Destroyer

Surprised there isn't a thread about Destroyer. I got Destroyer's Rubies fairly early in 2006 and just realised that I've listened to it pretty steadily since. Awesome album. Where is the love?

best album of the year for me. but don't tell my friends.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

great album.

but yeah, bejar consistently gets shit for being the one of the new pornos with the shittiest solo career, but i think he's got the best one.

josejones  said about 5 years ago:

his new pornos songs are the best too -- jackie, jackie dressed in cobras, testament to a youth in verse, streets of fire.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

yep, pretty much.

and streethawk: a seduction, your blues and rubies are all classics.

josejones  said about 5 years ago:

I didn't rate Your Blues when it came out, but it's a BRAVE, dense and lyrically peerless album.
he opted for synths over a 'real' orchestra because of financial restrictions. and I reckon the album's better off for it -- proper orchestrations would've added pretense.

i don't think there's anyone on the planet doing what he's doing. he's miles ahead and it's gonna take a long time before people catch up.

shaun  said about 5 years ago:

serious question: what's wrong with pretense?

The only other Destroyer album I have is Thief, which pales in comparison to Rubies.

josejones  said about 5 years ago:

He's just testing the waters on Thief.

Ask Bono what's wrong with pretense.

Lorenzo St Dubois  said about 5 years ago:

Wow jose, it's like I can listen to this album just by reading this thread. I now know the artist personally. Have you ever thought about taking up a career in music writing?

josejones  said about 5 years ago:

you'd hate this album, rigid.

Lorenzo St Dubois  said about 5 years ago:

You and I might both be surprised, jose.

ShitBonanza  said about 5 years ago:

this night is fucking great also. i hate the new pornographers by the way, the're shit. but neko and destroyer i totally rate

dickqard  said about 5 years ago:

this is probably my favorite album this year, too.

mofire  said about 5 years ago:

great album.
should have been in my top 10.

vaquera  said about 5 years ago:

New Pornographers aren't for me either. Saw them at Meredith and found them uncaptivating.

I much prefer This Night to Your Blues. Or to whatever it is I'm listening to now. Destroyer's Rubies. Though I like this one better than Your Blues too.

I'm a little frustrated with how many words he tries to fit into a short amount of song. Fitting that many in means something somewhere has to be deformed to accomodate and... ugh. Lyrics to the detriment of.

It's just a pity it takes so much to get past the annoyingness of his voice.

best band ever

josejones  said about 4 years ago:

is the new album getting an Australian release?

aloha  said about 3 years ago:

i like this night.

tadatadatada  said about 3 years ago:

i think i like destroyer. i haven't made my mind up really.
it's a strange one

aloha  said about 3 years ago:

it's a bit like the handsome furs. i still prefer the the main project more.

josejones  said about 3 years ago:

what's not to like? guy's a genius.

tadatadatada  said about 3 years ago:

i only got two albums a couple of weeks ago. i'd been hooked on a couple of tracks i had floating around loose on my computer off streethawk, and never got around to hearing more.
then i downloaded one of his first cassette demo albums off a blog, i think the earlier stuff may appeal to me more, i'll have to keep digging and thinking

southernbelle  said about 3 years ago:

Huh. I never noticed this thread before. I am a huge fan. Destroyer stuff is WAY better than the New Pornographers. It is awful that Dan Bejar never tours with them. AWFUL.

He will never come to Australia :(

southernbelle  said about 3 years ago:

The early stuff can be hard to find. It tooks me many months and much persistence to complete my collection.

Streethawk is still the best, though.
