You have got to be shitting me
I can think of a shitload of songs and bands I listened to repetitively over and over again which did the opposite and made me glad to be alive and fucking listening to this music. Some of the best memories I have involve listening to metal with mates and going to gigs. Corny as it sounds, I'm sure there's at least a few of us that can say the same.
Cannot wait to see the back of this white-bread young-conservative shit hole in a few weeks time.

I hate Melbourne generally. So I guess I agree with you.
Melbourne uni is a stinking shithole. I'd like my time and money back, please.
Fuck that.
I remember listening to Autopsy's Shitfun in 1997 and feeling sad... sad that it was possibly their last album and I'd never see them live.
I think if anyone's kid is listening to the same song over and over again, they've got problems in the first place, regardless of whether it's a metal song or 'Said I Loved You (but I lied...)'. Actually, the latter would probably be highly indicative of some serious fucking issues.
They've obviously not heard the song 'Gloomy Sunday'.
hahahahaha awesome.

So, stop whinging on m+n and do another ethnographic study (her's is based on 50 people with negative metal crap, surely you can preempt and do a focus group of more than 1000 peeps in melbs alone with positive metal exp).
wait wait so is this about metal or crossover thrash??
That thought actually did cross my mind. Sad thing is, I well and truly don't have the time for it at the moment, hence why you've not seen me around lately.
Once I finish my work in less than a month's time, it's fucking ON. And guess who I'll be asking for a hand...

Did she sing ' don't worry be happy'?
The quality of writing in that article is really low and most metal heads I know don't suffer from depression and listen to imported albums on repeat for weeks at a time. They are music mad, they are music fans, not head cases.

An early intervention model? WTF
Its a disgrace how much power the mental health profession have, especially since heavy metal is great at pacifying anger - have they done a study on that?
“Most young people listen to a range of music in positive ways; to block out crowds, to lift their mood or to give them energy when exercising, but young people at risk of depression are more likely to be listening to music, particularly heavy metal music, in a negative way.
“Examples of this are when someone listens to the same song or album of heavy metal music over and over again and doesn’t listen to anything else. They do this to isolate themselves or escape from reality.
“If this behavior continues over a period of time then it might indicate that this young person is suffering from depression or anxiety, and at worst, might suggest suicidal tendencies.”

Exactly!!
All I wanted was a Pepsi.
I wonder how much they got for that Pepsi sponsorship.
I don't think Pepsi would have found the reference flattering at the time. Corporate America took a while to catch up with postmodern irony. Now of course they deal in it exclusively.
this is the better version which probably pissed pepsico off more
Definitely the superior version.
lol
What a poor excuse for a study.. do they get paid for this shit? Teens are angsty regardless of what music they listen to. Try some Bieber fans next time.
Crap excuse for a study, agreed - the same study was done in 1982 and was inconclusive (though Tipper Gore and friends ran with it for a while), but it's got little to do with the University of Melbourne and more to do with the academics and the funding body. Plenty of great stuff comes out of UoM even if it's far from perfect. Makes me think I could transfer over to Music Therapy and blow a few minds though.
POTFD.
Good to see the neverending and still unresolved Media Effects Debate has left porn alone and gone back to heavy metal, where it fucking belongs.
Metal:
- teen suicide
- self harm, including cutting and solvent abuse
- killing cats
- high school massacres
- Satanism, including unproven accusations of pedophilia
Porn
- decrease in self-esteem in women
- higher increase in rape
- unproven accusations of pedophilia
Clearly metal wins the Media Effects Debate. Porn can get the fuck back in the theatre, we have pyres to build!
(Besides: does this guy look depressed to you?)
some guy got arrested by police here at melbourne uni just 10 minutes ago. lots of violent shouting, I think the guy got injured. Right downstairs from where I work... makes me wonder what would have happened if the guy had gone into my building rather than into the carpark...
Just scored Burzum/Aske, currently burning stuff and killing small things. That is all -carry on
Obviously this person isn't in the music dept has nothing to do with music has not followed the evolution of sound and is a fucking jerk writing self serving... shit.
Melbourne Uni students next door currently listening to Bon Jovi - Its My Life.
DIE FOR METAL
Kashmir!
Fuck those guys.
Canberra Uni is where the metal is at.
besides there's waaay better bon jovi to fuck with neighbours than that mid-ife crisis spash back
ummm splash back
yo
someone from the mental health council of Australia slaps this study about with a limp fish
i blame the melbourne uni for everything
world poverty included
it's a steaming pile of shit that place
um, i'm not sure where i got ''world'' from. ignore that statement.
Did anyone notice the URL?
http://newsroom.melbourne.edu/news/n-666
Ahahaha.
Also this is so ignorant it's retarded.
If our lord wasn't testing us, how would you account for the proliferation, these days, of this obscene heavy metal music, with its gospel of easy sexuality and relaxed morality?
HE'S TESTING US!
HE'S GOT HIS EYES ON YOU
(hallelujah!)
God. I logged into bitch about Melbourne Uni, but the daftness on this thread is amazing.
The title, obviously made by a media manager to draw attention, is the ONLY part of the article that in any way implies a causal relationship between heavy metal and mental illness. From what the actual academic was saying it appears the findings of the study suggest that compulsively listening to ANY music on repeat, metal or otherwise, is a potential INDICATOR of mental health issues, but suggests there is a higher correlation when it comes to metal on the basis of 1000 surveys +50 in depth interviews (a study that has significantly more power than 'me and my mates reckon...' but that's neither here nor there).
Effectively, all the actual study seems to be saying is 'if your kid is acting compulsively you should probably have a chat to them about it', which is roughly as controversial as the Queen's outfit today.
But I digress, Melbourne Uni is shit and the bane of my existence. There. That feels better.
You said it better than I did, loki.
hi loki!
