Donnie Sutherland vs. MES on Sounds in 1982 (with Mark Riley)
Live to air from 3RRR in 1982
Wasn't Melbourne where the two Marks had the big late-night run in?
Mark Riley has a joker hysterical face-uh.
I couldn't bear to watch that Sounds appearance then - for some reason it's twice as difficult now.
I can't believe the Fall are actually coming to Australia, I hope I live to see them.
I think the stoush between the Marks might have been in Kings Cross
Yeah imagine if you died the week before the tour. That would suck.
!!!!!!!!
I am going to have an all day listening party today to celebrate.
Can't wait to see The Fall again. I don't care what they play these days, I just want to see Mark E Smith do his thing.
For nostalgia's sake, this was the setlist from the first Old Greek Theatre show in Melb in 1990:
Zagreb
And Therein
Carry Bag Man
Sing! Harpy
I'm Frank
Telephone Thing
Wrong Place, Right Time
Bill Is Dead
Hit the North
Deadbeat Descendant
Black Monk Theme
Big New Prinz
British People in Hot Weather
Bremen Nacht
Jerusalem
Mr. Pharmacist
White Lightning
I've got a tape I recorded off RRR from that tour. And from memory the Bats were playing too.
Tactics supported, I remember that.
I would prefer to hear the Fall c.2010 do almost anything off their last few records than almost any of the songs from that list. Too many covers in there for one thing. I saw them in 1990 with Def FX at one show, and at the Livid festival where that awful late-period Tactics (where D Studdert had decided the sound of late-period Talking Heads was the road to pop stardom, thank god the records weren't as bad as the live shows) also played and Redhead Kingpin didn't.
lord I can hardly remember a thing from that gig, nor from Butthole Surfers the night before.
are they actually touring or was HEB just being mischevious on his birthday?

The original Livid at Hardold Park Raceway, fowltonmeans. I was there, too. There Melbourne show on that tour, at the Old Greek Theatre, blew my young mind away.
Yes sister. For Meredith.

yeah slapping people is cool if you're mark e. smith
I'd probably slap him as well.
Heh heh. Slapped by MES - that's rock'n'roll kudos right there. Something to tell the grandkids about.
how he manages to sing in a band & be boss of an EPL team is beyond me
Allowing for a bit of tongue-in-cheekness, I'm amazed by what a free pass MES is getting off you lot. If Ed Kowalczyk from Live acted like that then everyone would have massively bunched panties about this.
Also performance-wise. It's like everyone is queuing up to have a mediocre experience and then claim it as ''classic MES!!!!'' - is it alienating if it is totally predictable and safe? Or is it just bad art resting on laurels? It feels like indie dudes are going to see the Fall with exactly the same attitude that baby boomers go to see the Rolling Stones - ie to have their expectations met.
DISCUSS THIS ON THE INTERNET PLEASE!
I've seen the Stones and The Fall live in recent years.
Both kicked ass
me and Mrs Ben last night started reading THE FALLen...
...and yeah, their Meredith set was awesome
Melbourne show.

Feat. Hyperfuzz on vox for a good 30 seconds or so late into ''Reformation''
It's going to be difficult for the band to surprise and amaze people who know the band so well already. I was surprised and amazed when I first got into the band years ago.
Their new stuff is great, the last album is the best they've done in 20 years for mine. The band is tight and well rehearsed. Mark had energy and bite about him. I was glad to see a band almost as fresh and relevant today as they were 30 years ago. The Fall have never been a nostalgia act.
My expectations were met, but they were extremely high to begin with.
Hey, I saw them in 1990 and they were pretty underwhelming. It was a great disappointment because I'd only just missed out on the 1982 tour because I thought I was still grounded.
I haven't listened to any new music for years and years so my expectations for 2010 were pretty low.
And they were exceeded by Friday night's gig. It was brilliant. I was on the couch for most of it and couldn't see a thing so I wasn't being entertained by MES's amp twiddling or Eleni's handbag antics. The band was great and my feet were tapping constantly - I would have been up dancing if I had the energy.
I asked the pregnant woman next to me if her baby was enjoying the Fall and she said it was pretty excited.
Even the unborn had a good time.
Yet another person who can't sing this

I've been thinking about this past few days, too. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show, but if it wasn't MES out front, would I have? If it was some other bumbling homelss-looking guy? In some ways, these expectations are inextricably bound up with seeing a band like The Fall. I wish he would've left their amps alone, I think they would've sounded a lot better, his antics in this dept got old pretty quick for me; mess around all you like, just as long as it sounds good. 'Bury', for example, I wanted to have crashing over-distorted guitar like part 1 on the CD, but the guitar was way too low from MES' fiddling. But if the gig was like that, maybe it wouldn't have been 'classic Fall' and everyone would've been disappointed?
At Meredith when he was fiddling with the guitar amp, he was fiddling with the wrong channel, thus not doing anything to it. Lulz.
I guess you don't go through 40+ band members by treating them with respect onstage .. even his wife kept her head down, looking straight ahead when he was doing all that. I know it's his schtick, but really, there were times I wanted to hear what the guitarist was doing, but he'd been cranked down.
I wonder if MES gets them to sign a ''keep calm and carry on, even if I'm being a complete turd'' clause when they join the band?
the fantastic cranking amps has the fall tour sorted:
I hope those poodles are having a protein christmas
The Fall live @ Meredith
