Dexter

tabula rasa  said about 5 years ago  or at  5:01PM on Saturday, December 30 2006 in television

Are any of you guys watching Dexter? It's quite entertaining, in a strange sort of way.

Dexter Morgan

Quick summary: based on the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter it stars Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) as a forensic pathologist working for the police and specialising in blood. Dexter, appearing normal to everyone else, is actually a sociopath who deals with those who've escaped justice in his own special way.

The first episode starts off ok, but the series just gets better from there. Heaps of black humour and wry commentary. It's a good psychological drama with a major story arc running through it.

From Episode 2 they use a great title sequence that shows Dexter making breakfast & getting ready in the morning. For something with no actual violence, it has some of the most violent imagery I've seen. Suits the show perfectly. Youtube video here (but it loses something at the normal youtube screen size).

what is "black humour" exactly?

tabula rasa  said about 5 years ago:

& here's the picture missing from above:

tabula rasa  said about 5 years ago:

I'd say it's humour that makes light of death and other serious matters, with the humour made by the person affected. It's a dry, dark humour.

ah, I thought this was about this guy

or this guy

tabula rasa  said about 5 years ago:

lol !

It could've been Dexter (ex) from The Avalanches.

Dexter the robot as a serial killer. Now I'd watch that show!

Yeah, watched the whole series, and thought it was brilliant...good to see a few regulars from Oz in it too. They're going to shoot another series based on the second book too, and I think that a third book is scheduled for release next year.

tabula rasa  said about 5 years ago:

Good to hear re second series. I think I might pick up the books as I did enjoy the first series.

Lane  said about 5 years ago:

this is really, really good.

bees're bees  said about 5 years ago:

So..... how do you watch it?

Lane  said about 5 years ago:

your friend you dated briefly in high school tracks you down on the internet after ten years of not seeing you, then they download it off the internet and burn it to a cd and post it to you just for the hell of it, because they are nice

bees're bees  said about 5 years ago:

Cuuuuute!!!

Lane  said about 5 years ago:

the sound design in dexter is great. most of the normal every day sound effects (voices excluded) are unusually low in volume. just background texture. enhances his distance from the every day world. but in the memories and the killing; the things which shape his life, things are nice and defined, sharp, crystal clear, heightened in the way the moments in our life that shape us linger.

Bumping this thread for people who need some good winter torrents to warm their hearts. Dexter is brilliant.

ProDelgado  said about 4 years ago:

Read both books, and I think that the third one is actually out now, or due out now...fuck Harry Potter...

tabula rasa  said about 4 years ago:

The first book is floating around at Borders & the like as a $10 promotional edition to get people into the series (or it was 2 months ago).

ProDelgado  said about 4 years ago:

Yup, they did something similar here in the UK, think it was £3.99 and had a sticker that said you could return it and get your money back if you didn't enjoy it...

tabula rasa  said about 4 years ago:

Episodes 1 & 2 of Dexter Season 2 are available for torrenting over on eztvefnet.org.

zadie  said about 4 years ago:

ORSUM

I'm surprised how few people are hearting dexter the crushable murderer.

tinyman  said about 6 months ago:

tinyman  said about 5 months ago:

Ha! C'mon, that was a fun episode (ending) this week. I give them a handclap for that. :-P

rigid  said about 5 months ago:

Is he still endlessly carping on to himself about Harry's code? I'd had enough of the ponderous narration by the end of the second season. Haven't watched anything since. Should I? Help me M+N. You're my only hope.

klaximopark  said about 5 months ago:

Rarely have I seen such a blatant 'dont choo go down there!' moment...but yeah, high concept dexter at its best.

And rigid, if you've got some kind of problem with a dude constantly muttering to a projection of his dead dad, and other deadsies along the way, I guess further seasons won't be ideal. But the later seasons are killer! Mwah ha ha har!

klaximopark  said about 5 months ago:

shits gettin kerrrraaayzzzzeh!

tinyman  said about 5 months ago:

Hehe. Yeah. Fun build up to an end that's just rushing up to us. Gee that was quick.

tinyman  said about 5 months ago:

I admit, there's been some clunky, bumpy seasons, and this is maybe one of them. But that season ending promises some fun things down the line, dunnit? I was smiling.

LaxCharisma  said about 5 months ago:

Yeah...it's kinda become...I dunno I still enjoy watching it but it's a bit...it's certainly not as exciting to me as Boardwalk Empire or Breaking Bad is...still left it wide open for an interesting next season.

whatwhat  said about 5 months ago:

Has his step sister worked out he's a murderer yet?

Or are they now coupled up together?

I gave up on this show part way they the series with John Lithgow, where any rime it wasn't him or Dexter it was absolute garbage.

tinyman  said about 5 months ago:

where any time it wasn't him or Dexter it was absolute garbage.

That's still generally the case, but we put up with it cos it's still worth it.
