the band doesn't get paid because they "failed to effectively promote themselves" ?

bradmurray  said about 5 years ago:

ha!

Do they get a rider?

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

OF COURSE NOT. No partners on the door, either.

ando  said about 5 years ago:

I don't mind the Evelyn, but I find it a bit soulless. It's a good size, good PA, lights, etc, but it can feel a bit cold in there. Vibe-wise, anyway - it's one of the hottest stages I've ever played on.

I've noticed they tend to charge a bit on the door too, which is both good and bad - more money for bands, but can put people off.

etiquetteyet?  said about 1 year ago:

What's the Evelyn like these days? Looking to get some bands a gig and haven't been tempted to go there this past year I've lived in Melbourne. Is that saying something?

etiquetteyet?  said about 1 year ago:

anyone? come on dudes.

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

are you in a funk band?

de Campo  said about 1 year ago:

Great big no.

etiquetteyet?  said about 1 year ago:

not a funk band. Should I be?

Goal attack  said about 1 year ago:

The Evil Lyn had lots of those bands that do 'industry showcases' for a while, then had some good gigs (ie bands I like) on about a year ago, where are they at now? Live skip hop bands? The aforementioned funk?

Morris Iemma  said about 1 year ago:

A modified dog.

Manhattan  said about 1 year ago:

eucalyptus  said about 1 year ago:

Tiana from the Orphanage is the new booker, this is a good thing.

JJ  said about 1 year ago:

its ok...sound is alright but the atmosphere is a bit lacking. They are getting some better bands these days. Mixing it with brunswick st shitbags is quite undesirable though
