Essential information for Sydney!

Talking at Sydney Opera House, 26 July 2010. I've already booked :)

outerspacextrapnel  said about 1 year ago:

I just saw him on the TV the other day, an old show of him in Jeeves and Wooster with Hugh Laurie.

It's funny showing the kids Blackadder, they all say ''That's House with an English accent! OMG That's so weird!! etc. etc.''

SWEET MOTHER OF FUCKING BREAKFAST CEREAL.

Thank you so much! I was totally unaware of this!

PondRepellent  said about 1 year ago:

raven, how did you book a ticket? It says that tickets are on sale to the general public from 2 June.

Do I need to register on the Opera House website to gain access to advance bookings?

As a kid I'd seen quite a few episodes of Blackadder w/ Laurie in them, but failed to make the connection between him and the guy from House, 101 Dalmations, Stuart Little, etc.

I'd even known of Fry & Laurie (though hadn't seen any of it)...

My mind was literally blown when I realised a couple of years ago.

PondRepellent  said about 1 year ago:

Well, perhaps not literally.

yeah Hugh Laurie - makes you realize how cool he is - whenever I watch house I can't help thinking of blackadder and how silly that character is compared - Stephen Fry - gotta see that - it'd be refreshingly funny

I recently watched the audio commentaries on the new Blackadder box set and was surprised at how Rowan Atkinson makes a few jokes about Hugh Laurie and his success... For example, when Prince George is seen waking in the morning, Atkinson jokes, ''Dr House awakes.''

Laurie doesn't appear in the commentary at all, of course... All the other main actors do, but not him. His special features interview was shithouse as well.

many appo-logies for the incon-ween-ience

blackadder was one of the best of all time. pisses me off no end that the last thing rowan atkinson did was another Bean movie. Johnny English was pretty shit but at least he got to use his excellent delivery.

have youse seen the young one's episode where they go on university challenge? the team they go up against is Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Ben Elton. pretty talented bunch. it's on the youtubes somewhere.

i recently finished his memoir ''Moab is my Washpot''. a very engaging writer

We are on the Opera House mailing list, so... pre-sales.

BACK OFF, SON. THIS ONE'S MINE.

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

i thought it was pretty much all sold out, pre sale or no pre sale.

I'm so sad now...

PondRepellent  said about 1 year ago:

Okay, you guys can stop worrying now-- there are still tickets and they will go on sale this Wednesday.

raven  said about 1 year ago:

I think anonymous was yanking your chain. Pre-sales just have a certain allocation of tix, so that the hoi polloi can still have their turn.

SallySimpson  said about 1 year ago:

Why are people being asked to get a sense of humour transplant with this?

He made fucking misogynistic comments and now he's hiding behind ''waaaah, I was misquoted'' on the same topic that he's been misquoted a few times before?

noneabove  said about 1 year ago:

What I'm stunned by is not by his Jeremy Clarkson moment (you know, how different are these men, really?) but that Germaine Greer said this:

Well, if he thinks that women are not interested in genital encounters with total strangers then he is absolutely right.

Germaine Greer, of all people, not only dictating what women are interested in as a whole, but that women as a whole are infinitely depressed by the idea of getting fondled at a toilet block?

What has this world come to?

hungryhungryhippo  said about 1 year ago:

What exactly was his misogynistic comment Sally Simpson?

Tim_Marben  said about 1 year ago:

I can literally hear the tendons popping as knees jerk from MY FUCKING HEMISPHERE.

What has the whole experience taught us?
1. That people with 'right on' political viewpoints (in this case, feminists) can be just as reactionary as anyone else.
2. That the tabloid press, like, misquote things?
3. Shock horror - phrases sometimes lose their context when placed on a sheet of paper.

In steadfast defense of Mr. Fry,

Tim

Jazzy  said about 1 year ago:

I tend to agree with Tim, and I think Germaine ended up actually summarising some of the points Fry was actually making but in a different way. I don't think he had much conviction behind what he was saying, it was more of a genuine question.

tigers  said about 1 year ago:

If you read his reply to the situation, you'll see he wasn't really trying to make any point at all.
what a ridiculously blown out of proportion shitstorm.

exackerly.

Not really surprising though is it really.

montyclift  said about 1 year ago:

much as i adore the old poove, it was a bad joke, poorly told.

and germaine hasnt worked out that they now shove a microphone at her, because they're she's bound to say hysterically absurd. don't know what to do to make her realise every time she opens her trap she diminishes her legacy that little bit more.

raven  said about 1 year ago:

Yes. But that's all it was. Nevertheless, what he needs to realise is that whether ''blown out of proportion'' or not, everything he says, ever, will be analysed and taken utterly seriously, and he's got to think a little bit. Sometimes.
Still, I have sympathy for him, even though his blog about it was overlong and still not quite to-the-point.

Morris Iemma  said about 1 year ago:

Recently on an episode of QI he insisted that dog's were born to eat meat and they wouldn't eat vegetables without meat included.

Dumb cunz.

Morris Iemma  said about 1 year ago:

Good point. (I mean that sincerely.)

basil seal  said about 1 year ago:

His newish bio is pretty good, although he's pretty bloody successful during his twenties and as a consequence the plot's pretty linear.

It's full of excellent YouTube searches, though. 7.232/10.

timewaster said about 5 months ago: Yes, what is so damn brilliant about Stephen Fry?
He talks in a posh accent. He's a gay intellectual. He's been in a few films. He's obviously well connected with the old guard of British comedy. Big deal. But what great writing has Fry actually done to deserve a packed opera house fawning over his every word?

Why should people read your book or see your band?

PondRepellent  said about 11 months ago:

Not sure why I was so enthusiastic about Stephen Fry only 9 months ago. Seems to have worn off.

Morris Iemma  said about 7 months ago:

Has anyone notice how Stephen Fry tries to be cool all the time?

k2  said about 3 months ago:

Any sightings in melbourne? I'd like to get a photo with the man.
