ROLLER DERBY AUSTRALIA!
This is the call out to all the Australian gals who want to strap on a pair of skates, love bruises and want to be a Derby Girl! I am sure there are a few tough monoers who can take this...
Where else can you combine athletics, attitude and dress up for women - burlesque meets the X-Games! This is a fabulous way to get some exercise and YES, there is a need for every body type and it doesn't matter if you haven't skated in years, that's what training is for!
How is Roller Derby played?
Australian Derby will be in compliance with the WFTDA regulations and requirements. Basically there are two teams of five skaters each. Each team has one scoring position called a jammer - and the jammer starts at the back. The rest of the skaters are called blockers, and they form what we call a pack. The blockers get a head start on the jammers, going at the first whistle, then the jammers start sprinting at the second whistle. The jammers have to get through the pack and back around anoher lap before they can start scoring. On their second and future trips through, they get a point for every opponent they pass. Everyone else tries to stop the other teams' jammer from passing.
Do you have what it takes?
Here is the list of basic requirements:
- You must be female (sorry boys, but we would love you to help out with coaching, announcing, refereeing, set up, clean up, you name it!)
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must be willing to skate up to 3 times per week (evenings and weekends)
- You must provide your own gear (skates, knee and elbow pads, wrist and mouth guards and a helmet)
- You must have a great attitude
- You can skate smoothly and in control (no arms flailing)
- You can make a controlled stop (without falling or running into a wall)
- You can make a corner doing a crossover (step-crossing one skate over the other)
- You can keep a fairly fast pace (to keep up with a pack of skaters)
Do I Get Paid?
No, this is a volunteer and for the love of the sport. You will be required to pay a membership fee for rink rental for practice and various team costs, purchase your own gear which includes quad roller skates, uniform (according to your teams choice), Protective gear that includes, at a minimum wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, mouth guards and a helmet.
WHO WE NEED:
We need Queensland, New South Wales, Victioria, ACT, South Australia, Western Australia, Nortern Territory and Tasmania Leagues, Managers, Teams, Coaching, Referees, Floor Crews, Announcers, DJs, and the list continues...This is all on a volunteer basis, let's get this sport going in Australia and show the US and UK what the Aussie gals are made of!
visit the australian roller derby association myspace page for more. do it!!!

I know the Sydney team has been practising and doing fund raising events for a few months now. I don't think they've had any matches yet.
here's their blog
heard a interview with some of the melb team, same situation.
couple of weeks back
yeah, sydney roller derby league had a very successful raffle day a few weeks back at camperdown bowlo. cleared about $2K. they're still a while off actually playing... training weekly though out at emu plains and thornleigh. severe lack of venues in sydney.
I got new roller skates for my berfday. HOPEFULLY I WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH TO JOIN THIS VERY SOON.
from what i saw on the raffle day, ability is not paramount as long as you look good in hot pants. you're a shoe in voxy!
too much tartan
1st bout 16th Feb at this venue
Ark.. I want to do this so badly.
