This thread isn't meant to be controversial.... but, leading on from the debate over Lisa Mitchell's AMP win and the merits of Sarah Blasko, Bertie Blackman et al, who would you say are Australia's most 'credible' female recording artists / songwriters, past and present.
I just wonder how this list would stack up against those old chestnuts like Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, etc, whom a lot of people seem to hold up as the benchmarks of Australian creativity.

got a soft spot for Renee
Super Wild Horses.
Luke Steele.
i'm not sure it's even worth framing an argument against this point of view, though!
baaddd
i can certainly think of tonnes of australian female musicians that have made interesting music that i've enjoyed - off the top of my head - andie pepper, melanie oxley, anita lane, trish and judi clouds, julie mostyn, deborah conway, lucy from NOTV, sandy evans, maria kozik, louise elliot, cathy green, juliet ward, clare moore etc etc
monika fikerle, antonia sellbach
kate wilson. obviously.
she sang this song once, at some pub. la la la.
Most people are better than Tim Rogers.
Paul kelly kicks arse. he's like a really awesome uncle.
I'd Go Stegwazi over Tim Rogers any day.
matrimony
seja vogel
YES. KATE WILSON. TOTAL CHAMP.

Your former bandmate, Kirsty Stegwazi, has some pretty hardcore street cred! Also, Penny Ikinger is awesome... her album from a few years ago, 'Electra', is a classic from start to finish yet I don't think it made any lists.
And Luke Steele is a fantastic call, Zaphod!!!!!
Um, Adalita.
ha, thanks hedgehog. i'll pass the compliment to my writers.

i'm not sure i believe in credibility as such when it comes to such a thoroughly contrived area of human endeavour as popular music
BUT i must say i don't find sarah blasko particularly non-credible
Popularity/sellout/demographic/MOR/annoyances/tastelessness aside, Katie Noonan has a hell of a lot of talent. Here's hoping she uses it for good instead of evil someday.

the dead can dance woman. i think so..,. I wsas trying to remember her name.
Amanda Brown
Jane Dust is great Jose.
And so are Tammy and Eliza from Royalchord
Some good suggestions there. Sorry, the Paul Kelly Tim Rogers comparison was a bit of a bum steer. I like the fact that people can think outside specific genres or roles within a group. That was exactly my point in relation to the AMP awards - there is an incredible wealth of female talent beyond hyped singer/songwriters with little-girl voices.
That would be Lisa Gerrard
Juanita Stein
Angie Hart
Romy
Mia Dyson
Cathy Green (drummer from X)
Marsha Hines.
Jimmy Tait
Cash Savage
Liz Thompson
Liz Turner
Jess Shulman
Penny Ikinger
E-wah lady
Emily Ulman
Ali E
Genevieve & Jezebel
Linda J
For starters...
That chick in machine gun fellatio who always got her tits out on-stage.
That would be Christa Hughes
Collette
i dunno about all this singer songwriter stuff, but there lots of good female musos playing in bands n that
Just to clarify Frankie, you talking about singer songwriter solo type acts or just girls in bands?
loene carmen, ikinger, deb conway....
even kasey chambers rep is still good, isnt it?
i love that catcall song. you know the one. whole different world to paul kelly but
I'm not having a go at this thread or the content therein, but does it make anyone else uncomfortable that such a discrepancy exists? I wouldn't say I'm offended by it but it does bother me that people in general feel the need to justify that women musicians can be credible.
It's an age old argument & no-one in this thread is at fault. It just makes me sad.
as ever, one of my favourite quotes, from a female musician was the one that went 'they never compare neil finn and stephen tyler just because they've both got penises, do they?'
my argument would be that there are plenty of people of both sexes making interesting and worthwhile music in my world
and if radio plays more paul kelly than cat hope then that's their problem and not mine

yes, I agree fully with those sentiments. Generally, it's not a debate I would find it was necessary to have. This thread was my response to the controversy caused by the AMP thread, ie: the narrow field of female artists shortlisted, and whether the choice of winner was another form of tokenism in disguise rather than a genuine acknowledgement of artistic merit (dubious and subjective as that kind of judgement may be).
