I like the lyrics.
I wasn't so keen on Deviltown Blues - too predictable, everything else was pretty impressive. The vocals, I'm not entirely convinced about, they are too self effacing and comical, but then again you don't want to go ultra serious either. Your music is worthy of more followers.
Thank you, defiantly take that into advice. We're simply recording at home. Very basic stuff... But we're really trying to figure out what to put on the demo and what to leave out just for live stuff.
The honest opinions should be the band name
No one ever really appreciates honest opinions unless its what they want to hear.
Technically, i can appreciate any advice that is given to us at the moment
My honest opinion?
It's music that sounds like what people like to think country music sounds like, but is actually music that sounds like what people like to think that country music sounds like.
did you really shoot a man and run forever more? i don't like it when bands sing cliched lyrics and adopt worn out personas. it's better when they try to break stereotype rather than try to conform to it. please take this adice on board defiantly.
I don't think he did, but he was telling a story. I guess it wasn't worn out to me.
I thought it was more blues than country. Could be wrong.
i don't know about all that. all i know is bands should only ever sing literally and truthfully about their own experiences. or make fart jokes.
i don;'t know what to say except i give a damn
Cool, thanks for all the advice guys. Yeah, you can either be a story teller of ficticious stories or real stories. We chose to do both. Deviltown Blues is about me. Under the Sun and Of Steeds and Thieves are not. It's just a matter of personal preference. That's all I'm saying in my defense. Um yeah, and I thought it was more blues as well Jazzy. But I hate labelling styles. So. Yeah. Thanks again for the advice.
I like the repetition of 'Under The Sun'. The combination of acoustic and distorted electric guitars works for me. It kinda reminds me of Moe Grizzly and maybe Little John, if they were, well, dirtier. 'Of Steeds And Thieves' has a bit of a Graveyard Train feel to it, with some Morricone low harmonies. Again, I dig the repetition. I like 'Deviltown Blues' the best, because it fucks with the genre. Admittedly it's a genre that I personally don't get into that much - I've never understood why Australians love that Deep South Americana so much. It's entertaining, but I'd rather hear bands creating something of their own. That's why I like 'Deviltown' - it takes an experimental approach to that hillbilly sound. I'd like to hear more of that kind of stuff and less of the storytelling.
For the life of me, neither do I. I am one of them, though.
Ha. I understand, noneabove. I can't help myself enjoying a band like Graveyard Train for example. I think it works best when it's done irreverently, with tongue in cheek, as is obviously the case the Dirty Columns.

Thanks a bunch man. Appreciate everyone's comments.
For anyone who is interested.
We're launching our demo (with the same tracks, just newer recordings) on the 1st of October at the Brunswick Hotel, free entry
We're also playing this Thursday at the Birmingham Hotel at about quater to 8.
Both these shows are free with steller lineups
So come down if you care.
Should have said 'appreciate everyone's honest opinions'.
frankie teardrop - if little john were dirty? You should get along to one of our all too infrequent rehearsals; dick jokes aplenty.
