Sleigh Bells

happycow  said about 2 years ago  or at  9:31AM on Thursday, April 29 2010 in music news

This pitchfork hyped band is actually pretty good.

Myspace page Check out ''Crown on the Ground''

Featuring a dude from Poison The Well on guitar/sounds and a chick who used to be in a teenybopper group on vocals. Debut album out early May on M.I.A.'s label.

new track here

happycow  said about 2 years ago:

Not a lot of love for Sleigh Bells here then.

Raw, exciting new music or over rated hipster band of the minute?

I really dig the into the red over driven sound.

eucrid_eucrow  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, they're pretty good, very good in parts - always good for the dancefloor.

Here's a brand new track from them.

tihstar  said about 2 years ago:

I like em. A lot. Fun party music. Makes me feel old and uncool though.

goldbuttons  said about 2 years ago:

Awesome! Am probably going to see them on Sunday.

tihstar  said about 2 years ago:

Album has leaked.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah, they're cool.

Atari Teenage Riot meets Crystal Castles. They won't crossover like MIA, the sound is too brutal.

happycow  said about 2 years ago:

Can someone put it on th gmail so I can listen to it at work today?

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

the crystal castles of 2010

happycow  said about 2 years ago:

Been listening to the album today, somehow sounds louder an more brutal than the demos. Was afraid it may have been toned down in production. Cheers whoever put it on the gmail

timscottt  said about 2 years ago:

dude used to play in a really shit hardcore band.

whatwhat  said about 2 years ago:

now he plays in a really shit noisecore band!

bungle  said about 2 years ago:

yeah poison the well really fucking suck

tangentially related to american nightmare though, so not all bad

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

thanks cap'n... worked a Treat(s).

see what i did there?

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

Cheers. I think you can buy up to 4 tix on a code. Im actually gonna leave it til next pay after seeing the price. $50 per ticket on ticketek + one of these:

Registered Mail (Add $11.85)
Allow 14 working days for delivery.

Venue / City Box Office Collection (Add $9.85)

Ticket outlets are becoming worse than the fucking banks.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

yeah, it's a ridiculous scam.

i wish artists (or their management) had more say in this.

$50 is too high for a new band with one album (especially adding the postage/pickup fees).

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah, with tickets to Swans and Future of the Left to buy in the next couple of weeks, plus possibly Laneway (if not then a fewf sideshows), $60 for Sleigh Bells, as much as I like their boom crashing overdrive thing, does seem exceedingly steep.

funtimes  said about 1 year ago:

All the ingredients of this band sound terrible and I wanna hate them, but damn they write some catchy songs.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

going tomorrow night.

should be fun times.

i presume.

tigers  said about 1 year ago:

If anyone wants a ticket, PM me.
not sure if it's sold out or not.
make an offer, i'll pass it on to my friend selling the ticket...

team ham sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

I'll give you $30 for it.

tigers  said about 1 year ago:

Ticket still up for grabs! Make me an offer!
THS can't make it anymore...

whatwhat  said about 1 year ago:

Playing a 30 min set I heard.

Tim_Marben  said about 1 year ago:

Wouldn't want more than that surely? They come on, bring the rock, make it intense then piss off without getting boring.

Evilio  said about 1 year ago:

Was a pretty good set, albeit a touch on the short side (I don't think a couple of covers for an encore would have hurt to keep the crowd happy). Was a little disappointed that Rill Rill came down to simply a backing track with live vocals - an extra overdriven guitar line would have done wonders, and the single note played at the end of the song seems to confirm this. But, despite these gripes, it really was a great show. Who would have thought pop could be hardcore?

team ham sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

My girlfriend went and all she had to say was it was 30 minutes made up of 50% strobe light, 45% backing track, 3% miming/pretending to play guitar, and 2% singing.

poprocks96  said about 1 year ago:

Sounds like it was really amazing, THS.

sonian  said about 1 year ago:

It was completely super completely ultimately and entirely fantastic! I loved it. Even through the bruises I'm sporting today. Without a doubt, that was the most fun I've had at a gig in AGES.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

Would love to see them again with another album behind them, and would also appreciate some live backing (akin to LCD soundsystem live). That said, it's basically a bedroom project and with financial constraints would be tough to authentically replicate live.

I did particularly like the final note-burst where the amps were cranked. Should have been that loud the whole time.

Not anymore. At $55 a ticket these guys will be loaded pretty quickly! Punters paid $1.50 a minute last night for that gig!

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

yeah, i think next tour something more should be expected.

haven't seen them at a festival, but they would suit that scene down to the ground. venue gigs just yet is pushing it.

ghoti-max  said about 1 year ago:

Awful fucking set at Sunset Sounds. Spent the whole time staring in disbelief.

JonBonJovial  said about 1 year ago:

Can anyone who was near the mixing desk tell me how much of the vocals were live, and how much ''assistance'' Alexis had from the backing track? Field Day show started out pretty dodgy vocally, and then suddenly the vocals were spot on and much more bedded into the track (ie they turned up the vocals on the backing track). Other than that, pretty cool to watch.

CaptainHowdy  said about 1 year ago:

a+++, would see again. i didn't realise how short the set was until alexis apologised for it being so short. the sound wasn't perfect but the band were dynamic enough to put on a great show.

astrousersasmind  said about 1 year ago:

Loving that math Hammers.

asbestos  said about 1 year ago:

Didn't care about the shortness of the gig. Too many gigs go for far too long and encores usually suck anyway. Amazing night.

stevereich  said about 1 year ago:

Pretty average. Sick of Brooklyn wank

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

I was practically standing on the mixing desk (great spot to rest your drink). Alexis was constantly asking for the vocals to go up. Board was preset, and it seemed mixer was reticent to change it much. Derek took charge a couple of times and played with the amps, but both seemed locked into either his guitar or the backing tape. Alexis had a small unit she played with, but didn't make much impact.

Overall, I would say she happily relied on backing tape, but when that wasn't an option, the sound wasn't right for her to over-rule enough.

Please correct me anyone who knows better.

Baz!  said about 1 year ago:

Thought I was going to really like this band but couldn't make it through 2nd listen. I reckon their 3rd album might be pretty good.
.
And the radio processing/limiter with slow release thing was a bad production idea.
