Black Meteoric Star = RAD!

necktie  said about 1 year ago  or at  12:29PM on Friday, March 19 2010 in music

my band-mate turned me on to the ''dreamcatcher'' 12''

...this is electronic/dance music at it best i reckon. one dude with a small array of modified equipment (ms-20, drum machine, sequencer, mixer) that builds his tracks from the ground up...absolutely fascinating. real trance music - the charlemagne palestine of this area if you like...

any one else dig, or have any info?

rad.

it's gavin russom of DFA. you might know him from the russom/gonzales duo. expansive synth excursions ahoy! the 12'' you mention is part of a series of 3 put out on DFA. for me, that one is the best by a mile. the rest are more tekkerz, IIRC.

electricsound  said about 1 year ago:

Russom is also responsible for the ace 12'' by the Crystal Ark that came out this week

puretokyo  said about 1 year ago:

yep

gavis russom has yet put a single foot wrong. the 'mars' lp under the delia & gavin name is superb, and that 12 minute opus they released as 'black leotard front' completely transcends that whole DFA schtick

puretokyo  said about 1 year ago:

thanks for the tip electricsound

anok  said about 1 year ago:

as you'll see on the myspace, he has a new project called ''the crystal ark''. he also contributed a really cool track to the ''sport hit paradise'' comp... you can find bits & pieces about that here and his track.

he also did a mix for noise in my head, is a regular remixer of quality dance/pop musics and probably has loads of mixes floating around elsewhere on websites into that type of thing.

of his recent remix work, i really liked his take on palms' boundary waters. there was also a fairly recent britney spears remix.

dude is both prolific and, at times, amazing. you're spot on about it being dance/electronic at it's best... for me anyway.

this mix was one of my favs from last year...

allez-allez mix - by gavin russom 86.90mb, 72:24mins

contains his remix of 'another one bites the dust' given a touch of acid (which sounds horrendous but totally works)

and plenty other awes stuff. all over the place dynamics but it all pulls together (the joy of ableton i guess)

necktie  said about 1 year ago:

...i like to think he avoids ableton.

the video i've seen of him is of a human building sounds using tangible objects.

maybe i'm romantising this, but the music i've heard so far implies someone who uses synths etc. (hardware, if you like). the tempos are irregular and sometimes speed up and slow down.

if there is a program that imitates old analogue stuff getting too hot and shitting itself (a lot of the time, sounding even more interesting!) then my heart has already broken. oh well.

puretokyo  said about 1 year ago:

not suggesting that russom uses it but that stuff is pretty damn easy to imitate in ableton if you are prepared to be subtle about it

interview re BMS gear:

I kind of define each project that I do by what equipment I use. For Black Meteoric Star I use an EX-800, a Korg early-80s hybrid digital-analog synth, it's a poly-800 without the keyboard, basically, and I built that into a rack case with a Moebius, a hardware sequencer made a few years ago by Future-Retro.

Basically it's a very, very expanded version of a Roland-style step sequencer, like you'd find on an MC 202, where you assign a note to each step in a sixteen-step sequence. This one is just a lot more elaborate, you can chain a lot of sequences together, edit stuff on the fly. It's actually an incredible tool and it also takes MIDI inputs and then has all kinds of outputs. So when I'm doing Black Meteoric Star I'm using MIDI to trigger the EX-800, I use the 707 for all the beats and then I have a sequential circuits six-track which is also a hybrid keyboard from the early '80s.

thank you.

shunt  said about 1 year ago:

yeah i'm sure the tunes are pretty much totally analogue productions... that mix sounds digitally threaded together to me but i could be wrong

don't worry i can assure you the guy checks his email with pen and paper
