I know there are a couple of similar threads, but I wanted to see if an entire bands output can be whittled down to one solitary defining moment for you, the fan.
For me? Fuck, that's hard. But I think I have to go with my gut:
Stained Mouth (Electric Version) from the Girl Genius EP.
I haven't even listened to it in YEARS, but I know it's the one.
With more than 151 songs (according to my iTunes library), I know it's near-impossible. But please, as kindred spirits, let us share.

hmmm.... prolly Born Sandy Devotional
Triple J listeners may disagree but...
speak up memory? sisters head-on? i don't goddamn know, they're all too good
why are you asking such questions. this is silly.
humph.
Harold Holt was what really reached out and grabbed me the first time I heard it. That's probably the defining BBK moment for me.
Homeless Blueless, Last Cinema, Requiem for a Holden. And just... everything. Dream Audit! What a band.
Maps to help you lose your way, Raymond, Speak up memory... where to begin? So much quality to choose from.
This
Everything Begins and Ends At Exactly The Right Time. It's got that waltz, 3/4 time swagger that the band has in everything, has all the heavy guitar you need and the breakdown that still kills, and the clever turn of phrase that Jamie uses so well.
So...as someone who stopped listening after ''Fear of Girls''....which are the ones to look for? Are they all still in print?
Love that clip steveholt. A BBK gig I shared with about six other people remains to this day one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
Not good for the band I'm sure but it's always those gigs when your're there with only a few people that stand out. I have never been more floored than seeing BBK and Screamfeeder play the front bar at the Holdy in Adelaide among no more than 50 people. It was a sight to behold. A gig I would love to relive, and one which beget an obsession.
Fuck - looking at that clip again how good a drummer was Richard.
There's an old Rage video of BBK programming with Richard professing his love for Dance music. I reckon it shows because his timing with drumming was always a standout.
Anyone remember when they did the Doubt Seeds launch at the Roundhouse, then played Everything Begins and Ends for the encore?
I think that's my defining BBK moment for me.. i.e. me totally semi-drunkenly (ok probably mostly drunkenly) losing my shit while Jamie destroyed that solo.
Father's Hands
Are there any legends out there who can point me to a download of fear of girls? I really like the hounds of love cover btw.
Used to be up on the Lost and Found Music Library blog but that's sadly defunct now.
Which doesn't help at all really.
check pm fitzy
Generic Teen
It's on itunes
Come to think of it wasn't hounds of love on the tap dancing on the titanic ep?
Thanks a million! Yeah I was just thinking about how much I like it...
Gangsterland
Fear of Girls was re-released maybe 4 years ago, is it hard to find again?
I'm very glad most people couldn't just name one. Frankly I'm slightly disgusted with myself for even asking for this feat to be attempted. I remember that Roundhouse gig. Had a massive fight with my (still) girlfriend. Great gig though!
Max Bulk, probably a different gig, but probably the best gig I saw them do was at that Sound and Fury record store just before they released Doubt Seeds. Fuck me, Dream Audit floored me, floored me! I could NOT get it out of my head. About 6 people there too.
Everything Begins... takes the cake for me for Greatest Ever Guitar Solo Ever Ever, if you can call it a solo. I will.
Tapdancing on the Titanic is that one record I've been looking for since I was 16 to no avail (short of spending an absolutely exorbitant amount for it).
Long post!
Everything Begins and Ends At Exactly The Right Time for me too. Was an encore when they played the corner and blew my mind. was obsessed with that song for ages. also gangsterland and generic teen. still pop into my head every now and then...
wow, this thread coming up the top made me excited, thinking there was some kind of bluebottle reunion. alas...
on record, i always liked the prettier and more atmospheric ones. 'scouthall' is my favourite of this bunch, 'barbed wire star', 'girl genius' and 'hello stranger' along the same vein as well. i remember hearing 'raymond' and being amazed. 'ministry of fear' too.
live: i remember hearing 'dream audit' at the anu bar in canberra, and jamie's amp blew up in the noisy bit at the start but it was still amazing. 'gangsterland' in spectrum, before 'doubt seeds' but one of the first with the new lineup, jamie's guitar being passed around the audience creating massive amounts of feedback.
although i'm a massive bbk fan boy i must admit i found 'doubt seeds' disappointing. i always loved how the records just seemed really immediate, kind of like they just had to flow out of them. seems like eventually jamie started putting a lot more thought into it, which made it more derivative of the bands he obviously loves. i think on 'avalon cassettes' he has recaptured a bit more of what i loved about the songwriting, more surreal and automatic.
longer post!
I remember that gig at Spectrum with the guitar passing.. Wow, that was longer ago than I thought.. When good bands played at Spectrum.. Saw the Drones there too..
When I first heard Patient, it was the third album of theirs I owned. Have you ever experienced listening to an album for the first time, and it being EXACTLY what you were hoping it would be? That was the one and only time for me. Not that I don't love other albums as much or more, but it was completely automatic. Maybe it'd be more fun talking about BBKs worst songs.. Atleast maybe we can be more decisive...
Anyone have the gmail password?
I'll put Sonic Elevator up if I can log in.
It's up. No 2 Geeks, I wrote why.
hmm this is tough homeless blueless my favorite BBK song ... the launch of doubt seeds at the spainsh club in nth fitzroy the album from start to finish with choir & big band....
good times
Or maybe mine's Runaway Horse.. Oh wait! Probably Hitchhiking In New Zealand.
Homeless Blueless. This song is everything that's great about BBK.
Also, Cross Purpose has the best lyrics of any song I have ever heard.
homeless blueless is their best song but the last fifteen minutes of come across (cross purpose, crawling with ants, ministry of fear) is the best sequence of three songs i've ever encountered..
I do agree mister turkey.
Claim and Hitchhiking in New Zealand: as the first 2 songs I heard through the website. Simple, complex, loud, smooth, shout, slur, anger, melody... everything is in it. It still holds the universe (or tsunami) of my first Bbk experience.
Then again, Cousin (acoustic version), Return to the city of folded arms (EP version), are of the most often played.
I would vote for Running around the white picket fence too. But then again it depends a lot on my mood. ...
Someone asked about ''after Fear of Girls'', well a lot of BBK is after that...! but the sound is different, less loud or angry maybe... I'm sure they would never come up with another Mr Catharsis now. then again, you never play the same music at 20 and 40 y old, do you?
Hounds of love is on Tap dancing EP
Fear of girls was re released in early 2005, and seeing how it was hard to find before, I guess it must be sold out :p
Soft words will break your bones.
What a song.
Ooh, that reminds me that I always play Rust and the time / Tap dancing instead of Last playboy in town.
I'll try again some day. Although now I uploaded 100% of my BBK discography on my new ipod, and it should keep me company during the 2 days+ 2 nights on the plane next week.
