Wow, this is closest i've ever seen the CBD to a police state. Flinders end of Russel most side streets and buildings locked off for CHOGM. Packs of police on every corner, Collins 101 locked off from public and swarms of suits getting security checks to enter. Concrete barries, pylons and fences locking off entire blocks. Axis of Evil riot crew meandering through the beurocratic rufuse. Tense!

it's pretty crazy huh. there were choppers everywhere this morning flying overhead.
rarg
Fucking word - the filth just got given selmi-automatic glocks the other day as well!!
Hate them :(((
yeah felt like that bigtime walking through the city this morning - the barricades and the choppers and heaps of cops walking around with the big batons and the leather gloves on.
When the leather gloves are on you know they're not fucking around
i was there a couple of hours ago and it wasn't tense at all.
no demonstrators to speak of, just lots of cops hanging around looking silly.
everyone was smiling and seemed to think it was a big overreaction.
heh, someone should go up with a friend and a camera and just take a picture of one person standing there, shaking their fist flamboyantly at the fortress.
I saw all the choppers flying overhead this morning.
Seems a bit dramatic.
meh. i just walked outside and saw:
but last night there was a possy of about 50 cops crossing the road with batons. and someone apparently saw snipers on top of the building opposite this morning.
seriously, no drama at all.
about 100 falun gong doing their exercises at the city square was the biggest demos.
My favourite bit is the really strapping hunky secret service guys pretending to be businessmen waiting for friends on city corners, just idly looking at their blackberries or scouting the horizon for their ''mate.''
i'm worried about people i know going to this tomorrow. i have a nasty feeling it's going to end up like the one at crown.
i mean, snipers? what are they anticipating happening? someone's gonna chuck a cream pie? it's not the gaza strip people!
I think you might find that the reason that there's no protestors is due to the overwhelming police presence.
They're being prepared for anything, which in one sense isn't a bad idea considering that you've got all these world leaders together, a real prime terrorist target.
On the other hand, there is a very legitamate reason to protest against these cunts, which won't happen because the left has all the backbone of a crustacean these days.
there are no protesters, because all of the rotesting is expected to be tomorrow.
they are expecting 50,000 protesters.
badalex goes to university
i don't think the police presence has put anyone off. It's more of an indication that there is no seriously organised political group operating at the moment.
s11, in 2000 on the other hand, was a highly organised and mobilised affair that started campaigning for bodies months in advance of the event.
I have no problem with them being prepared for either terrorist attack or mad protesting.
snipers... haha. what a pack of freaked out pussies.
ha. you said rotesting.
considering uni exams etc are over, I'm surprised that no-one is there today.
there were hari krishnas at flinders street station. they were singing.
i wonder if there will be mad SA kids with balaclavas shouting 'mobilise! move! the chopper cannot land!' like there was at S11.
there were hari krishnas at flinders street station. they were singing.
what, and the police let them do this!!??!?? THE TERRORISTS HAVE WON!!!

I was going to start a thread on police but this will do.
I was reminded about how cops love to power trip themselves after seeing an officer be a standover cunt to a teenage nerd skater who was clearly not any trouble. What was the point? We know damn well that you are the law officer, so why flex your powers that little bit more and scare the living shit out of kids? You think they will respect you more?
Anyone got any police brutality stories? No, underbelly does not count.
That was briefly in the news actually.

I love it how some people generalise from a sample of n=1
Generalization on my part or the cop?
Because generally speaking, police love to show a bit of courtesy and respect to all walks of life. Having said that, they are not all cookies and cream.
I walked past that and wonded what the heck was going on...now I know - hoo ray.
Thanks for that correction Tangz
cheese it, einstein
i know they're supposed to be ''blitzing'' the roads at the moment, but i haven't been breatho'd in four years, and have only ever been tested twice... hmm...
I got tested twice in the same night a couple of months a go. Just driving from carlton to northcote...
And yes. I passed.
So, I tried to go out in the city last night. POLICE FUCKING EVERYWHERE. Carlton club wasn't letting any one in and cops were just standing there watching the queue. I assumed this meant they had too many people in there and couldn't let anyone else in because the cops were watching them. But they were still letting some people in. I tried to talk to the cops and the bouncer and got: YOU TELLING ME HOW TO DO MY JOB???? FUCK OFF!!! I'M TRYING TO TALK HERE!!! from the bouncer.
And the cops just looked at me with junkie stares. Its fucked. I'm never going out in the city again. Then we'll all be happy.
I've seen 4 cops hassling a busker because they he didn't have a license, they hassled me when I walking onto the road to see if a tram was coming, They hassle taxi drivers for not parking in the right area. WHO CARES. Its fucked.
Taxi Drivers should be hassled for parking in the wrong area. They make the road dangerous. In my area they park in a street forcing 2 way traffic onto the one side of the road, just near a corner. Fuck em.
agreed. but at 3am? there is no traffic
they also always park in the bus lane
Maybe some flexibility should be given, but bending the rules for different times of the day would cause an unbelievable amount of confusion and also encourage flouting of the time restrictions. Unmanageable.
Taxi drivers need to be reminded that road rules apply to them whenever possible.
All they need to do in the city is open heaps more smaller cafes and bars and close heaps of the big ones CQ, Crown etc.
And provide some entertainment.
Its easy.
you should run for mayor.
I'd vote for you based on those policies.
Last night walked up to Marios for dessert with 3 young nieces and brunswick st from johnson to the next block up (outside bar open) was blocked off by cops, rapid response van, police dogs, paddy wagon, about 4 cop cars, police in bullet proof jackets. Then they pulled a man out of somewhere, cuffed him and put him in the paddy wagon. They stayed around and it appears someone else escaped. Then they all packed up and sped off. A few minutes later it was as if nothing had happened.
Right after we saw the man go into the paddy wagon my 5 year old niece walked up to a cop who was in dark bullet proof gear with a gun and asked him if the bad man has gone. He looked pumped, ready to fight, but replied ‘no the bad man is still up there somewhere, don’t go up there’. I interceded thinking she’d get shoved in the paddy wagon for subordination and said ‘we’re just going to mario’s’. My niece then yelled at the cop “I’m not scared and I want cake” and the cop said OK and let us walk on.
I think the fuss might have been about this (?). one thing i've noticed recently is that the cops have been really swift, not mucking around, keep out of their way, and then minutes later it's as if noone was there.
