Touristy shit in Melbourne

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago  or at  4:12PM on Friday, January 5 2007 in chat

Come to think of it, what touristy shit is there in Melbourne?

Bars and cafes down laneways are probably more a part of Melbourne life... but there must be something cool?

I have much more time in Melbourne to fill with this person. I was thinking of maybe going down to Torquay or Lorne for a night or something...

Suggest stuff, motherbitches!

is your friend a music person? dinking person? Coffee Person? rich person? sex person? club person? surfer? poor? all of the above?

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Music person, drinking person not sure about coffee, not rich, not sexual/sexy, maybe a clubber, but I'd rather not go to those places, not a surfer - but probably a beach chick, yes poor and no, not all of the above, because you can't be poor AND rich...

Unless you're monetarily poor and rich in LOVE.

I just went to Melbourne with my bf and loved it... from a Sydney resident's point of view indeed the cafe's and the bars and the laneways were the highlight.

We also loved Brunswick St, and we went to St Kilda on a Sat night, and went for tram rides and went to the gardens and went to the markets and went to Chapel St and ACMI...

But we did all of that in 3 days. If they're there for longer I think a trip to Lorne is a good idea... I've been there too!

motherbitch  said about 5 years ago:

drive to lorne for the day. there is a great health food place tucked in below some trees just as you cross that bridge where the caravan park is. I havn't been for years but it might be ther. best lentil burger (coming from someone who ate about 20 sausages in the last 10 hours.
I would show them Synesthesia at least and Missing Link while youre close.
I guess brunswick street would be interesting for someone who hasny been there. Black cat for a beer, Newtown SC for coffee (shuts at 5pm though) Bimbos for a pizza.
Degraves st? for dining. The order or Melbourne (was there last night and loved it. no one in there but it's just nice. St Jeromes for a perve, Bar Open on fri the 12th to see Outrun play.
There is a rad exhibition on at the main gallery (whats it called? just near VCA? national gal;lery? japanese anime and hentai artist. guy who made astro boy . he's awsome. i think it's still on. ACCA, worth looking at.

Torquay is so busy this time of year. i used to live there and i would not like to be there this time of year. though Pointy addis is nice and where they filmed the end scene of romperstomper.

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Well I live near Brunswick St, so that's obviously on the cards.

I haven't been to the Order of Melbourne yet, but I've heard of it.

If only Wobbies World was still open. (I protested its closure holding up a sign saying "We've been wobbed!")

Take 'em to Half Moon Bay beach and get fish and chips.

Take a boozy picnic to Carlton or Edinburgh Gardens. Or St Kilda Botanic Gardens is nice too.

Is Camberwell Market back on?

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Oooh, Camberwell market is a good idea.

how about discovering the unpretentious delights that Bacchus Marsh have to offer!?
it's got a speedway set in a volcanic crater, and the Australian Speed Car championships are on there in March. Another huge tourist drawcard to Bacchus Marsh is the impressive 'Big Apple' down the road on the Avenue Of Honour. Also popular is McDonalds, and convieniently located opposite Maccas is KFC, both with drive through AND a car park. yep, bacchus marsh....it's got it all!

Go to Melbourne Zoo...I would say its one of the best zoos in the world....especially compared to the horrible and cruel zoos here in Japan... Melbourne zoo has that new elephant walk thing too which I havent seen yet.

at least the buffet is exotic at japanese zoos, if you catch my drift

i aint been on it but some senior aged people i was talking to recently raved about it!

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

I've heard that restaurant tram is pretty pricey...

I'd give it a shot though... as long as we don't end up on the one that goes down to Camberwell or somewhere lame like that.

Ok, so Melbourne has an awesome museum and galleries and bars and cafes.

Is there something really touristy to take someone to from New York?

Was thinking of rooftop bar later on, but what about late arvo?

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

Has to be in CBD/close to CBD and after 4pm. I was thinking maybe ACMI?

fzchk  said about 1 year ago:

something really touristy

Aquarium? The ''Melbourne'' part of the museum...ummm....Puffing Billy? I'm thinking REALLY touristy. The botanic gardens are nice for a walk, but it might be too hot for that. Sometimes the state library has some sweet exhibitions.

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

I keep thinking this says 'Tortoisy' shit in Melbourne, and the only thing I can really think of is Casey Rice.

Maybe you should go to ACMI or ACCA, the Aquarium, the Museum, the Immigration Museum (?), the NGVs. Or Philip Island.

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

Yeh the aquarium is a good idea. Thinking the aquarium or ACMI and fed sq and rooftop bar. Yeh a bit too hot for the gardens, that's why we're meeting later on today, not too hot!

Icehouse? This isn't some kind of rehab clinic is it?

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

hmm, im guessing the dudes from new york, he's probably done that ice skating thing a few times, but thanks untold/animals for your always relevant suggestions

I had this same problem trying to show a friend around town the other day... he wanted to see 'melbourne', but then I felt bad cos all I usually do on my days off is drink.

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

lulz.

fzchk  said about 1 year ago:

melbourne', but then I felt bad cos all I usually do on my days off is drink.

melbourne = drinking.

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

Melbourne isnt a big tourist, see the big things in three days, bang hard and go home. It's a lady that reveals her secrets gradually :D

kelele  said about 1 year ago:

He should like rooftop bar, theres drinking but shitty lines.

Sunnyboyz  said about 1 year ago:

melbourne = drinking.

that's what ended up happening. it was a good day.

fzchk  said about 1 year ago:

I'm glad it had a happy ending Sunnyboyz. I was enlisted by my German host mother to help two of her clients get to Philip Island. I told her I had no idea how to get there and she was surprised, but I found them a Grand Prix run shuttle bus (they were here for the vroom vroom) and I got myself a little wooden man that smokes incence cones out of it. Thats my contribution to Melbourne's state funded massive tourist event thing/s.
