The quit smoking thread

le_disco  said about 5 years ago  or at  1:59PM on Saturday, July 1 2006 in chat

So the third step in moving towards a total smoking ban in enclosed public places comes into effect tomorrow, with smoking in NSW restricted to no more than one quarter of a pubs total floor space.

one year from tomorrow, on 1st of july 2007, smoking will be banned from any enclosed public place in new south wales.

i think it might be time to start quitting, otherwise its going to be much too hard next year when the big hit comes.

who else is in the same boat?

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

QLD had next year's thing in NSW happen overnight - no more smoking in enclosed areas, but there's a 3 month grace period to allow places to get their shit together.

TheCowWhisperer  said about 5 years ago:

I AM TRYING TO GIVE UP AS WE SPEAK.

It is very, very difficult and I completely fucking suck at it*.

*Both the act of quitting and the left over cigarette butts floating around my rancid ashtray.

tilljames  said about 5 years ago:

i've given up alcohol and cigarettes for 5 weeks.
not drinking definitely makes it easier to quit the smokes...
i am very shitty now though, not even a week into it.
i'm frothin'...

NakedApe  said about 5 years ago:

When does WA laws kick in?

It's gotta help me give up the nails, I am well fucking over them

knomadix  said about 5 years ago:

no ciggies for close to 3 1/2 months now I think.

I don't miss it. I seem to sink a lot more piss tho.

glasshutch  said about 5 years ago:

What are the WA laws now? Are you still allowed to light up anywhere inside, or is it like here where there's only parts of the venue you can suck down in?

NakedApe  said about 5 years ago:

shortly will be no smoking inside at venues at all.
thought it was coming in today but might be at the end of the month

glasshutch  said about 5 years ago:

The kids can pretend they're like, in New York, or like, something. They'll love it.

darlingnikki  said about 5 years ago:

bring on the laws! i gave up smoking for a reason.

gobetween  said about 5 years ago:

everyones quiting smoking, it's great.
These are the things that helped me quit

  • House rules...no smoking in the house.
  • Avoid all places where smoking is permitted
  • Drink lots of water and go to the gym,
being health concious makes you less
    inclined to smoke.

  • Go for a long walk in parks to take your mind of it

  • Drink your tea or coffee in a different way...eg..if you take your tea with milk, don't have the milk, or have no sugar...that way your brain won't make the association between coffee or tea and cigarettes.

  • Only drink alcoholic beverages for taste and cut down...eg...only ddrink cocktails...restriuct yourself to a pricier beverage and then drink fruit juices.

gobetween  said about 5 years ago:

Also if you miss the bite of alcohol, sparkling mineral water straight or with lime will help.

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

I look forward to standing outside and blowing smoke in the face of passing children.

empra  said about 5 years ago:

i haven't had a cigarette since sunday afternoon, just because my chest is currently fucked... but i really feel like one now, but i know it's going to hurt and i know i shouldn't have one.

Trock  said about 5 years ago:

3.5 weeks for me!

freaksandgeeks  said about 5 years ago:

great advice gobetween. I don't smoke unless I drink, so I find your tip very helpful.

TransientRandom  said about 5 years ago:

le disco, just buy rollies. this will help you to quit.

voidster  said about 5 years ago:

i was a heavy smoker (40 a day) for the last 20 - 25 years....i quit 7 weeks ago and this time i really wanted to do it so i have found it quite easy

however a friend told me to go and buy allen carr's book (everyone seems to speak very highly of this tome) because she says at the moment i am relying on will power alone and that could trip me up in the long term

one of the reasons i gave up was to try and quit pot - i've always spun it..haven't had weed for 3 weeks now

i have spent time in pubs getting drunk and have come close to caving in but have managed to resist thus far

VoxFuzz  said about 5 years ago:

Voidy, how did you survive in London?! I was shocked by the smoke over there. I think I got passively addicted. People still smoke at dinner tables in restaurants! I felt like such a sooky granny.

LoadMyRig  said about 5 years ago:

re london: and then you blow yr nose and all this black shit comes out.

voidster  said about 5 years ago:

voxy, my brother was my minder would threaten me with violence if i looked like going for a gasper...i had more of a problem with all the chavs snorting lines off the bar - fucking twats

Got shitfaced on the weekend and didn't even come close to smoking. Don't know why but it seems to have just clicked this time. Anyway I'm on 9 days so far here's hoping...

mickeyjuice  said about 1 year ago:

fuck! the temptation is shit house. Any one know of some other good remedies, (natural)? excluding 'willpower'.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

fuck ''natural'', use nicotine gums and lozenges. they'll at least work, and the temptations will decrease over time.

they are also a shitload better for you than resorting to smoking again.

mickeyjuice  said about 1 year ago:

Champix, Varenicline tartrate. Supposedly it works by blocking the effects of nicotine in your body. Any one gone to this extent? If so did it work? I think gum will be my next preference.

5 days so far. Cravings aren't so bad but I'm ridiculously antsy.

hungryhungryhippo  said about 9 months ago:

Yes the antsyness. Mr hhh is quitting right now and thinks he can just wear patches on and off when he needs to. Unfortunely when he doesn't wear them he behaves like a psycho and thinks I am being grossly unfair suggesting he needs to wear at all times. Advice? :(

hungryhungryhippo  said about 9 months ago:

Homicide is tempting but won't address the issue. Is there a partners refuge?

charlesincharge  said about 9 months ago:

personally I would suggest that patches are a waste of money, except for having cool dreams.

cold turkey is the best - just don't smoke. don't talk about it/tell everyone you're quitting.

*you also have to stop associating with other smokers. * sad, but true.

autumnleaves  said about 5 months ago:

I've never been a huge smoker, but I am a fairly regular smoker. 1-5 a day on average, usually 2 or so. Not much, but still supposedly triples your risk of lung cancer. Fuck that shit. So... fuck, I'm struggling to avoid them when all my friends smoke, my housemate smokes, and I smoke weed a reasonable amount too which I am basically forced to mix with tobacco so I don't knock myself out.

I've just ordered some e-cigs with differing amounts of nicotine, so I can cut back on the nicotine and still satisfy the social urge to smoke with people. What say you guys on e-cigs?

Tijuana Texico  said about 5 months ago:

1-5? And you're not a huge smoker? I consider myself a smoker and when I was smoking I'd have 3 or 4. And that was taking it's toll on me. 5 is alot in a day when you think about it.

I can do without them now. Even when drinking. The one I miss the most is before bed. That shit is awesome. No idea why. I even wrote a song about it and how great it is

autumnleaves  said about 5 months ago:

According to my research, 1-5 is considered a ''light smoker''. Yes, it's still bad for you, thus my post in this thread. There's a difference between having a few wines after work each day and getting paralytic all day every day, so, yeah, I'm a smoker, but not a heavy smoker.

It's rare I have five, usually if I'm drinking or something. Usually 2 or so.

Tijuana Texico  said about 5 months ago:

fuck, i'm a light smoker then. fuck this, I'm going to buy a deck

autumnleaves  said about 5 months ago:

Haha.. it's still bad for you though, tripling your risk of lung cancer is srs bzns. Thus why I wanna go to 0.

Timey  said about 5 months ago:

i've gone from a pack a day to zero in the last week and it's been so easy, it's ridiculous. no withdrawls, no symptoms, nothing. the biggest factor in this is that my housemate (who is also a smoker) has been away all week, so no ciggies left on the kitchen table to temp me. however, i fear that as soon as i go out for a social drink i'll light up again.
