Excelsior Hotel - RIP?? (Sydney Live music etc)

columbo  said about 1 year ago  or at  12:54AM on Monday, February 21 2011 in music

Justin Hemmes has just bought the Excelsior Hotel

>

The purchase is (also) regarded as a move to make up ground against The Winery on nearby Crown Street - owned by rival young-gun Fraser Short - which has been very successful at attracting the big-spending party crowd.

a goner for sure. I'm not a huge fan of the room, but that's a massive shame regardless...

esquared  said about 1 year ago:

fucken.

TransientRandom  said about 1 year ago:

So unfair. This place was really becoming awesome. Fuck you, Justin Hemmes!

TransientRandom  said about 1 year ago:

Doesn't he look like a rich posey cunt in that pic? Urrrrggghhh.

anok  said about 1 year ago:

scarf + tshirt = posey cunt

Peter  said about 1 year ago:

he looks like someone from Brisbane. actually, the whole deal, including Hemmes' non-''spokesperson's'' calculated leak, only serves to remind me why i find Brisbane so nauseating. developers (dread term) who cater to 'wealthy people buying into apartments...' (the fact that the word apartments is even used is enough to sicken me. but hicks love that. apparently it makes them feel very urbane). i can just see it now - because i see it in Fortitude Valley each time i pass through that shithole: tee shirt'n'scarf wearing coolsies all trying to outdo one another in their identikit looks of homogenized rebellion. feeding and watering from balconies high prior to motoring down to tryhard Wynumm to convince themselves that Brisbane really is a modern city.

yawn...

Always a shame to lose a venue in this city.

Hazard_Man  said about 1 year ago:

Hang on, its not closing, nothing's been said about filling it with pokies, or even closing it as a music venue. If anything, it could get a face lift, and lose it's general meh-ness. Putting it up against the winery is a bit of a joke though... a pub vs a wine bar/restaurant close to oxford st and a strip of top restaurants & bars.
Devonshire is primarily a residential street... good luck trying to do much more with it!

shaun  said about 1 year ago:

It's time for Surry Hills to be abandoned and for the gradual process of gentrification to be triggered elsewhere.

Hazard_Man  said about 1 year ago:

Oops, Foveaux, not Devonshire. Still... it's a crap st :P

rosevich  said about 1 year ago:

he's a cunt for sure

funtimes  said about 1 year ago:

I just played there (for the first time) on Friday, good venue. Foveaux st. is not exactly activity central though.

JonBonJovial  said about 1 year ago:

I think what's fucked is that photography studios are just so damn chilly.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

That photo does not bode well.

liamsnice  said about 1 year ago:

Who is he even? Never heard the name.

kittymunroe  said about 1 year ago:

Goodbye $3 bubblies on a Friday :(

goldfoot  said about 1 year ago:

This seems a strange purchase to me. Though it only just down the road from the Beresford the the difference in the locations is vast. It's a lot more grimey down that end of Surry Hills and there's no restaurant strip or much else around there to attract people. Hopefully they'll persist with live music while they wait for the gentrification crowd to hit that part of town.

I think location wise he would have been better off buying the Hoey.

Hope you're right, but I doubt it.

Aw this makes me so sad. The Excelsior is currently my fave small Sydney band venue & this does not smell right.

no columbo. your eye's do not deceive you. that is a photo from today's daily telegraph. black eye was incurred / obtained at the opening party. something about a ceiling joist, or walking into the door...

NIGHTCLUB baron Justin Hemmes had a gun put to his head during an armed robbery at one of his Sydney hotels last night.

Disgruntled punters?

wipey  said about 11 months ago:

He should have bought something in a better location then.

columbo  said about 11 months ago:

so this place is working out well for him so far - in just a few short weeks it's all black eyes, guns to the head..

anonymous  said about 11 months ago:

Disgruntled punters?

Maybe, they did rob the Rose in Erko as well.

wipey  said about 11 months ago:

The cops should have arrested him for swearing at them.

wipey  said about 11 months ago:

What?

He then added: ''When he arrived he came out and I went they've gone that way ... he says get out of my way … you know what I mean … that was the beginning of the end ... oh Jesus guys.''

More likely disgruntled at their beer prices. $6.80 for a coopers... ROBBERY !

anonymous  said about 11 months ago:

anonymous  said about 11 months ago:

guess it means they have plenty of cash to steal.

scallywag  said about 11 months ago:

look at this finger-pointing born-to-rule fucker

copper should have grabed it and given it a little twist until it went ''pop''

wipey  said about 11 months ago:

I hope he goes bankrupt.

sci_fi  said about 11 months ago:

I've little sympathy for the man. Can anyone confirm/deny that he's bought up the Duck & Swan as well? They're ripping the guts out of it as we speak - it was one of my favourite pubs in town

anonymous  said about 11 months ago:

hmm, could just be a renovation, him buying something usually makes the papers.
