Spirited - Claudia Karvan / Matt King

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago  or at  10:28AM on Thursday, August 26 2010 in television

So, I watched the first episode of this new drama on Foxtel last night. I quite enjoyed that. Excellent acting from Claudia Karvan and Matt King and some decent, funny script writing. Any show that uses The Saints' (I'm) Stranded as its theme is already a winner in my book. Any thoughts so far?

Spirited website.

drop dead fred.

(there's a moderately detailed review in the monthly magazine this month)

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I never thought of that, anon. DDF meets Life On Mars (the british one).

CK lives just round the corner from my house in Redfern. She often walks her dog through park on our street. One time my friend was also walking his dog in the park. It spotted CK's dog and made a bee line for it. They were scared that it was going to tear her little dog to pieces- however instead it mounted her pooch and started pumping away.....until it was promptly pulled off.

Embarrassing stuff.

Haven't seen Spirited yet.

toadphoney  said about 1 year ago:

gross - who pulled off the dog?

toadphoney  said about 1 year ago:

I knew of a guy called Hunter that wanked a dog off in yr 9. He was in yr 9 - the dog didn't go to school. I was in yr 10.

toadphoney  said about 1 year ago:

I haven't yet seen this show. I do like Claudia Karvan.

Arthurly  said about 1 year ago:

take it to the Claudia Karvan thread FFS

carli  said about 1 year ago:

i watched it and enjoyed it. will be watching again.

Texaco  said about 1 year ago:

I've not seen anyone wanking a dog, but I did see a guy sucking a dogs nipples at a party once.

toadphoney  said about 1 year ago:

I wonder if it was Hunter Cogan, the dog wanker? Seems like an logical step in K9 relations. Or perhaps heavy petting and nipple sucking should come before masturbation. Dogs are such fickle beasts.

Texaco  said about 1 year ago:

It was quite sickening to witness I must say.

CK would not approve.

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

That ginger cat is a star!
So it's a new take on the Ghost & Mrs Muir then?

russiancaravan  said about 1 year ago:

I've seen the first couple of episodes. The second was better than the first, but it struggles a bit. Put it this way, the there's-a-rock-star-haunting-my-apartment premise makes more sense than some of the more prosaic plot points.

prince  said about 1 year ago:

The music is done by Jed Kurzel from The Mess Hall. The opening music is Stranded by The Saints and the first episode's closing credits was CW Stoneking.

kuroneko  said about 1 year ago:

The closing tune last night was rather lovely. Nice to hear a snippet of Eddy Current in there this week too. Not a bad show, rather enjoyable.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

I've not watched it. Saw the ads a bit though.

Why is Claudia K dreaming about Super Hans?

littlesmoke  said about 1 year ago:

I was well over this show before they'd even aired a single episode....fox have been plugging it endlessly for months....over saturated promotion = ''fuck, hasn't that show even started yet!?''.

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

What a brilliant series this is turning out to be; really finely balanced and well judged
Creating a false achive is full of pitfalls - and they managed to avoid them all

Great to see Doc Neeson return to acting and wonderful to se John Bluthal back on screen.
The emotional side is slowly building too - I reckon this may yet pack a real punch that way
So great to see such a high quality new local drama - those on free-to-air often fail to reach this level

prince  said about 1 year ago:

I liked the scene where Claudia karvan is talking to the ghost and she pulls out the mobile so she doesn't look crazy.

By the way this show is 1000 times better than offspring.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I loved the fake music doco. It was so spot-on in its characterisations of has-been interviewees. Unlike i-Rock or whatever it was called. The Doc Neeson cameo was perfect. You can tell that the writers / directors of this show actually have a bit of a clue and know how to pull off a convincing music-related joke, like the 12 year old kid dismissively saying ''The Nerve? They were just ripping off The Clash.''

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

it's okay without being spectacular.

filterfeed  said about 1 year ago:

not sure i can stop watching now. damn it.

prince  said about 1 year ago:

last nights 3rd ep was good. hitting it's straps methinks.

fudge  said about 1 year ago:

1/2 way through 1st episode, I'm a little put off by the average lighting and poor colour grading. It's good to see CK play a different character and she completely looks the part too.

rosevich  said about 1 year ago:

SUPER HANS!!

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

most recent ep was very, very funny.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I thoroughly enjoyed the last episode. The husband playing 'Come Said The Boy' on the acoustic guitar at his daughter's school's World Music Day was a genius piece of cringe-comedy.

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

The husband playing 'Come Said The Boy' on the acoustic guitar at his daughter's school's World Music Day was

sadly lifted straight from About A Boy

Butcher Birds  said about 1 year ago:

it looks like a fucking terrible premise for a show

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

sadly lifted straight from About A Boy

I'd like to think of it as a knowing reference ;)

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

Apparently it's just been announced that it's been recomissioned for a second series

I have mixed feelings about this; as much as I'm enjoying it, I wonder if it wouldn't be better has a self-cvontained story?
Life on Mars would have been better off as a single series; does everything need more?
They'll certainly have to come up with something substantially different for S2 to keep it fresh

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

agreed. once henry's story arc is finalised, where on earth is it going to go?

kuroneko  said about 1 year ago:

Loving the show, agree that don't know that it needs a second series.

''That's right. I'm fucking you, Viola.''

cue peals of laughter

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I can't believe it's over. The last three episodes were absolutely amazing. I nearly shed a tear at the end.

sniff

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

it was very, very good indeed.

they left it open for a series 2 with steve's latest craziness, but it was pretty neatly tied up.

claudia karvan is so, so good.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

they left it open for a series 2

I thought that too. Fingers crossed!!

I felt/feel the same way! Haven't seen all the episodes (missed the first ones). I probably like this show more as I have crushes on both Super Hans and Claudia

HEB  said about 1 year ago:

claudia karvan is so, so good.

For me, she spent too much time acting with her glasses, trying too hard not to be Frankie from LMW
She did settle down as the series progressed though

That said, I still wish they'd have tied it off and let it lie
That ending just made me remember Truly Madly Deeply

But how great to hear Another Day In The Sun by The Moffs

FrankieTeardrop  said about 6 months ago:

First episode of Season 2 = fucking genius. Can't wait to see where they take this.

kuroneko  said about 4 months ago:

Awesome. Roll on Season 3 (please).

whatwhat  said about 4 months ago:

yairs, tis a truly outstanding series.

always so surprising which way it goes.

HEB  said about 3 months ago:

So kuro - that's all folks....

FOXTEL Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh:

“Spirited was a brave and bold piece of contemporary television drama, as only FOXTEL can deliver. We are enormously proud of the show and its performance over two seasons. It was an intriguing storyline, beautifully directed and performed by a stellar cast. Producers Claudia Karvan and Jacquelin Perske delivered a remarkable Australian series which has resonated strongly with audiences. I feel it’s right for Spirited to go out on a high with the impossible love story of Suzy and Henry resolved in a way that’s as close to a happily ever after as was ever really possible.”

''We appreciate and thank you for your passionate support of Spirited and we promise to continue bringing you the best in Australian and international drama.''

whatwhat  said about 3 months ago:

really?

i thought the ending left it wide open for another series. i wonder what claudio and co will do next.

kuroneko  said about 3 months ago:

Yeh, I saw that posted last night. Matt King says he is going to try and convince them to do a third.

whatwhat  said about 3 months ago:

claudio? claudia

kuroneko  said about 3 months ago:

NOW WHAT?

whatwhat  said about 3 months ago:

i guess she just spirits away all the time. if the season is fiinito, i reckon that'd have to be the assumption.
