Funk

triptolemus  said about 5 years ago  or at  11:53AM on Thursday, June 29 2006 in music

Tripto Jr loves RHCP....a lot. He's obsessed. He particularly likes the funkier stuff, so I thought I might expose him to some real funk music.

Can anyone recommend some good funk music?

White Men Can't Funk.

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Well the obvious one is James Brown.

Also, you've GOTTA get him Parliament - Mothership Connection.

Queen Bob  said about 5 years ago:

funk eh?

anonymous  said about 5 years ago:

the old gregg episode of mighty boosh, has the true story of funk.

he'll love it.

jake  said about 5 years ago:

Bar-kays, Blackbyrds, Betty Davis, Curtis Mayfiled, Oliver Sain, The Soul Searchers, Kool and the Gang, Skull Snaps, Isaac Hayes, Simtec and Wylie, Badder than Evil, Jimmy Smith, Rufus Thomas, Banbarra, Cymande, The New Birth, Lafayett Afro Rock Band, The Meters, Herman Kelly and much more. Just don't get him into collecting it as it consumes you!!

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Avoid Rick James.

I don't care what anyone said, he was NOT GOOD.

temporarybenbutler  said about 5 years ago:

Badder than Evil

Oooh yeah.

Mid-late Tempts is pretty funky too.

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

More recently, although kinda dance-y, tell him to check out the Cuban Brothers. Although recorded they're more of a house/pop thing. Live they're amazing though.

Breakestra (sp?) is another cool funk band.

Yeah still got my original pressing of Gordon's War soundtrack......the Hot Wheels track is Badder's best work

temporarybenbutler  said about 5 years ago:

The other day SaucyJack was playing some newish record on the Daptone label which was a dead ringer for late-60s/early-70s funk soul. Can't remember who it was by though.

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Not Sharon Jones And The Dapkings, temp?

spazmonaut  said about 5 years ago:

you wanna know what i'm saying, don't ya?

Godzilla  said about 5 years ago:

I used to like local funksters, Swoop. Pity they're not still around. The Professor Groove thing isn't as good

temporarybenbutler  said about 5 years ago:

Nah, one of their other acts. The Dapkings are pretty damn funky as well, though.

SheikYerbouti  said about 5 years ago:

Good evening.
Do not attempt to adjust your radio, there is nothing wrong.
We have taken control as to bring you this special show.
We will return it to you as soon as you are groovy.

jake  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah they have loads of new funk bands on their label. As for locally you can't front on The Bamboos.

PelicanGodOfJupiter  said about 5 years ago:

Bootsy Collins - Rubber Band is a rad album too.

Ubu  said about 5 years ago:

All excellent suggestion by Jake. Also...

  • Betty Everett
  • Anna King
  • Willie Hutch
  • Bohannon
  • Spanky Wilson
  • Lyn Collins

Ubu  said about 5 years ago:

*suggestions

Inactivist  said about 5 years ago:

Ubu, I often think you're just making these names up. I'm most fond of Spanky Wilson.

SheikYerbouti  said about 5 years ago:

Just uploaded Parliament-Funkadelic's "P-Funk" to the M&N Gmail account. Grooviest tune ever!

bigbadbo  said about 5 years ago:

Cold Blood, Willie Hutch, Betty Davis....just for some not mentioned

Ubu  said about 5 years ago:

shhhhh inny. Don't let anyone know.

I believe Spanky only released one album. I saw an original LP version in Stockholm a year ago for $500. She does a killer version of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love".

jake  said about 5 years ago:

yeah ubu have heard of it but never heard it. bohannon is cool too, heavily sampled album Stop and Go is the one. I have all of Betty Davis' vinyls and one that came with a great fold out huge poster of her! There are so many to mention though.
Anyone else here dig? Go vinyl-hunting for old funk?

Skull Snaps - Skull Snaps
Catalogue Number: AZTCD1001
SRP: $24.95
Release Date: Dec. 6, 2005

”Now if you check my pulse it beats Skull Snaps.”
—Beastie Boys

Skull Snaps is a legendary funk album that has long been shrouded in obscurity. The band recorded their self-titled debut and a handful of singles in 1973, and then vanished without a trace. In recent years, their vinyl has become ubiquitously sampled and highly collectible. The monstrous break that opens up their classic cut, It’s A New Day, furnished the beat for countless hip-hop hits of the mid-‘90s (along with James Brown’s Funky Drummer and Sly & the Family Stone’s Sing A Simple Song, It’s A New Day contains the most sampled break in music history).

More than just a treasure trove for the Hip Hop community, though, Skull Snaps stands as a classic in pure funk and soul. The band's irresistible sound embraces the black vocal group sound of early ‘70s Temptations, Chi-Lites, and Dramatics, cut with an unmistakable originality. Every song is blessed with a gospel-soaked call and response dynamic that contrasts gritty lead vocals with the band’s perfect harmonies.

Heavily bootlegged, Aztec Music’s reissue of Skull Snaps is the first release that has been officially sanctioned by the band. This deluxe version has been digitally remastered, with extensive liner notes containing new interviews and rare photos, and contains 2 bonus tracks – packaged in a 6 panel digi-pak.

Tracklisting:
1. My Hang Up Is You [MP3]
2. Having You Around
3. Didn’t I Do It To You
4. All Of A Sudden
5. It’s A New Day [MP3]
6. I’m Your Pimp
7. I Turn My Back On Love
8. Trespassing
9. I’m Falling Out Of Love

Bonus Tracks:
10. Al’s Razor Blade [MP3]
11. Ain’t That Loving You

betty davis is awesome and funky, but if this is tripto jr we're speaking about, she's kind of...unsubtle about sex.

the new mastersounds are awesome.

hillsonghoods  said about 5 years ago:

"thrust" by herbie hancock is tremendously funky.

anonymous  said about 5 years ago:

wouldn't surprise me jake, i'm happy with my aztec copy (though i can't find the actual cd, which is annoying me)

jake  said about 5 years ago:

yeah that Thrust records has some of my favourite bass playing from Paul Jackson. I found an old VHS bootleg of herbie and chick corea in some tv studio playing tracks from thrust and headhunters album

jake  said about 5 years ago:

great album anon.......i've been tempted so many times to sample the New Day drums, but can't do it, just been done too many times

Can't believe i forgot The Jimmy Castor Bunch, It's Just Begun is one of my favourite albums.

JRB  said about 3 years ago:

Funk hey? This is Funk N Stein:

I bought their album when I was in Israel. Real nice stuff. They're playing at The Prince in December. From what I've been told it should be one hell of a show.

JunkiePhil  said about 3 years ago:

Can anyone tell me if there is another good LP by Jimmy Castor Bunch?
Think I'm starting to tire of It's Just Begun

__v  said about 2 years ago:

I note with some interest that Fred Wesley is touring soon.

There sure is duder...I have ''The Everything Man'' and ''Butt Of Course''. Both are solid and recommended.

i also discovered this week the debut album by Cameo. Sounds nothing like the later period cod-piece crazy voice steez. More like a cross between The Isley Brothers and Parliament/Funkadelic. Very cool indeed.

As well, the album ''Wild & Peaceful'' by Kool & The Gang found it's way onto my home stereo on the weekend, and that grooved like a mofo!

jake  said about 2 years ago:

And as featured on Psyclops awesome blog....

Some funk here...

Also I'm on 3RRR tmrw filling in for Johnny Topper's ''New & Groovy'' tmrw at 2pm..
