earth hour

aquatic  said about 5 years ago  or at  11:13AM on Friday, December 15 2006 in events

For one hour next March, Sydney will plunge itself into darkness in a bid to save power and reduce greenhouse gas pollution.

In a world first, the city will turn off its lights between 7.30-8.30pm on Saturday, March 31, in a campaign called Earth Hour.

The campaign encourages businesses, communities and individuals to cut their emissions by 5 per cent in 2007.

aquatic  said about 5 years ago:

i was really looking forward to this but alas i'll be at vfestival..

anyone got any thoughts on this? might be a fizzier

redlips  said about 5 years ago:

yeah - my first thought on this when it was announced was...

"oh, the night of v fest - I wonder whether the v fest lights are gonna be considered as essential lighting that has to stay on for the hour"

I'm also quite cynical about the whole thing - they say that the city is behind it but I bet that lighting that lights street advertising is stil gonna be on.

number none  said about 5 years ago:

Its a great idea. more symbolic than anything else. Mind you if they turned the power off while the Bumblebeez play the V festival, it could be a good thing

Hazard_Man  said about 5 years ago:

urchinmink  said about 1 year ago:

URGH.

I am irate.

My housemate just came into my room and asked me to turn my candle on and my light off for Earth Hour.

Seriously?

a) I am already aware the Earth is in trouble and turning off my light for an hour is not making a scrap of difference to my feelings on the issue. Nor do I believe it will make a scrap of difference to the actual issue.
b) I doubt my light is using up anywhere near the energy of the big TV and dvd set up she is presently watching (in the dark).

Anyway I kowtow'd to her request but have now snuck my light back on.

So there.

tinyman  said about 1 year ago:

They don't believe in global warming and want to generate more carbon dioxide by burning candles.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

Maybe point out that earth hour coincides with the F1 grand prix so turning your light off isn't gonna do shit

urchinmink  said about 1 year ago:

Thanks :)

garumph  said about 1 year ago:

Good excuse for a candlelit dinner.

tinyman  said about 1 year ago:
