"The God Delusion" - Richard Dawkins

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago  or at  1:08PM on Thursday, November 30 2006 in books

Me and tang seem to be reading it. For kicks, here how Dawkins describes the Old Testament God...

"...jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak; a vindictive, blood-thirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."

BAM. Take that, God.

slander!

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

I never knew God and I had so much in common..

brokenbrastraps  said about 5 years ago:

yep - that's pretty much what the jews and christians think of the god of the old testament too.

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Ya can't pick and choose, bbs. Otherwise nothing in the bible is valid.

littlearch  said about 5 years ago:

he forgot petulant and immature

seamonkeydisco  said about 5 years ago:

richard dawkins. haha.
he's just bitter about growing up with the name dork.

holyrattlesnakes  said about 5 years ago:

well, those apply to Dawkins at times too, so he can't exactly apply those to his most hated of entities now, can he?

brokenbrastraps  said about 5 years ago:

i don't believe in the bible as a holy book Rachel - so no nothing in there is valid as a framework for organised religion. Some of it's awwight - be nice to your friends, let whales teach you about life, that sort of shit.

So you might as well pick and choose.

Dawkins Is a very serious man. good overview of him in that wired mag article i posted on my aetheist thread.

this God is sounds like a pantheon.

gobetween  said about 5 years ago:

It's true, the bible was written by men.

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

C'mon, give him a break. He's not claiming to be Jesus or a replacement for the messiah. Yet.

RoastOxCrisps  said about 5 years ago:

he can, because he's not asking us to worship him.

i'm about half way through this book.

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

Have you read a CWA cookbook gobetween??

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Shiiiit, bbs. Why not base your life on the teaching of Pippi Longstocking then?

littlearch  said about 5 years ago:

*i don't believe in the bible as a holy book Rachel - *

em...what did I say?

RoastOxCrisps  said about 5 years ago:

really? i'd think that jews take the "old testament" fairly seriously.

holyrattlesnakes  said about 5 years ago:

he's got a pretty bad track record handling any sort of criticism nonester. like a lot of researchers, he's a bit precious at times. but still, the God Delusion's pretty timely.

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

In fact, I thought jews didn't like that whole Jesus thing in the NT?

hahaha I'm a shit stirrer...HAHA

but really modi's is pretty funny. classic modi.

basil seal  said about 3 years ago:

HAHAHAHA the dumbest shit I've read since frankies post

But undeniably true.

we can't verify this.
we don't know about the belief systems of most living things on this planet, so we can't say that the statement is true or false.

basil seal  said about 3 years ago:

christ. i should get back to homework if i'm going to be snarkus-logicus on the innernet.

neontetra  said about 3 years ago:

exactly..I mean look at the behaviour of bees. is the queen bee a living god?

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

You could claim it's not true, I suppose. That would be the whole ''we don't know how plants and microbes think, but that doesn't mean they aren't thinking''

Which is pretty much a bullshit high school stoner thing to say.

neontetra  said about 3 years ago:

not really modi. Bees exhibit behaviour as if the queen is a god. there is no question. really. are you in a bees mind? do bees think?

how come we think animals are not sentient? cos we eat them that is why. Animals are sentient my friend. they think they have beliefs.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

Come on! It's a trick answer! Even if animals and plants didn't lack the brain capacity for religious belief, religion is a human societal construct that would be completely irrelevant to them.

neontetra  said about 3 years ago:

but other animals have complex society's.

hillsonghoods  said about 3 years ago:

basil seal - the majority of living things on this earth are microbes, which don't have neurons, let alone abstract thought.

Modi  said about 3 years ago:

Even though insects are the most numerous creatures on the planet, they are dwarfed in number by the billions of trillions of microbial life that existed way before anything else, and will persist long after anything we can see will be extinct.

Bacteria IS god

neontetra  said about 3 years ago:

how can bacteria be god? it has to form something. God is quintessence.(haha what a word) God is elemental.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

I, for one, welcome our microbe overlords!

tangy_zizzle  said about 3 years ago:

there may be a giant eye in the sky which sees and interprets all life as a single system and applies meaning to it. this eye may know the meaning of life. dude.

neontetra  said about 3 years ago:

I welcome the quintessence. I float in the quintessence.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 3 years ago:

A giant brown-eye?

hillsonghoods  said about 3 years ago:
