Hello there...
I play in a small Sydney band called Lazy Susan and on Friday, 25 June our new album, Places that Made Us, is being released.
I know, it's a long way off - 14 weeks away in fact. But to countdown towards the big day we'll be uploading each of the 14 tracks from the album - for a week at a time - on our myspace page to give anyone who's interested a sneak listen.
The first song - and the first song off the album - is 'Easy Targets'. Next week, it's 'Stardust Hotel'...so stay tuned.
Have a listen to it here for one week only
Hope you like it. Roll on June 25.
Burt

Nice stuff.
Nice song, Burty. Love the keys. hillsong?
Great idea. I look forward to hearing it all.
Thanks everyone. Yes indeed, that's Hillbong pounding away at the keys.
Cheers. Some bloke called Glenn Thompson plays the drums on this one too. He did a good job.
Woah, cool.
oh yay!
i've always hearted lazy susan. listened to long lost again the other day for the first time in a while, it's still ace.
Dave Keys on bass?
The one and the same. I should change my surname to Bass.
Don't worry, I won't drive everyone crazy with bumping this every minute of the day. Just I started this thread last night and thought I'd whack it up on front page for day visitors.
As you were.
Are you trying to avoid being an Easy Target for accusations of band spam, Burt?
Okay, week 2 of Lazy Susan's '14 songs in 14 weeks' initiative to provide you, dear listener, with sneak listens of tracks from our new album Places that Made Us which is released 25 June.
So I guess that meanshello to the second song on the album, Stardust Hotel.
If you wanna have a listen - click here. You've got a week to lend it your ears before we put the next one up.
Hope you enjoy.
I'm feeling very much like the dude from Ruteger who used to bump his threads here to universal disinterest...but at least I only do it once a week.
that popboomerang guy does that also! losers! he he
ps: ruteger have reformed for 2 shows!
tell us more about the new song on the myspace burt. what's it about?
wow, where and when?
and ''why?'' just kidding -one show was in Bendigo & one down here -supporting Steve Lane
poprocks sent me an email about Ruteger reforming...at least they took the piss out of themeslves for doing so!
hillsong, funny you should ask, it's about a middle-aged crim - a ‘driver’ - the bloke whose job it is to stay behind the wheel of the getaway car during a hold-up. He's been trying to go straight only to fall back into old ways.
that keyboard line was about trying to capture that horrible, tinny poker machine music that permeates so many of Sydney's suburban beer barns.
are you saying my keyboard line is horrible and tinny?!
(kidding)
i thought ''stardust hotel'' had one of the best vocal melodies on the album.
thanks Hillbong. nice to see Williammiller liked it too.

We got a 4/5 star review in today's Daily Telegraph which we're very happy about.
Apparently we're ''soul-fired beat boys''. Is that a euphemism?
''hole fried rent boys''?
Lazy Susan
Places That Made Us
(Independent)
Pop thrills, ghosts of lovers past, giddy melodies to help you sing it better.
'Twas ever thus for this criminally under-rated Sydney quartet. They might not have cracked the mainstream, but it's not for want of making great albums, because this makes it four from four. They belong to a line of soul-fired beat boys that starts with the Beatles and works through Elvis Costello (see Get Happy) and Squeeze (see East Side Story). Places That Made Us can hold its head up in such lofty company, from thumping soul grooves (Find Me A Way Back Into Your Heart) to aching ballads (Ghost) and razor-sharp vignettes (No Good Cheap Way, a pop symphony in 1 minute, 45 seconds).
Sounds like: a fizzy antidote to Top 40 fodder.
In a word: insidious.
Another tops review for our new album, this time on The Vine
Lazy Susan
Places That Made Us
(Self-Released)
Four albums in, the members of Sydney’s Lazy Susan are no less enamoured with classic pop songwriting than on their 2001 debut Long Lost. Indeed, Places That Made Us basks in elegant string arrangements, robust guitar and keyboard melodies, charismatic vocals, and finely tuned lyrics. Although there’s definitely some Spoon on album opener ‘Easy Targets’ – what with fuzzy guitars, plodding keys, cool effects, and scratchy vocals – the bulk of these 14 tunes reach further back, tapping into the casual timelessness of Squeeze, Nick Lowe, and Randy Newman, to name a few. Centred on the songwriting of singer/guitarist Paul Andrews and guitarist/singer Pete Wilson, the quartet knows what it wants and pursues it with aplomb, regardless of the lack of huge demand for this kind of stuff.
Considering the two- and three-minute duration of many of these songs and the sheer amount of them, Places That Made Us can favourably recall Sloan’s channel-surfing 2006 outing Never Hear The End Of It. As soon as one catchy barb has taken hold, we’re on to another. That’s not a complaint, and Lazy Susan doesn’t skimp on variety. The Squeeze-ish ‘Stardust Hotel’ has a modest and likeable drum-machine beat, while ‘Somewhere’ bucks with ragged guitar and ‘Ghost’ betrays a starkness that even strings and keyboards can’t hide. Then there’s the funky hook of ‘Around You’, the Velvets grit of ‘Sore Losers’, the smart-arse lyrics of ‘Bad Hands’, and the Stones-y barroom piano of ‘Don’t Get Too Excited’. Even the few quiet acoustic songs feel crisp, fresh, and bright.
These 14 tracks were reportedly pared down from 20, which explains their quality, and span 15 years of songwriting, which explains their range. That said, no one’s tuning into Places That Made Us for hazy laptop atmospherics or blown-out noise. This is songwriter pop, tried and true, and it can work wonders even in today’s over-saturated, seen-it-all field of music. That such a well-constructed album – available for stream and download at lazysusan.bandcamp.com – was made by an Aussie band is reason to be chuffed. Lazy Susan may not be reinventing the wheel, but that’s the whole point.
Great review!
Still waiting for M+N to chime in...
Nice one, Burt
Anyone got a number for Burt?
bump
we just got the support for Brian Wilson's Sydney show at Enmore Theatre on 5 November. Absolutely over the moon!!!!
It'll be fun fun fun!
Well done guys!
Awesome!
Is that the sound of hilly fainting?
Nice work.
I trust the bonus live EP with the repackage next year is called ''Places That Paid Us''.
Congrats guys. Well deserved :)
Maybe the album will be M+N review-worthy, now? ;-P
Happy is an understatement. I think M&N got a review copy but I'm not 100% sure...I'm scared to ask.
''Groupies That Laid Us''?
''Buffys That Slayed Us''?
Great album. Not reviewing it though, which is probably a good thing since Burt fucking hates everything I've ever done.
Nice work on the BW slot. I'm sure someone will get to it here. I'd like a Mathieson review, personally.
LS playing tomorrow night at Raval with D. Rogers
