My new favourite show at the moment is on SBS at 6.00pm weekdays. It's called ''Letters and Numbers'' and all you really need to know is there in the title.

official website: www.sbs.com.au/shows/lettersandnumbers

apparently they are currently looking for melbourne contestants. get involved!

That's Numberwang!

Great show! Endorse!

Can't help laughing at the host. He's like a completely straight, completely non ironic Shaun Micallef.

ill  said about 1 year ago:

This show is brilliant. Although, I find it so unnecessary that the mathematician is always decked out in heels and a dress.

Also, just watch what the host does with his hands. They seem to just levitate.

He looks like the evil gremlin.

We love this show - I hate the smug fucker champ at the moment. oh I only have an 8 letter word while he pretends to be all humble while really he is giving himself a bonk-on.

Also how hilarious is the prize - here is your dictionary.

  • I hate the smug fucker champ at the moment

he is a published crossword creator...god dammit.

haha, how did I miss this comment first time round?

slothman  said about 1 year ago:

the dictionary is the best prize!

current champ clearly knows his shit, it's difficult not to want to beat him. my mum is a cryptic crossword devotee and has major problems with the DA bloke with the dictionary. Dreaded Awful was what she called him.

the first rule about Street Countdown is that you MUST talk about Street Countdown. Honestly the more people who get involved the more fun it is for everybody.

Which thread will reign supreme??

ill  said about 1 year ago:

the original prankster will win out

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

Actually, if this indeed is the show, myself and M&N user 'Kit' were regaled on Saturday morning by the actual numbersmith (ie, the attractive lady is wearing an earpiece (actually that's not to say she can't do it, but he's in a control room making sure)).

Anyway, everytime the girl looks like she's just about to or jsut has laugh(ed) he's just said ''That's Numberwang!'' down the earpiece.

slothman  said about 1 year ago:

WOW!

k2  said about 1 year ago:

wait wait wait.

Are you saying that someone is saying Numberwang to the chick with the whiteboard? Surely you jest, sir.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

I most certainly do not. However, I may not be correct and either way you didn't hear it from me.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

now I REALLY love this show.

SGH  said about 1 year ago:

Apaz. there are many parts that needed to be refilmed due to laughing.

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

The word nerd on Letters and Numbers has been on 774 for the last hour, he's written a book that is a puzzle.

ashthetenth  said about 1 year ago:

fucking love this show! the word man annoys the shit out of me though.

i'm somewhat upset that Lily may not do the maths herself. :(

i usually win the number games but struggle with the letters.

Morris Iemma  said about 1 year ago:

it is clearly modelled off countdown, hence the vaguely pseudo-attractive female in a dress and high-heels doing maths and a host who is barely sentient.

Morris Iemma  said about 1 year ago:

Oh, I left out the ''word expert'' twat. The guy that thinks anagrams are special.

You weren't the only one thinking that........

Dictionary!!!! Fuck Yeah!

After watching a week of Letters and Numbers episodes I've gotten no smarter, but a sport commentary started to pop into my head.

''Oh he's obviously on the back foot now so he's gone for the awkward 2 vowel draw to shake the game up!''

''Critical juncture! Pressure mounting! Both players faltering on the numbers tonight!''

MarsAudiac  said about 2 months ago:

Yeah cos any idiot can totally do what she does... hey are you BADALEX?

OH HAI COCKNECK.

Ummm... I thought this was bleedingly obvious, but you do realise it's not live TV, don't you? You do know that if she makes a mistake or doesn't nut it out in time, they stop the camera or do a retake? Do you really think old whatsisname manages to find every single combination in the 9 letters EVERY TIME just by glancing down his nose at the dictionary and flipping the pages back and forth? Don't you think it's a bit funny that Lily has never made a stuff up, ever, or fumbled her words?

And are you seriously mistaking a clever parlour trick that a computer can do in 3 nanoseconds for genuine intelligence? Yes, she is a genuinely intelligent woman, but I think this is reflected better through her academic achievements than what she does on the show. I wonder how many people on her facebook fan page know what her areas of academic interest are? I bet more of them have a better idea of her bust size.

MarsAudiac  said about 2 months ago:

Sorry, that sounds like I'm taking away from her. I'm not.

If it were a man doing her job, I'd say a lot less would be a fan.
Why? Because she's a beautiful woman. obviously.
I'm sure the hundreds of slavering male fans read playboy for the articles too.
I'm not saying 'don't be a fan' - hell, I'm a huge fan. What I'm saying is that it's unfortunate that a woman has to show her assets to gain recognition for her intelligence, and when her intelligence is recognised, it's in a manner better proportionate to her appearance than her achievements.

Tramdriver  said about 2 months ago:

OK fair enough it is TV after all I guess there is bound to be some editing. From memory she is doing applied maths and applied biology - something to do with ocean (!?!). But this confuses me:

MarsAudiac: And are you seriously mistaking a clever parlour trick that a computer can do in 3 nanoseconds for genuine intelligence?

Look I'm a total tard when it comes to maths so I admire people that can do it well in the same way I might admire an athlete being able to do something I never could. I'm not sure what you're idea of ''genuine intelligence'' is or what your gripe is there.

Tramdriver  said about 2 months ago:

MarsAudiac - Yeah as I think I said earlier, I had someone I used to work with who knew some mathematicians and the producers were asking around for an attractive female to work on the show (I'm not sure if 'attractive' was the word they used, but you get the idea). I can't front- as this thread will attest I'm a complete fanboy- total nerd crush. That said, if I did meet her I would be curious about her academic work as it relates to mine even if it is something of a tenuous link.

MarsAudiac  said about 2 months ago:

Nah, totally get what you're saying. I guess because I'm in a similar field I see it differently. They don't give out maths degrees for being able to add up fast, is what I'm getting at. Did you ever have to do kumon maths? Haha. I'm not directing my comments at anyone here, either - I was just a bit blerghed out by some of the stuff on the fanpage. It's pretty grotty in there.

MarsAudiac  said about 2 months ago:

I need to get off my unrealistic, idealistic high horse too!

tugboat  said about 2 months ago:

:-D

Tramdriver  said about 2 months ago:

Can I ask what field are you in? I understand they don't give out degree for adding up fast- I guess only mathematicians would be on the show. But I imagine adding like she does is almost like breathing for her. Not surprised about the fanpage- check youtube as well. As for Kumon maths I tutored it for 5 years. :-/

Tramdriver  said about 2 months ago:

MarsAudiac: I need to get off my unrealistic, idealistic high horse too!

Ha- yeah maybe have a beer and relax! :-P I guess a lot of us get like that from time to time. It is after all just a TV show. As the advantages people get for being attractive ... well...

At any rate I want to go to a taping to see what it is really like making the show.

this has just made my brain explode. what a blast from the past.

Tramdriver  said about 1 month ago:

I think I might be in with a chance with Lily - she mentioned tonight that she was dressed as a turtle and wandered lost outside a building dressed as a turtle at an undersea party - I crawled around with one of those shell kids pools on my back pretending to be a turtle while geeked off my head (I also have a kraken fixation). She likes dancing, I'm a No Lights No Lycra regular. She's a mathwhiz and... I'm not. I'm a humanities guy- hopefully opposites attract on that score. Err... I'll keep you all posted.

LoadMyRig  said about 1 month ago:

i haven't been this excited since shehunter hunting.

Tramdriver  said about 1 month ago:

May the best man win..............

Tramdriver  said 22 days ago:

I'm not sure how new it is, but Lilly has an official Farcebook page here. In what is surely the most unsurprising news all year there are scores of men declaring their love for her.
