Super 8 & Polariod

PaulsGrandfather  said about 2 years ago  or at  5:19PM on Wednesday, June 28 2006.

There's Super 8 and Polaroid cameras for sale (cheap! cheap!) at my local op-shop. I was going to buy them but then I realised I have no idea where to buy film (assuming it's still available) and the cost asociated with it.

Anyone have any words of wisdom? Would it be worth it?

thegirlwhocrieddave  said about 2 years ago:

yeah, and see if you can buy out of date polaroid cartridges. the older the better. beautiful.

littlearch  said about 2 years ago:

buy them anyway, you can sort out the rest later

QUICK!

Lauren  said about 2 years ago:

i have a super 8 camera and am yet to use it. film does still exist for it, but all the associated costs are a bitch.

the film may seem reasonably priced, but remember the costs that will come after.

the polaroid camera should be fine. although, last time i worked in a photo shop, the packets of poloroids were about 30 bucks

saucyjack  said about 2 years ago:

i think they're both pretty pricey.

i'd just go for the super8. altho developing the film takes a while i think

or... get an actionsampler or sommink. fun to use, and only takes 35mm film

davethescot  said about 2 years ago:

You can buy super 8 film but i think you now have to send it O/S to get developed.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

if they're super cheap, jsut get them and hold onto them.

you can worry about the other costs when you have money.

PaulsGrandfather  said about 2 years ago:

I already have a polariod but it's shit and the photos aren't even shaped like the classic ones. I have noticed film is super expensive for that but I guess I'd be willing to put up with it. Just wanted to know if I'm still likely to find it.

As for Super 8, Lauren, what are the associated costs? Do you know?

davethescot  said about 2 years ago:

It used to be that the development of Super 8 film was included when you bought it, not sure if this is still the case, as for asociated costs with Super 8 I can't think of any. You should buy the camera, super 8 is great.

PaulsGrandfather  said about 2 years ago:

Hmmm... I might go back and get them then.

Lauren  said about 2 years ago:

by associated costs, i just meant developing. but then, are you going to watch what you have filmed on a projector? do you have a projector? or will you have to transfer the film to video or dvd?

de.foxus  said about 2 years ago:

super8 looks so pretty though...

and if you JUST get the camera, remember you'll need a projector, or a way to get the film onto DVD or video.

actually, if you find somewhere that does that, let me know. my parents have reels and reels and reels of super8 footage they never get to watch cos both their projectors are broken.

saucyjack  said about 2 years ago:

there's a place in the city that does film-dvd transfer.

a'beckett st, i think

Peter  said about 2 years ago:

i shot heaps and heaps of Super 8 in the '70s. in preparing to relocate overseas i have finally located my old school project film featuring (but not starring) K. Pengilly - someone i cannot stand because he is such a fuckwit - as a soldier.

i can suggest you buy the camera assuming it's in a working order. developing Super 8 film isn't especially difficult and sure beats sending it overseas.

Lauren  said about 2 years ago:

develop it yourself? please, more info...

mondotopless  said about 2 years ago:

The only place I've heard of in AUstralia that sells super 8 film is in Melbourne, and I have no idea what it is called. Although the price of the film includes the developing. Hmmm, I've still got too catridges of Super 8 film sitting around - one with sound, one without.

mondotopless  said about 2 years ago:

too = two

de.foxus  said about 2 years ago:

hmm, saucy, if i could smuggle the reels out of their house, that could be a really good present for them...

snapplecrunch  said about 2 years ago:

i see projectors at op shops (particularly the brotherhood of st lawrence on brunswick rd) all the time. not hard to find... school fetes, camberwell market.

Modi  said about 2 years ago:

I think it's in Prahran, mondo. You can get it. I just picked up a Canon super8 camera from my mum last night.

Also, Polaroid make the film for all the cameras they have ever released. Finding it may be another problem.

mondotopless  said about 2 years ago:

Can some ask Snout where they developed the film for their 'Miracle of Nature' filmclip. Damn, that looked great.

BAD NEWS

Important news from nano lab:

Dear nano-customer,
Due to the nature and size of the super 8 film market down under, nano
lab is having to undergo a major restructuring. To this end, while we
will remain the only lab in the southern hemisphere capable of colour
super 8 processing, we have to announce the following changes to our
service:

Our $30 colour super 8 processing service which has been delivering our
more prompt turn around times will be continuing, but at a new rate of
$35 per roll. Telecine for this service will also continue to be
available at $20 per roll for a dv codec file. Our ‘basic’ super 8
processing service, the $20 service, is, however, no longer on offer.
Similarly we are ceasing to offer processing of black and white super 8
film altogether. Black and White processing is, however, still
available from Film Plus in Melbourne.

Colour super 8 processing for our $35 service will be done on Wednesday
every week. Telecine and postage will happen on Thursdays. This should
allow for material posted to us by express post on a Monday to be back
with the sender on the Friday of the same week.

For those of you who have been using our ‘basic’ service and do not
particularly require super 8 processing in Australia, we can certainly
recommend Dwayne’s Photo in Kansas as offering a very affordable service
for colour super 8 film. Turn around time is usually a little less than
a month. To all of you in this category please accept our thanks and
appreciation for your past custom and support. Dealing with many of you
has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience for us here at nano, and
finishing with this side of our business has been a difficult but sadly
necessary step for us to take. But please don’t give up using super 8!
And note that you can still use our excellent telecine services!

Lastly, as I have had personal dealings with many of you, let me
apologise for making this announcement in the form of a ‘group email’
rather than individually … its just that there are so many of you!
Kind regards from nano,
Richard Tuohy

i got a roll of B&W super8 thats been sittin in the fridge for a few years now. it never had a use-by-date.

although at least @5 years old i'd imagine its still okay, no?

knomadix  said about 6 months ago:

you'd be surprised how long it keeps. We had stuff unrefrigerated for 2 years and it was fine.

djbollocks  said about 6 months ago:

I remember when we used to shoot on Super 8 in high school we had to send the film stock to Texas to get developed. That it would take about 2-3 months to come back used to make you very apprehensive as to how it turned out.

Footmaize  said about 6 months ago:

and like still film b&W keeps better, even unrefridgerated, than colour huh?

i am still hopin' to make a 3 min silent movie, all edited within the camera one day.

one day. ahh, procrastination.

Ben  said about 5 months ago:

I care...now.
I just bought a Minolta XL-400.. and I needs film!

Where can I get it?

Pip.  said about 5 months ago:

Can someone tell me about traveling o/s with super 8 film? I have four rolls of film to take with me - is there any particular way I should be storing them? Should they be stowed or in hand luggage? What about x-ray guff? Tell me things.

Ben  said about 5 months ago:

they tell me that the x-rays at airports dont hurt most camera film...

I havnt had a problem with my stills film... and its more sensitive than most super8

I guess Vanbars sell super8 film right?

Ben  said about 5 months ago:

can you walk in off the street at Nano Lab?

knomadix  said about 5 months ago:

vanbar, yes.. nanolab.. all mailorder.

Ben  said about 5 months ago:

well I just bought some Ektachrome 64T...
