I am listening to Leaves Me Blind and all the great memories of seeing them live over the years are flooding back. Suprised no one else has started a thread on this fine band, so now i have
awwww YES number none!!!
dream it down, for mine!
i'm bloody gonna stick it on my pod right now.
you've done well! rushall station's a great record also.
didn't Vincent Giarrusso do the mallboy film a few years ago? i thought that was pretty cool. has he done any others?
i don't think he's done any other films, but is playing in a new band... i think they were called "maps" for a while, but can't remember what they changed it to.
Anyone remember the McGuffins?
, Glenn Bennie has an ongoing solo project named GB3. Rubber Records released the first GB3 album Circlework in October 2003, which was accompanied by a couple of exclusive shows that brought together Underground Lovers members old and new (but not Giarrusso).
The second GB3 album Emptiness Is Our Business was issued to critical acclaim in August 2006, and featured collaborations with Sarah Blasko, Steve Kilbey, ex-Frente! vocalist Angie Hart, the late Grant McLennan, Sianna from Love Outside Andromeda, Stephen Cummings, and Adalita from Magic Dirt amongst others.
Giarrusso has since started developing a number of film and music projects with funding from private and government bodies. Godless, a feature film he will direct and score, is slated for production in early 2007. Melbourne indie label PopFrenzy will release the first of three albums for Giarrusso in late 2007 under the moniker Mist and Sea - predominantly a recording project in collaboration with Jason Sweeney and Cailan Burns. The first album Unless is slated for release late 2006/early 2007. Meanwhile, Giarrusso is also playing live music with a new band called Raining Ropes, featuring former members of Bergerac and The Paradise Motel. The current line up consists of Giarrusso, Jed Palmer, Emma Bortignon, Steve Griffiths and Mark Austin.
After officially leaving Underground Lovers in 1996, Phillipa Nihill recorded two solo releases - the Dead Sad EP in November 1996, and a full length album A Little Easy in 2000. Aside from her guest appearences with GB3, she has recently returned to the Melbourne music scene as part of Saoi, an Irish Gaelic-influenced ambient duo completed by vocalist Paula Kehoe. Their debut CD This Drowning Is Dreaming was released independently in December 2006.
if someone could come over and reorder my cds in to some semblance of order, that'd be good, thanks, ta. in return i'll play leaves me blind over and over again like i used to
i really love that album, reminds me of something
Weren't the McGuffins Phillipa along with Billy Baxter? I had a taping of "lets get rich together" but it was lost to me years ago.
Your Eyes, just came on, time to really crank the stereo
I think I've got their first release
It was a CD EP, hand-painted cover, given away at a Tote gig in 1988 or 1989
I think Rowan was the singer/songwriter of The McGuffins.
Phillipa went on to join UL, which was why I went to see them
every single time someone starts an underground lovers thread you babble on about the fucking mcguffins, HEB
Your pics still off Rach?

this is better
mmm underground lovers... i've been trying to track down early records, pre Leaves Me Blind.
mmmm didn't UL open for the cure when i was a tot?
you're looking for the self-titled, calico.
Losing It is always on my oz mix tapes
i absolutely love underground lovers. the undies - in addition to being one of the nicest bunches of people working in music - were directly responsible for my band getting signed. as in, we supported them a few times, they and their tour manager went back to rubber saying good things about us, and those good folk offered us a deal.
which we promptly ballsed up, post haste. ah, happy days...
actually, when i first visited melbourne years ago, one of the first 'touristy' things i did was visit rushall station.
yes, so where do i find it.
Nope.
hmmm.....
rushall station is rad.
that chunk that littlerach pasted is a bit wrong though. popfrenzy are sydney based (unless there are TWO!). interesting to hear of this collab between giarusso and prettyboycrossover. didn't know popfrenzy were releasing locals though.

does he still have a bowl haircut? ((c) Dollop)
I've never loved Losin' It either, and it did seem fairly lacklustre last night. I just let it drift on by...
I think Vince was just mucking around with some fans up the front who kept requesting Losin' It, even after it had just been played. The drum machine beat was supposed to be the intro to Star Signs, and Vince ad-libbed Losin' It over the top. Fun for him, I guess!
Haha. No. But he is still a dapper dresser.
soooo...any Sydney fans going tonight? Can anyone confirm if it's 9.30 start time again..?
The gig started out pretty rough, both in playing and in sound (Dream it Down was particularly loose), but towards the end of the set things improved.
Wasn't entirely sure if all of Emma Bortignon's contributions were entirely necessary, but some were really great.
Would have liked more representation from Rushall in the set, and I was a bit disappointed at the omission of Beautiful World. But Las Vegas was outstanding.
Solid show, but not a patch on the East Brunswick Club show in early 2010.
Yea Las Vegas ruled. Huge crowd too which would've made them happy. It'd be good if next time they line up a series of shows or residency at a slightly smaller venue and focuss on a different era each week. I've always wanted to hear them play the track Rushall Station live. One day....
*focus
i thought last night was incredible. one of the best shows i've seen in ages.
from where I was standing the sound was great. glenn has incredible tone.
why don't they play anything off Rushall? 'On And On And On And On' or 'In My Head' would've capped off the night.
I've had ''In My Head'' in my head ever since I read that Icons piece. Tune.
Wish I could have made it.
Yeah I'm going along, it's a 9.45pm start for the Undies apparently. Underlights are supporting first, they're onstage at 8.30pm-ish.
Glad to hear that most of you in Melbs enjoyed it. I'll be pissed if they don't play anything off Rushall! Either the two songs Jose mentioned, or 'Takes You Back', or the title track or... (ends up listing the whole album)
They played 'Takes You Back' last night, and it sounded ace.
I had an awesome time. I was up the front taking photos and what happened during ''Losin' It'' was a drunk dude came up next to me and was telling Vince that he could sing and he could get up on stage and sing it with him and he was drunkeningly singing the words, hence the additional bit at the end.
I've not processed all my pics (it's too much of a brilliantly windy, sunny day not to get all my laundry done and dried, particularly my doona, to sit on my pooter and edit), but if you want to see a few sneak peaks go to the Rubber Records FB page. I uploaded them there (and then stupidly realised I should've put them on the UL page) https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150450437494002&set=a.10150127357354002.314428.614249001&type=1&ref=notif¬if_t=photo_reply&theater#!/RubberRecords
Great on Friday at the Factory but Vince seemed out of it! A couple of pills popped for old time's sake perhaps? And the set still needed more Rushall.
Most enjoyable on friday.
Does anyone know the name of the first song they played?
If the setlist was the same as the Melb show, it would have been ''Mumblehead Again'' - a B-side from ''Las Vegas'' (I think?) that's on the second disc of the new retrospective.
Great song :)
Has the two-disc version been seen out and about? I can only find a pre-order on the Rubber site.
I got mine from JB in Geelong a couple of weeks ago.
Cheers for that, sounds about right on iTunes.
Also, excellent name friend.
Found it elsewhere online. Convenience plus!
playing at Pure Pop Records, St.Kilda on Sun 18th Dec!!!
