i have wanted to do this for years and years. one day i will
i've just signed up for 2011. i have the outfits, i have the lipstick and now to find the car...... i'm thinking volvo toyota or ford
10 mins on the phone while also drinking red and watching the terror on dvd and i've verbally got a sponsor.
Should be able to find an XD-XF ford for that price. They're indestructible. I've owned an XF panel van for quite a few years, treated it like shit and never had it serviced. Still goes a charm.
my preference is volvo. ive driven into houses in a volvo, but i think weight needs to be considered - hence ford or toyota. panel van might be heavy? i'm not interested in being cool, i'm interested in competing
a panel van would be comfortable though
Not a great back end for a rally, though they are often set up with better suspension if previously used to haul tradie shit.
do i need to worry about suspension? tight seat belt helps and as long as no axle breaks.....
and after all it's only sydney to alice springs - can't do too much damage on taht road
Hellzapoppin - are you trying to sell me your panel van?
my preference for volvo has been overruled due to it's exoticness in the outback. toyota or ford it is.
but toyota and ford are boring
i've been jealous of the 24 hours of LeMons circuit race series in the USA for several years, it sounded hilarious. $500 car budget, 4-6 drivers and 24 hours of carnage. very old school top gear style.
it even has clauses like:
2.1: Vehicle Eligibility: Entry limited to mass-produced, four-wheeled vehicles legal for US highway use at the time of their manufacture. ... Individual waivers may be granted; just don't ask about Peterbilts, zambonis, sidecars, or golf carts again. We already said no.
i drove a brand new toyota camry from Darwin to Adelaide in 2006, i sat on 225kph for approx 30 mins until i almost hit a roo, scared the shit out of me!
i've never hit a roo when driving but have been a passenger in a few roo accidents. it's horrible when they die, worse when they survive, let alone the car. most city drivers on country roads just look straight ahead, but it's the long grass/low visibility on the side of roads that's dangerous. roos pop out of nowhere fast but especially at dusk and night, it's the luck of the draw. they're deaf to the pitch of cars and so don't see them until too late. you can buy little plastic thingies to put on the car that emit a pitch that roos can hear in theory. in reality it may be a tale but since putting them on one car it's had no roo accidents.
my mum was driving once and a horse jumped onto the bonnet and over the top of her 1970 ford station wagon. it's hoof went on the windscreen on top of her. lucky it was tinted and just cracked. that's fords i guess.
considering a datsun
this car would go with my khaki scouts shirt and has a padded roll cage which sounds nice. problem would be registering it.
inspiring
2011 won't be syd-alice, it's brisbane to darwin. syd-alice Is ok, bris-dar will be risky. But we've paid up and not backing out of it
I want to do this.
This could be a real laugh or a nightmare :)
then git your motor running and sign up liamsnice you lillyliver!! I'll take you on anytime..... (except 2011 is booked out so you'll have to just wait until 2012).
syd-alice would be a real laugh. I fear bris-dar will be a nightmare and I have already started laughing hysterically about it
