I will be doing so this weekend. Can any one advise me of any good deals around at the moment?
I don't want to play games or watch movies or anything like that. This will be for internet, TAFE shit and photos and shit.
Whatcha got?

Get a dell!
I have one that does internet and typing. You should get that one. Oh, and MS Paint.
MS Paint is the shit. You can draw dicks on anything.
Or you can just draw dicks. Like on a blank page
toadphoney, you are AMAZING!!!
BTW, JB HIFI!!!!
Or make friends with someone who works at said JB HiFI and get them to purchase it for you so you can get the sweeeeeet staff discount...
Fuck JB Hi-Fi. Although they have been the most flexible on price so far
Get a Mac, don't look back.
Heck, for that list of uses I'd suggest you get an iPad. Why cart a laptop around?
... you're Tex, aren't you.
For fuck's sake, flukazoid. Live and let live. I like you. I like you alot. But please. Electric Flu is over. I'm just here to have a good time.
No thanks. I don't really dig them.
I won't be carting it around. It's just for home. But we don't have a desk or anything, so laptop rules
Tell me of good deals

pm switchbladesisters
Get a Mac and install Windows on it then. They are the best laptops by a country mile.
For those purposes, it's not worth coughing up for a Mac. If it's always going to be at home and near a power source, just buy the cheapest finest laptop you can find. Ok, maybe not cheapest, but still cheap. One of those $400 13-inch ones will probably do you fine. It'll have the battery life of a car running on a single AAA, but it'll easily suit your purposes at minimal cost.
Ok, I'm exaggerating just a bit about the battery. On an el cheapo lappy that's not a netbook, you'll probs get a couple hours of juice per charge.

oh yeah, you're banned.
Lapy King were good to me when I lived in Sydney. I don't think they have physical stores now, just the online one: http://lapyking.rtrk.com.au/?scid=1844&kw=4723430&pub_cr_id=6512243336
I recently bought a Dell from JBHifi and got a pretty good deal. You can also buy them directly from their website and there's always specials on and they give out discounts for RACV/union members and stuff.
Also, don't forget that if it's for work you can salary sacrifice it. That means no GST payable and you'll get a discount equivalent to whatever your marginal tax rate is (30-40%).
doesn't that depend on your work though, clare?
I'm not really sure. I suspect that even if your payroll department doesn't offer it, you can still do it yourself through the tax office when you lodge your tax return. But I don't know that for sure. Presumably as far as the ATO are concerned it's available to everyone , it's just that some employers might not be bothered doing the paper work themselves.
Actually, maybe your employer does have to be involved.
Don't stuff around... get a MacBook Air.
It suits your needs perfectly. I have one and I recommend it... best laptop I've ever owned and I got a MacBook Pro as well!
Buy it from JB Hi-Fi, Myer or at Apple Stores online or in person - it doesn't matter where you buy it as the price is the same everywhere.
JUST DO IT ALREADY!!
....and please, don't even think about buying a Dell.
More info on the MacBook Air
I've been thinking about buying a mac. I have a netbook (with a cracked screen...debating whether or not to get this fixed) and a desktop that works just fine, but is (obviously) unwieldy and not great in terms of my current needs.
also lozenge, i'd totally consider a macbook air except for the lack of dvd drive.
I'm sure Macbooks are great but they're also about two or three times the price. My old Dell lasted about four years before it died. A friend of mine has a mac and she seems to be always taking it to someone to get it fixed.
I highly recommend them. It's not a fanboy thing - they're just great computers.
Mac's don't die.
That's unusual with you friend's Mac - I've got 3 and the oldest is 8 years. None of them have ever had a problem.
Actually macs aren't quite that bad anymore. The price difference used to be astronomical, but they've come down a lot.
Considering the amazing build quality of what you get, it's a no brainer for me. My computers get a hard life, but the macs come out after a few years of good use looking just as sexy as ever. PCs seem to just end up tatty and scratched and the number of components I've had die... yeah, I'm enjoying the switch.
Not to mention doing music work is night vs day on Windows vs Mac. Macs support so much incredible stuff right out of the box - advanced MIDI, great audio drivers, awesome thread prioritisation. Much less stuffing around.
This is an outdated idea PC peeps still run with. The price of a Mac is comparable with a really good quality PC.
Those really cheap ass PC's in JB Hi-Fi are cheap for a reason - they're pieces of shit.
Mac's are totally worth the money.
and also no viruses
A 17 inch macbook pro with a 2.4ghz processor, 4gb of memory and 750gb storage is $2900.
The equivalent Dell with 8gb of memory instead of 4 but a 2.2ghz processor is $1259 at the moment.
So if you're just using it for basic internet/email/word processing/general work, then paying more than twice as much seems a bit excessive.
I'm posting this on a 10 year old acer travelmate 230. It's my internet slut. My mum owned it from new. It's in perfect nick. It has a 20 gig hard drive and 256 mb ram. It's probably worth 50 bucks.
BTW pollyphonic, macs certainly do get viruses.
....yeah people say that but in my 10 years of using macs I've never had one.... I haven't even installed any anti-virus software in that time either.
hmm
Was going to buy a mac while I was here in HK based pretty much on this (now debunked) 'myth alone...
11-inch MacBook Air is $1349
good deal
I think this is a development in the last year or so. Google ''viruses on macs'', ''trojans on macs'' etc.
Their hardware is very nice, if you can ignore their foxconn slavery issues. Yes, i know foxconn also make pc parts.
careful with the macbook air, occasionally you want things like useful usb slots and cd drives.
or even ethernet ports.
..yeah people say that but in my 10 years of using macs I've never had one....
In my 18 years of owning a PC I've never had a virus either - and I'm not particularly disciplined when it comes to installing/updating anti-virus software either.
Likewise.
