I did a search and am surprised there is no thread belonging to this awesome band.
I was in Sydney last night, after a road trip up with the LAURA guys to play their show at Spectrum - which I really couldn't miss, being such a killer bill with The Instant and Pivot.
I hadn't seen Pivot live before, before this show. I had thought (correctly I found out later) Pivot to be a 4/5 piece band. What I was faced with last night at Spectrum was a 2 piece (feed), just Rich and Laurence Pike on drums and guitar/bass, along with the old Juno's set up either side of the stage and some samples/backing tracks running. And practically a whole new set of songs that leave the slower more jazzy/tortoise sounding tunes behind, and rock the fuck out not disimilar to Trans Am (futureworld era) with KILLER drumming that blew my mind, and great onstage energy..
What a rad band. I have much love for them. And great dudes too.
M&N people, talk about how good Pivot are... now:

I love these guys..Laurence is a fantastic muso..with his Triosk and Laurenz Pike experience.
excellent work for starting this thread.
Pivot are great but Triosk are one of my favourite Sydney bands. Their last couple of records have been absolutely beautiful - their signing to Leaf in the UK is a pretty solid stamp of approval.
If you like Pike's drumming, you should check out his solo 10" release from last year - I'll dig up the details/links.
yes... triosk rule. pivot seem like the sort of "play in a rock band for fun" equivalent (for a bunch of conservatorium jazz nuts).
i'm curious about this new, reduced pivot line-up though... any more info, anyone?
pike's solo 10" is on monika enterprise... i think their website is here. release is called drums for fun and fitness.
Agreed, Triosk are fantastic.. unfortunately the one show I caught of theirs down here a few years back left quite a bit to be desired, but album wise its all grand. Pivot though I haven't heard of, time to investigate!
pivot have rocked my world for a good couple of years -- I think I once actually cited them as one of my top five australian bands -- they totally rule
great band
t'was a good show
agreed marcusb.. at this stage, when there are only a handful of australian bands I'm really digging, with this one show they're probably now in my top 5... the last album is damn fine too. Hopefully The Black Hundred get to play a show with these guys in Newcastle next month. Can't wait.
that release, drums for fun and fitness is a wank, but its absolutely AMAZING. no-one else on this planet does, or can drum like that.
also, Pivot and Triosk are brilliant. Triosk certainly do bring much more to the table though.
kirsten dunst is a good song
tis a good title for a song also!
i had it on my myspace page and people thought Kirsten Dunst was the artist
I saw them on last friday night as well, I think both of us had the same strange girl trying to get us to dance.
I will say I'm far from sold on pivot. there seemed to be something missing from their sound. The friends I was mainly with thought that the samples they used pulled attention away from what the brothers were doing. Maybe that was what bothered me as well.
That said I would see them again and I definatly want to check out triosk, maybe they are moree what I'm after
I know you like loud rockin' stuff McGauz but Adrian Klumpes (Pivot/Triosk) released a solo record called Be Still late last year on Leaf. Atmospheric, processed piano stuff. beautiful record and well worth checking out too if you're in the mood for something quieter.
be still
nice artwork too...
keep an eye out for a Sydney launch in the coming months.
I like some mellower stuff too runout :) I'll definitely check it out! I've been searching for some Triosk music since I've got back to Melbourne, but no luck yet. Though I did resist looking at cds whilst in polyester yesterday, because I'd spent a stupid amount of money already and only needed my mountain goats ticket
hmm number one.. indeed, that would have been me. She was nice enough, cute, friendly.. I think just rather drunk.. or something, as I noticed her efforts to get no less than 7 people to dance with her. Are you "Mr Rebec" number one? Because if you're who I thought you were I thought you looked kind of familiar.. not that we've ever met.
McGauz, I believe we kinda met but not as well. Were you still in Syd on NYE?
Yeah that was me McGauz. I didn't realise at the time because you have a vertiable twin in Sydney who I drunkenly introduced myself to once only to be asked "who the fuck is mcGauz?"
haha who is he indeed!
did we meet Empra? even sort of? sometimes I'm completely oblivious to stuff.. sadly I didn't stay in sydney for NYE.. I just came up for the night, and flew home on the sat morning, as I had tix to M Ward back in melb.
Be Still is brilliant, genius. keep your eyes open for an interview i did with Klumpes, which has taken me months to write up because i'm really fucking lazy and i didn't have deadline.
post a link or details here when the interview is done thanks whale.

From their mailing list, today:
NEW RECORD IN JUNE
Happy to announce that our new record will be mastered in the next few days in Sydney, and should be arriving wherever you are by late June 2010. We’ll let you know about the title soon enough.
You may have heard a teaser from it called “The Quick Mile’ floating around on the Warp 2010 compilation, but if not, head to our myspace and have a listen: http://www.myspace.com/pivotpivot
i listened to the myspace link. i was disappointing. at the same time, it made me think i didn't give their second lp the attention it deserved too. i'll have to dig it up, er, in i-tunes.
i have such mixed feelings about pivot. maybe i'll pretend make me love you pivot is a separate band since they are, in effect
They totally are.
I quite liked their remix of The Temper Trap when I heard it on the radio, but listening again it suffers from the same dumbing-down that they've gone through since... you know.
Ha, I have said ''dumbing down'' a lot in this thread.
Sorry.
True but.
They've just locked in a show at the Annandale and East Brunswick. Tickets onsale on Mess and Noise
Really not enjoying their new stuff much at all.
part of me likes this track
which part?
below the waist
WTF!!?!!?!?
Pivot have changed their name to PVT
Wow… did someone delete the Pivot name change story?
Nope… still there. M&N's just broked.
PVT? eh?
