I'd never heard of this man prior to meeting my GF, but have since become a fan of his work.
I watched a doco on youtube last night, that was in 6 parts, and it's great!
Gives you a lot to think about in relation to his films and life story.
The one thing I found interesting was the thought of him filming some of the shots, like those famous shots refered to as 'Worms POV' wherein he'd lay under the girls looking up to get a shot of them towering over a man, boobs'a shake'n like crazy. Can you imagine filming that?
Anywho, Wasn't a 'love of russ' thread so I started one.
My fav out of the handfull i've seen is
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Kelly is hot, did you know she was discovered by Russ whilst working as a Playmate?

i have always wanted to cover one of the songs from beyond the valley of the dolls.
russ is the king.
how many of his leading ladies did he end up marrying?
i love russ meyers movies. he's often labelled the king of sexploitation but unlike a lot of sexploitation films his women are strong and empowered and just downright sassy.
In the doco, the leading lady from Faster Pussycat Kill Kill, speaks about her time spent with russ. She looks exactly the same, but about 15KG more.
Meyer is way more than a boob man. How great is the melodramatic dialogue and the costumes and sets? Very great, that's how.

Also, his work is severely underrated as a cinematographer. His style, uncanny angles and dominant women were all quite unique and predated later cinematic styles.

Russ married Eve Meyer... they were married before he made a full length film though... and she only starred in 'Eve and the Handyman'
and Edy Williams, who was in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and was slated to be the lead in several films which Meyer ended up abandoning (Jaws of Vixen, VIva Foxy!) before their nasty divorce.
He never married again, although he did spend 8 years or so with Kitten Natividad (Up!/Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens).
Kitten is nice! We exchange emails on her birthday :)
Its funny how nobody ever really mentions how violent some of his movies are. I love Faster Pussycat, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and Vixen but Super Vixens and Up! just took the sexualised violence maybe a pubic hair too far for my tastes.
Anyone else find this?
the ramping up of the violence is on a parallel with the public's tastes in drive-in cinema at the time-
the scenes you're talking about are a lot more shocking now than they were then, although Meyer attempts to give it all a cartoonish edge.

one for the nerds... Russ's Arrowhead drive, Hollywood hills home... I have reason to believe it's the A-frame with the cream/orangey roof to the left of the arrow. This is where he shot pretty much all the interiors from Ultravixens...

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is pretty much my favourite film ever. In recent years I've discovered that it's lots of people's favourite film. A friend and I had a ritual of getting drunk while watching it before we went out of a Saturday night.
Only other ones I've seen are Faster Pussycat and Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens. As someone upthread said, the latter is truly mental.
