i'd suggest hitting ebay for dictaphones.

fulton girls club  said about 5 years ago:

dude, just get a dictaphone, my mom has one and i use to record alot of my stuff and it's great.

squircle  said about 5 years ago:

iPods now do good recording too if you have one.

not my shitty 8 bit 4th gen

manchild  said about 5 years ago:

whats the new bitrates/formats for the ipods?

i have an iriver H40 and it does an ok job of recording, especially with an external mic.

versionsporadic  said about 5 years ago:

16 bit, aiff / wav, or mp3 etc

dsico  said about 5 years ago:

i got one of these Zoom Handy H4 recorders.
Electret Microphones built in - but you can even pug in a Phantom power condenser
4 track recording mode as well as Stereo

I bought one on Mailorder from some place in the USA for about $400AUD
Aus RRP is about $599 i think

sounds real good. and the 4 track is fun if you are off in the bush with just a guitar or something

whosgotthecrack?  said about 5 years ago:

there's a great thread about this stuff moses

hang on, i'll do a search (ffs :)

whosgotthecrack?  said about 5 years ago:

meh i can't find it

but this thing is pretty good. it's $1000 but it's got every functionality i dream of

not cheap

neither is this one...

but i research this stuff pretty often and i reckon they're the best

a portable minidisc with a little digital mic would do the job perfectly well though, but i don't like the transfer systems or the 'record record press stop then write' thing they do

i cant believe i wrote 'write know' instead of 'right now' in my first post

Hi there,

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with the Zoom H4?

I am looking at investing in one for jam sessions and on the road to document ideas.

dsico  said about 4 years ago:

Yeah I have one got it a few months ago, Machine + 2Gb Memory Stick (which is heaps)
Haven't used it much except for:

  • recorded some ''Bootleg'' style shows. from the Audience with the built in mics: Sounded better than I expected (for a mic in the middle of the room)

  • Went away on Holiday with just a guitar and Headphones and H4. Amused myself a couple of afternoons with the 4 track Mode just overdubbing guitars and multiple vox tracks.

  • Recorded a Friends Bands Rehearsal session with just it but some thought to where you position it and it sounds pretty good for a single mic in the room

Its relatively Cheap and bloody tiny.
I bought a Camera Case and a Camera mini Tripod and can carry around everything i need for it in that.
Battery Life is pretty good on a Set of AAs. one set will get a you a few hours recording.

However.

  • I can't get Rechargeable Batteries to work - (they are not full voltage)
  • the stand attachment is a Camera style screw in thing NOT a MIC Stand one. so you need a Camera Tripod instead of a Mic Stand. Unless you can get an converting attachment.
  • The stand attachment is held on with weird straps that you have to remove to change memory card or batteries. Which can be annoying.

dsico  said about 4 years ago:

oh and apparently the original software had a problem with recording in 256 Kbps Mp3 mode, but that has been fixed with a software upgrade.

ladyboy  said about 4 years ago:

we got a zoom h4. early recordings (without reading manual) have come up pretty well (bass, 2xguitars, vox, drums). positioned correctly & set up properly it should pick up everything really well. Does a heap of shit.

The LowDown  said about 4 years ago:

Thanks for getting back to me. This is primarily for things you have been using yours for so that information is very helpful.

Given your time over, would you buy one again?
Can you plug multiple instruments directly into the recorder at once?
What is the sound quality like?

there has been some talk over at the field recording section of the 12k forums

i'm keen to get something like the Tascam. I love my mindisc but I'd love something I can quickly download recordings from in a 'normal' format'.

hey feral, we use the PMD660 at uni and it's pretty awesome.

I've been considering one of the alesis protracks:

Record stereo audio directly to your iPod with ProTrack. Capture live sound on your iPod anywhere and anytime without a single cable, and with one hand free! Just dock your iPod and cover it with the protective clear shield, and you're ready to roll.

You can record detailed, 16-bit, 44.1kHz or 22kHz stereo digital audio without connecting any additional equipment using ProTrack's onboard pair of cardioid condenser microphones. The on-board mics are fixed in XY configuration for optimal stereo imaging. ProTrack also has a pair of combo XLR-1/4'' inputs enabling you to connect any professional sound source, including condenser and dynamic microphones and mixer outputs. Whether you are running on plug-in or battery power, ProTrack supplies 48V phantom power to its inputs for operation with external condenser microphones.

I've got a Zoom H4n. It's awesome for interviewing. It's also awesome for musica. It's awesome.

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

I hate the buttons on those Zaph.

Zaphod  said about 2 years ago:

Hate!

Really? They work fine for me. Having an external (ie, not via interface) input level is awesome helpful.

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

Sorry, I was getting it mixed up with the H4 - which I loathed!

Zaphod  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, a friend has the H4, and the lack of external functionality almost put me off Zooms. The n addresses a lot of the problems inherent in the H4 standard.

I recently recorded an audio porno on it.

Aren't Edirol R-09s sold for obscene prices in Australia?

I got a Edriol R-09HR with a 10gig card for 300 bucks including shipping from some warehouse in Alabama. The sound from the internal mics always surprises me.

anorakhighst  said about 2 years ago:

I bought an Olympus LS-10 a while ago, and am quite pleased with it; the sound quality is excellent, and it's a good size (about that of an old-fashioned dictaphone).

I have been using it for recording live gigs; some recordings are here.

calico  said about 2 years ago:

i got an edirol r-09hr and it's been great.

runoutgroove  said about 2 years ago:

that edirol still going great calico?

SGH  said about 2 years ago:

R09 has no phantom power for condensors. Not a dealkiller, but worth remembering if you think you might need that down the track.

anyone got one of these?
