Clinic

Why is there no thread already devoted to this band?

I adore them... so much that I flew to Barcelona last night to see them there for fear of not getting a chance in Australia. They were brilliant, if a little strung out, but absolutely excellent. Covered a fairly decent spread of all the albums, except the first one. My god. No encore though... they were out of there like lightning. I think it might have been the drugs. At the biggest warehouse club night I have ever seen in my life... fucking impressive. The Catalans know how to party.

Unfortunately I haven´t heard the new album yet... anyone here who has?

I have Internal Wrangler. iTunes says it's from 2000?

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

yeah, that´s the first one. it is from 2000. their sound hasn´t changed at all.

empra  said about 5 years ago:

Having a listen now. Can't say I've ever given it much of a chance to be honest. Pretty good so far.

mrbarb2  said about 5 years ago:

The new album 'Visitations' will be released in Oz on Jan 27th

blake3030  said about 5 years ago:

Yeah, each album is pretty much exactly the same. I think that's why I got bored of them.

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

love the first few albums. distortions is a mix tape staple. but not heard the new one yet. would love to see them, but i guess the chances of them ever coming here are minimal.

scissors  said about 5 years ago:

i really loved walking with thee, though i get a bit tired of his nasal voice, and think the surgical masks are a dumb gimmick. blame the drugs... i also got bored by the end of winchester cathedral (?), so i won't be buying any more of their albums until they shape up. bitches.

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

i was thinking through the gig how monotone his voice can get... i think one of their main problems is that he has no variety from song to song. and the guitar sounds are always exactly the same too. some of the new stuff sounded great though, particularly from the drummer.
yes, they were in their surgical gear, but don´t they have another gimmick they mix it up with? always reminds me of further and their butchers outfits.

Man! You must be cashed up.

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

hahahaha... it was a last minute flight too. but of course, it was from london.

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

I rather like Clinic. I'm a tad jealous that you a) saw them live and b) saw them live in Barcelona.

Punch  said about 5 years ago:

fuck, barca is so good, kuro. i´m coming back next year, despite all of those other cities i haven´t seen.

i didn´t want to be in the vicinity yet never see them. or risk them breaking up. they are playing london on december 14 though... shit timing. maybe next year will see them tour here. surely something´s gotta give.

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Archie Bronson Outfit are supporting the London gig - should be a great show

kuroneko  said about 5 years ago:

punchy, I may be there in Feb / Mar.

Listening to the new album now.I love his voice

Seymour  said about 5 years ago:

Haven't heard the new one yet.. any variety on there?

One of my favourite things in my vinyls:

djbollocks  said about 5 years ago:

The new Clinic album Visitations is better than Winchester Cathedral, but it's still like they've only got 3 songs that they keep making over and over again.

gunshot_glitter  said about 5 years ago:

true..their sticking to the winning formula or heavy drums and lilting lyrics

Ubu  said about 5 years ago:

The EP comp and Internal Wrangler are awesome. I agree re Walking With Thee, some great songs on that album. Come Into Our Room is one of the finest songs they've written.

For the completeists, check out Ade Blackburn's first band Pure Morning. A bit darker and more MBV-esque. Top notch.

VoxFuzz  said about 5 years ago:

Here's the Other Music review of Visitations.

All the pieces of Clinic’s puzzle are instantly recognizable. The huge Phil Spector/Joe Meek-esque production, the repetitive Velvets chug, Augustus Pablo’s melodica, the energetic garage rock fuzz attack and spacey psychedelia, and Ade Blackburn’s peculiar through-the-teeth vocal delivery. As much fun as the trainspotting is, it’s hard to compare the sum of these parts to any single artist or band, which is what makes their sound so unique. It’s most certainly music by record collectors (correct me if I’m wrong here), but it doesn’t sound studied or academic. If anything, Clinic sound sinister, possessed, and emotional, all at once. Visitations is probably their least introspective album to date, which suits me perfectly since I’ve always liked them best at their most frenzied and psyched out. Check “Family” and “Tusk” and then surrender. A return to form, as they say. Good to have you back, Clinic. I knew that wasn’t really you on Winchester Cathedral. [AK]

ffarff  said about 5 years ago:

the first song of theirs i heard was Magic Boots, and fuck i hated that song .but Walking With Thee is so brilliant so i gave them another go and what do you know, i think im obsessed now.

New Clinic album FUNF a compilation of b-sides came out on 18.6.07 on Domino.

carlos esq  said about 4 years ago:

I just rediscovered Internal Wrangler today. So good. Got a lot of time for Walking With Thee too, 'Harmony' especially. Later stuff is a bit for formulaic...but it's a bleepin' good formula.

I heartily endorse an Australian tour.

frenk  said about 4 years ago:

ruling. one of my fave new finds.

ProDelgado  said about 4 years ago:

They're supporting the Arcade Fire on their UK arena tour later in the year.

Scientificsupercake  said about 4 years ago:

still supporting after all these years?

i love this band.. wish they'd tour

paraphernalia74  said about 4 years ago:

What album is Second Line on? That's all I have - a lonely 7''. Or is it not on any album?

Earl Brutus  said about 4 years ago:

Do It! is still holding up pretty well for me and I've had it awhile. It is a very groovy album.

feralmedia  said about 4 years ago:

Have they changed at all?

djbollocks  said about 4 years ago:

They'll never change feral, I think that's part of their appeal.

carlos esq  said about 4 years ago:

ad on the side seems to be clutching at straws - a 7.7 from pitchfork the best they got? some interesting formatting too. that said, i liked the brief listen I've had of the album

djbollocks  said about 4 years ago:

But 7.7 is pretty generous for Pitchfork.

steveholt  said about 4 years ago:

JB Hifi on Bourke St has each of their albums for 5 bucks a pop. I just bought FUNF and Visitations.

toadphoney  said about 3 years ago:

Return of Evil Bill. This song kicks ass... i have never heard of these fucks but have done some acting in a wee film and found out tonight that this is the theme song to my entry. My weird ex-olypian hungarian flatmate heard it from the lounge room and got all excited and started whistling the tune after we turned the song off... now we keep playing little bits of it on youtube to excite him... he babbles in broken english sounding like count dracula about how much he loves it! sounds westernish.

Toadphoney - Takin yo stuff.

Ubu  said about 2 years ago:

been listening to internal wrangler this morning. this record has not aged in the slightest, quite the opposite, it sounds even better than i remembered. did anyone pick up do it!? how does it hold up? i wished that they did a full on psych/jazz record, all the right elements are there on their records.

meg  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah last one i got was FUNF. Wonder if they're still 5bux at JB?

meg  said about 8 months ago:

Listening to Clinic's more chilled out 2010 release Bubblegum and enjoyin it. :) Don't know how I missed this when it came out?
