Flyleaf? Lame.

Mate, if you look up Ministry and see how Al Jourgensen has fucked that entire legacy, you'll rescind this comment.
It truly is fucked and depressing. Don't do drugs, kids!
I dunno. I liked the later albums...
Explain yourself, cracker
A follow up to this guy in the HUN
I take it this is the same guy who ended up on stage at Odd Future at BDO, yes?
Cool link Ralph.

Crikey. At Sydney Soundwave today Operation ELBA, a high-visibility police operation, will run at the music festival, targeting anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related crime, and illegal drug use and supply.
All well and good but they were also banning water bottles from the venue! Uh oh.
Alcohol related crime. How anyone could get pissed on the mid-strength booze on offer is beyond me...
Sisters Of Mercy. I still don't know what to make of what I just saw.
Brisbane show was 95% great. The other 5% was System Of A Down. Review for The Vine
I didn't watch System Of A Down....I've never been a fan. They were on same time as Devin Townsend & Sisters Of Mercy. Some of my friends were shocked I don't like that band.
I thought Marilyn Manson was pretty average...he use to put on quite spectacular shows. The band are only just OK these days. IF I'm not mistaken they were down a keyboardist too. They haven't replaced Madonna ''Wayne'' Gacy. Shame. He was good. I only saw 4 songs. I thought Dilinger Escape Plan sounded like a better deal.
There semed to be a lot of technical/power issues. Coal Chamber, Devin, Switchfoot... they're just the ones I saw.
But, a rundown of the day...
Coal Chamber, a highlight for nostalgia's sake, but I agree with an acquaintance, you'll never get to see them again. Not much longevity/magic left in the sound or stage presence.
Switchfoot, respect for pulling through half an hour's technical issues to throw themselves into the 5 or so songs they fit in. Always a great live band.
Times of Grace, basically me singing my lungs out for 25 mins. Album of the year for me last year. Super short set, but great stuff. Would be even better in an indoor venue.
Forever The Sickest Kids, a highlight for the cheese and just damn good times. Prob the happiest band I saw all day!
Dashboard Confessional in acoustic solo mode. Saw him at Splendour a while back, def appreciated it more this time. 'Hands Down' the obvious highlight, thanks to the version he did with Michael Stipe which caught my attention in the first place.
Devin Townsend, being his usual regal, tongue in cheese, tool of a man self. Maybe more so. Hilarious, though I still worry about this Ziltoid period... Can't imagine what the uninitiated would have thought.
Marilyn Manson. His time is very short methinks. Maybe (!) not in a dead pool kind of way. He's either going find rehab and God, or be the next Marlon Brando. A shadow of the 'monster under your bed' character he once portrayed. More now like that drunk unkle, cynical and starved of attention. Aging icons, in this case, don't have a lot of appeal.
Slipknot have still got it. One of the best stage shows of the day. Angry buggers.
System of a Down had the biggest crowd of the day.
Zakk Wylde had the biggest Marshall Stack, and longest guitar solo.
Taylor Momsen/The Pretty Reckless had the most equal male-to-female audience member ratio, for their own unique reasons.
A good day. Not the most amount of highlights I've had from a Soundwave, but some good memories regardless.
The Marshall Stack @ Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society
For my 2cents:
Gojira arrived just as they were finishing. Saw enough to indentify...yup....these guys play metal. Wouldn't have minded seeing more. They were pretty good I thought...
Meshuggah Was really looking forward to these guys. A mate hooked me up with their albums recently and I thought they sounded great. Delivered where Fear Factory or Tool never have for me...oh I did like Fear Factory for awhile but their formula runs thin fast...anyway...yeah Meshuggah sounded great. I found it disconcerting that they have no amplification on stage at all and everything runs through the PA. Awesome sound guy....I also found out I'm probably getting a bit past getting amongst it at the front of stage for brutal bands. That shit hurts a bit and I can't believe it possible for folks to stink that bad that early in the day...wow
The 2 seconds of Coal Chamber I heard made me laugh ''Pain train???...really??? likewise for Hell Yeah. Vinni Paul I know yer brother got shot and all but their is no reason to join such a shit band and stop playing at the top of your game. You ain't Lars Ulrich dude you were better than him...and I hate bands withsongs with their name in the title...except maybe Rammstein...
