Falafel - the food of kings

klaximopark  said about 1 year ago  or at  2:01PM on Tuesday, September 28 2010 in industry

Does anyone know where to get the packs of ready-made falafel balls?

I got some from the supermarket last week but, according to a surprisingly helpful and knowledgeable dude there, that was the last bunch they'd stocked.

preferably in the carlton/fitzroy area.

Piedimontes, Nth Fitzroy.

And yes - Falafel + hommus + chilli sauce + tomato + tabouli + flatbread = genius

Unquestionably food for royalty. but brands determines whether the King rules an empire or a slum.

The frozen falafel balls from Cedars Bakery in Preston are very good.

bullshite is not a word. not even a fake word!

er, appreciates

klaximopark  said about 1 year ago:

oh the variety at the johnston st coles.
and they even had some nice looking tabouleh in the deli.

and tugz, no hommus? that's crazy talk.

nyx  said about 1 year ago:

Johnston St Coles has a surprising and pleasing amount of vegetarian stuff. They know their demographic.

My favourite place does tahini only, but hommus can be put on by request also. It's the no tabouli that I take issue with.

Agreed on the turnip pickle though. Mint leaves also go very well on a felafel roll, but now I'm getting fancy.

So despo for a trip to Hijazi's!

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I'm not keen on turnip pickle. Polski Ogorki though - yum!

Sonsa Imports - the turkish grocers on smith street - have everything to meet your falafel needs

Nah. This is not the traditional way. It is like how people burn their absinthe.

klaximopark  said about 1 year ago:

traditional shmaditional.

tugboat  said about 1 year ago:

And also hommus is too heavy and strong. Kinda overpower the herbs in the mashed falafel ballz. Go get the fava beans falafel at Half Moon Cafe. Totes rad.

You know, a nice bit of juicy lamb really shits from a great height on falafel any day of the week.

I could kill a falafel right about now... might drop by Sandos on my way home.

fzchk  said about 1 year ago:

You can't kill a falafel Frankie...they're already dead.

Jazzy  said about 1 year ago:

No, isn't that the person who eats it?

TransientRandom  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah, I always wondered about that tradition of burying people with mountains of Felafel. The last funeral I went to smelled so delicious!

Jazzy  said about 1 year ago:

If it weren't so tragic, peoples insanity would never fail to amaze me. I just hope everyone out there takes care of their emotional heath. I have been saying for a long time now.

TransientRandom  said about 1 year ago:

In my culture, you have to say the name of someone you wish dead before you take the first bite, unless you have it with garlic sauce. Being vegan, and so many garlic sauces being made with yoghurt, sometimes I can't. My mum is uber superstitious, and makes me eat a full garlic clove if this happens - she cries if I don't.

Falafel are alright, but food of kings? I think not.

SGH +/- Lozenge.

Wanna fight?

Jazzy  said about 1 year ago:

Are you serious, wow, you wish people dead in your culture? That's very different to my culture, but then I don't have the same history as your culture probably. I love garlic sauce and I love tzaki and felafel etc, I love middle eastern food.

What is it based on, if you don't mind me asking?

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

I think TR's religion is 'bullshit artist', Jazzy.

had mankoushe falafel last night.
wow....just wow.
thanks for the referral, JD.

I was sat here wondering what on earth I was going to procure as food, when this helpful thread compelled me to pay Zeno's a visit. Delicious! It's gone up quite a bit though - rolls are now $7, but sooo, soooo worth it.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Checked out the relatively new falafel option sort of opposite where the Afterdark used to be in Thornbury, couple of shops north of that church. Fucking tasty and a massive roll with a bevy of ingredients for $6.50. Small courtyard out the back with booths to avoid the other humanoids.

I finally blogged about Mankoushe's freaking awesomeness.

They open at 8, It is sort of viable to grab a spinach triangle for breakfast before work!
