Ben Salter, of the Gin Club, Giants of Science, Young Liberals, et al has made a solo record. You can help put it out.
It's tentatively entitled ''The Cat''. The guts of it was recorded in late 2010 with a production team consisting of Salter, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones) & Robert F. Cranny (Sarah Blasko, 78 Saab) at Liddiard's rural property in Havilah, Victoria.
It features Cranny on keys, Angus Agars (The Gin Club, Tex Perkins, The Vandas) on drums and Ola Karlsson (The Gin Club, O Band, El Madrigal) on bass, as well as guests Joel Silbersher (GOD, Hoss, Dirty Three) and Tom Lyncolgn (The Nation Blue, Harmony, Lee Memorial) on guitar, vocals and Korg mini synth.
As well as this, Melbourne jazz legend Julien Wilson plays some tenor and alto saxophone; and multi instrumentalist Peter Novotnik contributed Swedish Bagpipes, Hurdy Gurdy and various exotic flutes, and some hot babes did backup vocals.

I saw this on Facebook, was confused. Love Salter, hate cats. Paradox.

So much so I said it twice, evidently with slight paraphrasing.
maybe it will even out to a ''like?''
If I could get a cat with a Ben Salter hairstyle it might break even.
interesting concept... pre-funding
I reckon Looch and I will be up for a pre-payment on the album
Didn't everyone just can the hell out of Butcher birds for doing the same thing?
i'm keen on pre-ordering to help the bands in advance -not sure how much i like the ''pay me $1000 and i will write a song about you'' stuff - the different packages for vinyl, t shirts signed posters are all cool - not sure how much i'd pay for my fave band to take me out on a date

Said what I was thinking. Didn't want to be too controversial though.

But if we aren't on the internet we can't donate to Ben Salter's album.
:/
oh sozzzzzzzzzzz i didn't think that one through
Bought the $25 package. I have great respect for Mr Salter, his songwriting and his voice.
I feel a little differently about this compared to how I felt about Butcher Birds.
My issue with BBs was that they were asking for large amounts to fund a 7'' purely for the novelty of releasing a 7''. So - an item with no real strategic or substantial value. Crowd-sourcing (especially when - even at the minimum cost - it would be a very, very expensive 7'') just seemed a little rich - and it was just going to be a thrown-together home recording as well. But I care a lot less about it now than I did that particular night, for whatever reason...
But an album - this is really just a pre-ordering system, with a few extra ''zealot'' options. Although I find the more extreme price points a little weird like others, the cheaper ones are quite comparable to what you'd pay for such packages. Really he's just after some advance funds to launch it onto the scene. It's the kind of thing fans will do to help someone move forward with what they're doing.
It's quite possible the difference is slight between those two scenarios. Proof's in the pudding I guess. If either artist/band gets the money fronted up and they do the things they're hoping to, more power to them.
This is a fairly present issue in my universe at the moment. Crowd-sourcing would be a moderately good option to solve a funding problem I have at present with The Gate, but I'm having a hard time feeling comfortable about doing it (some days more than others). But that's just me... everyone's different.
$2000 to record, press and print a 7-inch sounds reasonable to me. I guess the difference is that Ben has recorded his and Butcher Birds hadn't, otherwise it's exactly the same. Hotel Wrecking City Traders doing same thing also.
I would float the idea with the Gate, if people want it, they will help out, that's how it is, if the alternative is losing a venue (or whatever) why not? i think it helps with a sense of community in a way, people getting involved like that. It's different than asking for charity if people actually get something in return for their contribution.
Reminds me of the Red Paintings
I think the drummer Angus used to work at the Grace Emily many moons ago.
Maybe.
Gus has worked a few different pubs and bands in his time
I was moreso trying to figure out if it was the same Angus. Was he in a ska band at some point?
I think he used to work the rainbow a bit, not sure about the grace. He's from the Vandas via Adelaide, I don't think ska is his thing
I think it was years and years ago.