Mastodon I've heard a few albums....can't say I was totally grabbed by them but live...INCREDIBLE...I'll be checking them out more again now. Really impressed by this band.
Marilyn Manson I've seen this band be incredible...when they use to be a band ''Antichrist Superstar'' tour, BDO performance ''Golden Ag OF Grotesque'' tour all incredible....stripped of all theatrics and with a substandard band (Why is Twiggy now playing guitar and I assume that was Tim Skold on bass...who the fuck was playing drums and where the hell is the keyboards these days)...I watched 4-5 songs and it is about Manson's less than shocking rants ''I've been sober for 5 seconds''. Well done fuckwit...
Dilinger Escape Plan I was keen to get a good look at these guys. I've gotten more of their albums over the last year and find them quite incredible. I saw them side of stage at Soundwave 2009 and wished I was out front to see what they were doing properly....yeah these guys are explosive live....maybe a shit room for them to play in though. That tinshed had a pretty shit sound.
Slipknot finally got to see them! Yeah I like them a lot and they delivered. Played mostly everything I'd expect and put on a great performance. Awesome. Hope they sort out how to fill the Paul Gray gap and play more shows and albums...
Devin Townsend Project these guys were entertaining. The albums didn't quite grab me...the heavy aspect I liked often following that melodic path that reminded me that this guy once played with Steve Vai...I don't dig that sound much but live this guy is a complete lunatic and a deadringer for whatsihisface...the bad guy in Harry Potter...and it looked like half of Grinderman was playing in the band....the projected stuff...was...yeah equally as bizarre.
Sisters Of Mercy I didn't know what to expect....I was hoping it would be great...I don't think I could say it was great although I enjoyed seeing it. Not as embarrassing as the Christian Death gig I went to but what seemed to be some random roadie controlling Doktor Avalanche (3 laptop Macs) and two young cunt ring in guitarists and NO BASSPLAYER!!!...then there was Andrew ELDRITCH. I really wasn't expecting a shavenheaded guy in sunglasses with a black goattee wearing fluro yellow and orange for most of the set...although I got the joke and it was kind of funny (to me anyway)...he lost the fluro later stripping down to the expected black. Chainsmoked his way through the set and the stage setting looked great all the lights and smoke you'd expect from the band of old. Good mix of songs...few new numbers I didn't really know plus ''Alice'', ''Ribbons'', ''Vision Thing'', ''This Corrosion'', ''Lucretia''. ''More''.....I did like it but it was a bit halfarsed. Eldritch still has a great voice and I like his stage presence but bandwise not having a bassplayer was really lacking ESPECIALLY on shit like ''Lucretia''. I couldn't stand there being no bass on that song. I wasn't expecting Patricia Morrison but it really needs bass and not some programmed shit.
Anyway. I overall loved my Soundwave experience.
Shaun Prescott has an excellent review of the Sydney leg at The Vine
Interesting take on it. Good read.
''Still, there are a lot of loud guitar bands at Soundwave, and by the end, you just want to listen to Deep Forest.''
Ha! This is true.
Re: Meshuggah, I was pretty impressed. I'd seen them before, and was not in the mood for the 'heavy' vibe they have. Heavy as in 'we are Swedish, and live in cold damp dungeons' kinda heavy.
This time around, I found frontman Jens Kidman to be almost humorous. A dry sense of humor, at one stage drawling the words 'Heavy Metaaaalll' at the conclusion of a song, and trying to rouse a reaction from the crowd with 'Hiiiii. Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!'.
I agree, that room nor that stage was suited to Dillinger. The lead guitarist was almost exploding not being able to fly and jump on foldbacks from one side of the stage to the other.
I remember seeing them at the Gaelic about 5 or 6 years ago, and from first note, the lead guitarist had sprinted from the wings, and straight into the crowd. THIS was the standard that was set.
Good review Shaun. Loved the line about Teargas!
