Saw him when he came out to do his speaking tour in March of 1996. He spoke for well over 3 hours not a second of it was boring. went through all his ideas, motivations and inspirations. He talked in great depth about his role in the Sex Pistols saying they were only really meant to sell tshirts for his shop.

Beest part of the night was a idea for a movie he had pitcheed in the late 80s about Oscar Wilde discovering an early form of rock and roll on his visit to America

He is actually a bit of a hero of mine. Yes he's a cunt but a lot of what he has done inspiring for me

MALCOLM MCLAREN: THE GAME

Tuesday 18 March

2233-2330

Set in Parispace - Paris past, present and future - Malcolm McLaren: The Game sees our hero and the Game's namesake, set out in search of his true self, his individual identity, his free spirit, lost in the day to day grind of nine to five and his endless search for fame and fortune.

''Am I doomed to this grey, predictable life of work, work, work and what for - money…to pay the bills, to buy a car, the latest gadget a designer suit, a new kitchen…''

Living as he does, inside a dustbin, McLaren hears the voice of the Game challenging him… Does he really want to find his outlaw spirit?

''Yes, yes, get me out of here.''

And The Game begins...

With help and advice from fictional and historical figures, characters who have peopled McLaren's imagination over the years, he plays the Game, making his way through the different levels. Among his aides are Nadja, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Sartre, Claude Debussy, Edith Piaf, the Phantom of the Opera… he visits cyberspace, controlled by a teenager in a bedsit in the suburbs, conducts the orchestra at the old opera house, the Palais Garnier and even rides the rodeo with Buffalo Bill and his Wild West show at the Great Exhibition of 1889.

He enters each new level of the Game, following the cryptic advice of the various characters, hounded by his adversary, Boredom.

Eventually, McLaren enters the real world with recollections of working with Catherine Deneuve on his Paris album, along with the Sex Pistols concert in Paris in 1976, the heady days of freedom, before the group signed to a record company….

Malcolm McLaren: The Game is an epic adventure with a wall to wall soundtrack… this is radio in three dimensions.

I still like it.

Released in 1989, so not a lot of the '80s for it to be a fave in ;) But still, yeah.
What format would you like?!

goodbye to the ultimate wise-guy/pimp/zeitgeist man of 70s-80s pop. I really like Waltz Darling - and he got on to the Vogue phenomenon before Madonna!

That more recent album that he did on Paris though was an absolute abomination. I had to put it out on the street it made me so angry!

Surely to the majority of people ''The guy who started the Sex Pistols'' is the only thing they could say on the news that would mean anything. Not surprising the mainstream media haven't launched into a lengthy emotional analysis of a guy many are probably only vaguely aware of

True, but it's a big thing and it means a lot.

That's right that's why I was surprised they kept mentioning the New York Dolls, though not so much his involvement with them as his experience of them. Who amongst Radio National listeners would have the slightest idea of the NYDs?

They were going for the obscure rock cred angle on the story, I think.

Does McLaren get the blame for inspiring Big Audio Dynamite?

Negative.

sister  said about 2 years ago:

I'm a Radio National listener. I know who the New York Dolls are.

But if you were referring to Fran Kelly's introduction to the piece on the breakfast show, well, I think that was Fran showing off her own music cred.

She was the c.1980 university bands booker par excellence and member of Toxic Shock (I think it was Toxic Shock).

OK, so this mix is all over the interwebs like a mad woman’s lunch, but it deserves to be posted here.

Creative vision, singular obsession and an ear for a great tune. Malcolm McLaren had all these in spades. Sure, the guy could be a giant douchebag, but at least he was aware of that and used it to his advantage, thus ensuring him a place in pop history. Oh yeah, mixed by Primo!
