Hey, I've been asked to write something round this topic by an American site, and I really don't want to be missing anyone out.
All suggestions gratefully received.
I'm reasonably up on this music or I wouldn't have volunteered to write about it in the first place - but it's always great to be tipped off to something I ain't encountered before while I'm doing my research.
All eras

ain't?
Jerry, what's your definition of a garage band? Starts in the garage or stays in the garage?
Easybeats, Venom P Stinger, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Matrimony. The Birds. Radio Birdman. You Am I. I'm aware that this makes the definition as fluid as the person wielding it but I guess I'm talking a certain attitude and use of guitars.
Missing Links. They weren't in a garage though, they practised above a shop in Epping in Sydney. Matrimony were more of a warehouse band. Who are The Birds? Guess I'll have to read your article.
ask dave, http://www.rocksbackpages.com/writer.html?WriterID=laing_d_au
I was thinking about the Easybeats and while I am a major fan of them, except 'Good Times' which is the worst crock of shit ever and was even before Hutchence-Barnes tackled it, I think they're as much a garage band as the Lemon Pipers or, well, Supertramp. They were always totally focused on the charts - mainstream success, is what I mean, and achieved it pretty quickly. They would not have seen the point in playing in the garage for the sake of it.
Now their contemporaries, like The Throb - like the Missing Links - whole different story.
Craven Fops were a garage band I would say.
It's a bit broad, Jerry. We'll be here forever.
Take a dose of the Australian Ugly Things vinyl compilations. Maybe both editions of the Murder Punk bootleg series or the Where Birdmen Flew LP. All should be apparent then.
purple hearts?
comps recommendations gratefully received. I'd imagine I have most, but you never know...
and yes, Purple Hearts
Wild Cherries
Once again, a successful chart act, at times. Possibly counter to 'garageness'?
three recommended comps if you don't have them:
- it's a kave-in! (kustom65)
- peculiar hole in the sky (big beat)
- hot generation (big beat)
damn, that Ugly Things collection is fine.
Asteroid B612
Hy Test
The Specimens
The Devilrock 4
some of my favourites, dunno how they fit the definition but hey the hellacopters covered an asteroids song - whihc solidifies the garage rock credentials in my opinion
actually Jerry - just ask Barman - he's the expert
cheers. not sure I'll be classifying punk as garage as it blows the field wide open but there again... why shouldn't it? it seems that the connection is far clearer in Australia than other countries.
not the augie march singer - his is a skating rink band

what about glampunkgaragerock? lol just kidding
yeh the lines between garage and punk are very very blurred - but haven't they always really - mc5 to stooges to pistols? etc
what about skatingrinkrollerderby? that line is also blurry
(i am not contributing, i will logoff)
it's a conversation for another day, but actually there's an entire strain of UK punk that didn't seem to have anything to do with 60s garage rock at all... whereas the Australian punks (Radio Birdman, Saints et al) seemed to be a direct continuation
The Black Diamonds outta lithgow, claimed they had enough material to play for two days straight but only released a couple of singles, crazy good though

Sorry, didn't realise you had such a low opinion of your own opinions.
Or of (for example) Tim Pittman's opinion. Maybe you know of a better expert on Australian garage rock, though?
Uh-oh.
Lime Spiders - for being EVEN WORSE than the Fuzztones
not too fussed on Pitman..........
but my heroes are
Dave Laing of Grown up wrong and Dog Meats records who compiled Do The Pop etc.
and Richard Stanley (RIGID) bass player for MOTO , ONYAS, OOGA BOOGAS and a hundred other fuck ups .. also label boss of Dropkick records and another 1000 collector nerd activities.
Jules Normington is another name that comes to mind
this is hilarious
Not a fan of Pittman's opinion when he says there's one ''killer'' Lipstick Killers single. There are two (three if you count that other live thing).
C'mon, Hindu Gods is easily the best thing they did. The other two are almost accidental recordings.
apart from this thread and an email from tim pittman, there didn't seem to be much else going on by the way of research for that article.
I think Jerry's approach was as good as any (actually, better than many). It's a pretty amorphous term. The article directed traffic to other sites etc that let readers get their own ideas.
I disagree. Sockman is better than Hindu Gods.
I do have a soft spot for Prince Randian and the art of rolling a cigarette with your mouth. The live single is one of my fave artefacts but Hindu Gods is Godhead.
Are Legends Of Motorsport still around? They always delivered that 60's garage sound with fuzz-a-plenty.
This looks pretty still around, Tiger:

The band I'm in, Wolfy & The Bat Cubs are an Australian garage band and we focus on sounds from the 1960s.
This Saturday night The Penny Black are having us and The Bowers so if you feel like having a dance come down.
Listen to us at http://myspace.com/WolfyAndTheBatCubs
and if you haven't already check out The Bowers http://www.myspace.com/thebowersmusic
Blood Fart
The Z-Rays from Brissie were my fav Aussie garage act. But they've been on hiatus for ages. The Sulphur Lights are pretty cool, Digger and the Pussycats.
Digger and The Pussycats playing tomorrow night (Sat) at the Tote, Eucalyptus. You know what to do!
