this is for a friend of mine, she's headed down there and i've forgotten half the places to go.

go to the Lost and Found Market on Smith St to buy over price ''VINTAGE'' chocolate tins, record players, and airline bags (amongst other things)

k2  said about 1 year ago:

There is a dodgy chinese shop on Victoria street near the vic market that will sell you dodgy fireworks under the counter. Just whisper ''cracker'' when no-one else is in the shop.

go to footscray and get some ''chop-chop''

k2  said about 1 year ago:

The magic shop on Elizabeth street sells fake blood and these pellets you light on fire and they grow like worms.

Also on the roof of Myer, there is a carnival with rides and fairy floss and popcorn.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

Seriously?!

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

That's been closed for years.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

When I was a kid yeah. My parents would take us there every year. We always parked at the Myer carpark and were made to go across the road to the church on the corner and light a candle for my grandmother (who had passed away), before heading up to the 6th floor of Myer. here my parents would observe which toys we liked so they would know what to buy us for xmas. After that we'd get some lunch at the Myer cafe and then head up to the rooftop carnival for rides, fairyfloss, popcorn and a picture with Santa.

This happened every year.

k2 my nana use to take me to the myer toy department, visit santa and rooftop carnival thing always followed with lunch at the myer cafeteria every year just shy of xmas too. i'd always have hot chips and a chocolate big m from the cafeteria.
i'd love to see old photos of that rooftop thing in full swing 'cos i'm sure it was pretty crappy but as a kid seemed awesome. i recall the walk through the department store to see santa had some shiny gold hallway massive ribbon trail thing to follow through al the floors? does that ring a bell?

Yeah it was in some weird back area past the bedding department or something? There was like red carpet or yeah ribbons.. sounds familiar. My mum will be able to remember - lemme call her.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

My mum says Santa was only ever on the 5th floor and there used to be a carpet to follow, then you'd get to a door and wait. Apparently there were more than one Santa but kids never knew cause you waited outside and then walked down a corridor to the next available Santa when it was your turn.

DaisyB  said about 1 year ago:

i just googled myer rooftop carnival looking for more info and this thread comes up as the fourth result.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

I might go exploring the 5th floor of Myer next time I'm there.

sister  said about 1 year ago:

oh god, i've never heard of this rooftop carnival. Am I too old? or was it a secret from me. My parents refused to stump up for pics with santa.

MissAustralia2003  said about 1 year ago:

go to david jones where you can 'try before you buy'!

k2  said about 1 year ago:

Sister - how old are you and have you always kived in melb? I reckon it was still there 15 years ago.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

kived/lived.

sister  said about 1 year ago:

i'm ancient and have always kived in melbourne - apart from a couple of years outside of sydney in 69-71.

I'm sure I would have taken my daughter to a rooftop carnival. How could I not know of this thing?

I'm going to have a look at the Gorman outlet on Bridge Rd for some some long sleeved t-shirts.
I love going to High/Glenferrie St in Malvern/Armadale for a trip down memory lane. Parts of it are like an ossified Melbourne from the 1970s.
If your friend has enough money for designer clothes then DJs is offloading them for half-price.
There are beautiful expensive things in Christines on Flinders Lane - lovely to look at even if you can't afford them.
The Nicholas Building on the corner of Flinders Lane and Swanston St has lots of interesting shops - Retrostar for vintage clothes, Collected Works poetry bookshop, art galleries, button shops etc.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

Third floor of magnation on Elizabeth st has loads of design books if you're into that kind of thing. The permanent exhibition at acmi is also cool if you like new media, film, tv and games

^ although I didn't search too hard, this was the only image I could find of the rooftop.

k2  said about 1 year ago:

peaches, it was an amazing wonderland of childhood awesome.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

Yes, one of my favourite places in melbourne as a child.

Rooftops in general are still incredibly underutilised!!! Look at that space!!!!!

k2  said about 1 year ago:

If I am permitted to get a little Fashionhaley for a moment.. in Tokyo, most rooftops of department stores are beer gardens. YES BEER GARDENS. Imagine that picture above as a beer garden.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

I imagine that every time I see a vacant rooftop. :(

Yeh, I didn't know that! Can I get a lift?

Lilo  said about 1 year ago:

climbs in boot

JudyDickslap  said about 1 year ago:

Whenever I've been in there they've not had all that much worth purchasing. It's mainly clearance shit that they can't get rid of. Or at least that's what it seems like.

I want one of their duffel coats.
