so maybe this thread has already been done on here i dunno - the guy's a name i've read on the internet for ages, him and the word "genius" often being mentioned in the same sentence, but those sentences also often included the words "disco" and "jazz" so i never really paid much mind
but i randomly downloaded a song the other day and it's totally blown my mind ("keeping up" being the song). it's a beautiful, mellow, drifting soft breeze of a song. totally lovely in sentiment and delivery
anyone know much of his stuff? if so fill me in. what's good, where to start, etc.. there's a lot about him out there but it's all a bit much. i need the abridged version
kettles?
you should check him out angelic layer. might suit your vibe... the song i've heard is very "chilllled" and rambling hahah
wtf i just looked up russell hobbs on google and it's already in the cache about 10 times
i only just reset all that data. someone must've used my computer to search for it on the weekend?!?! so WEIRD
was it YOU angelic layer???
someone searched for russel hobbs kettle, russell hobbs breadmaker, russel hobbs uk, russell hobbs spares, russel hobbs coffee maker... etc. i don't understand. mmmaybe this is some new feature in firefox
so... arthur russell. yeah?
nobody wantsta talk about arthur russell on a monday afternoon
nup
He is one of many on my 'to check out' list.
The recent double disc, 'First thought, best thought' is considered pretty good and has been recommended to me by a few people. I like the little bits up on teh boomkat site first thought
"This music is an utterly joyful, semi-freeform exploration of avant-pop and americana, decades before such terms would catch on."
Genius. Essential tracks:
Dinosaur - Kiss Me Again Loose Joints - Is It All Over My Face? (male version) Loose Joints - Is It All Over My Face? (female version) Felix - Tiger Stripes Loose Joints - Pop Your Funk Arthur Russell - Let's Go Swimming Arthur Russell - Treehouse/Schoolbell Dinosaur L - Go Bang

thanks for the link runoutgroove. he's just risen up my list of people to check out too... just noticed that a couple of his records are on sale at boomkat at the moment (whether or not in works out any cheaper by the time it makes it to australia is another matter, i guess)

ARTHUR RUSSELL MOVIE
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
whos, that's a rough face
great, that RRR special is still there, never noticed this thread. thanks shunt.
i was listening to world of echo the other day.
just watched the teaser. looks magnificient. so hyped to see it already!! but it probably won't make it here until the 2009 film fest or some shit
jens lekman is in the preview if that's likely to lure anyone in to watch it. and is that one of the electrelane girls?
amazing.
anybody seen his records in melbs? metropolis maybe? i wanna stock up over the weekend
Yeah Metropolis usually has some in stock shunt.
cool, ta
I'm listening to the Soul Jazz compilation tonight. I'm just getting into his stuff.
apparently there's a biography coming out in 2008, as well as the movie
meanwhile i think i've now bought his entire discography and have become completely obsessed
a nice interpretation really
argh
go to stereogum and search arthur russell or jens lekman for the latter covering a little lost.
Little cover EP put together by Jens Lekman and Victoria Bergsman.
Features Jens, Victoria, Vera from Electrelane and Joel from The Hidden Cameras.

hrrrrrm...
ewww! that was horrible! why didn't he just go vomit on arthur's grave instead!?!!? jens fucken blekman
a little lost is the most gorgeous song.
jens played another russell cover when i saw him in berlin a few years ago.
I just discovered this guy through a track on a MOJO sampler of all places. The song Place I Know/Kid Like You is one of the most beguiling and beautiful songs I've ever heard, I absolutely love it. It's hard to believe that this kind of stuff was being made in 1986!
i'm totally hooked on 'the platform on the ocean' from calling out of context and i need more, but i have absolutely no idea where to look next.
another thought is probably the most gorgeous / haunting collection and the best starting point for that mode of arthur (ie. non-dancefloor)
the movies playing in melb next week + some sort of 3000 presented arthur russell disco party which i'm hoping isn't as awful as it could be. anyone know more about it?
did anyone go?
i've tried a bunch of his other stuff, but can't help coming back to calling out of context.
Hi anok. Have you got World of Echo?
yep. well, i downloaded it. where can a guy pick up mr russell's records in this town?
I picked up World of Echo at Polyester and I notice that Metropolis has quite a few titles. I must say I find Russell's work inspiring and frustrating in equal measure. Sometimes his songs are sublime, other times they're a shambles (sometimes both).
oh, totally. though i think it's his cheesiest (or perhaps heartfelt! haha) and obviously 80s stuff that really hits home with me. there's something awesomely smooth and accessible about his voice, and it's so often rambling along over these bizarre snaking grooves.
