I never really understood what a hessian was and/or what a hessian band was supposed to sound like. As opposed to other punk/hardcore bands hessians were more inclined to wear mesh hats, play at venues like squats, warehouses, art spaces and write left-wing songs.

As far as I can tell the term ''hessian'' was coined because for whatever reason some people
didn't think this kind of music/lifestyle was representative of ''proper'' hardcore. I don't think the hessians really aspired to be ''hardcore'' and never really claimed that they were, but the hessians still upset people like Michael Crafter. I always thought ''hessian'' derived from ''hesher'' (or vice versa), and therefore essentially meant metal and/or bogan. I'm old, though.
