apparantly this guy, who is popular with some indie-type folks, is touring. it seems like he should have a thread. it feels to me like he's reached that level of hype/alt-popularity (why hasn't timewaster started a thread about him yet?).
anyway, he's pretty great. someone should link to his myspace/twitter/label. and post some pix.

This guy is whack
where is shaun when we need him?
frowny

Too black for timewaster.
Sweet jam he did with Nite Jewel here. Apparently there is full album between the two coming up on Stones Throw soon as well.

nice interview with dan rule @ CD

Niche.
Ha, the Severed Heads interview on CDefrost is illustrated with a huge photo (and homepage thumbnail) of Dave Mason from The Reels. Someone's just hit Flickr tags without actually bothering to look at the pictures!

12 to 01 Sean Deans
01 to 03 Dam-Funk
03 to 04 Kano

Super excited about tomorrow's gig. I wonder though if anyone will go? Can't see him moving many units of teachizown (even if it's amazing) to justify a big crowd.
awesome. thanks for the times attali!
i'm not really familiar enough with the kinda sub-scenes of melb that his music might fall within (hell, i'm not really sure what they'd be), to have any idea as to who might go, but all i know is only two from our usually healthy gig-going crew are gonna go.
having said all that, he's sure to still have a blast, if his constant tour-tweets are anything to go by. in nz last night & tonight.
I'll be there as part of a group of 4 so at least there will be at least 6 people there! Dam will probably pull in some of the Melbourne rap crowd (for better or worse), some funk nerds (Northside Records clientele) and assorted ''coolsies'', I reckon.
Can't wait. Been down with this dude since I picked up a 12'' in Toronto a few years back. His twitter is ridiculous. Seems like a genuine dude too.
serious gig of the year potential.
DF@home
would love a report about how melb goes. i'm still umming and ahing over whether to go to sydney.
red menace got retweeted by the dam himself!
jimm, you should go. dam funk shows are fun!
this was a blast. df was so earnest and positive. it was very sweet. his 'set' was a mix of him djing some boogie/funk (i guess) classics, some really cool weird electronic bits, as well as him busting out heaps his own shit, which he'd occasionally croon/keytar/vocode-keytar over or do all of the above in the crowd. there was also a massive motivational-speaker vibe to the set, which probably rings alarm bells, but his sincerity is almost impossible to resist. he pushes the ''never give up on your dream'' vibe so hard, but he's living that shit, loving it and loving the people that love him. he really gives a lot of love to the crowd and it's infectious.
i guess the highlight (that i recognised) of the dj part set was the controversy/i wanna be your lover double. crowd lapped that shit up. later, after he played this extended vocoder/keytar jam, he returned to behind the decks and dropped some stupidly great tom-heavy thing of his that i didn't recognise. it went for 10 entrancing minutes and kinda revived a set that very occasionally struggled to maintain its vibe for 2+ hours.
crowd was pretty good. not packed but pretty into it. a handful of local VIPs and pranksters were on hand. some amazing dancing happened down the back near us including two (mock) dance offs involving this enthusiastic muscle dude and an amazing power dancer guy and then trev from bum creek, who pulled some classic shit out to amuse the dude party down back. we kinda watched/bopped to most of it from from the elevated back bit, feeling all plump from too much dainty sichuan, but happy to have made it to that point of the night. got home by 3:30. good fun!
Oh yay!
This was such a fun show. The guy is so POSITIVE and endearing in his love for performing that I challenge anyone not to come away feeling something warm in their chest.
The 'soulful ad libs' are worth the price of admission in themselves. He's also kind of like the Tony Robbins of Futurefunk. I am totally going to believe in my dream and not let the haters get me down!!!!
Oh man, I'd all but pulled out of my plans to hit the Sydney show tonight 'til I opened this thread. Sounds like something I really gotta experience - thanks for the reviews, Melbournians! I need me some feelgood.
thanks for the lovely reports/endorsements. sounds like awesome fun and total positive vibes. there is a total love-in going on about the melb show in dam funk's twitter too!
you guys should def go and bring your dancing shoes if you're that kinda human. another awesome thing is that he enthusiastically announces the records he's spinning, with like dates and record label. he's no snob! sharing the hits.
This was pretty much everything I hoped for. it's so refreshing to see a dude so into his music and so enthusiastic about sharing the knowledge. Loved the keytar solo, the transitions in his sets (celebration into I wanna be your lover was pretty mindblowing, agreed) and jumped on the mic to sing the hits. We hung out in the back and had a great time. Pretty much gig of the year for me so far.
Apparently, he's played a few shows with a full band in LA and NYC. Dam on keytar and vocals, 2 or 3 dudes on vintage synths and a drummer. That shit needs to tour the world immediately.
ps anyone have a mp3 of that Hood Pass Intact remix with MC Eiht?
whoa i'm glad I opened this thread. so much love for the basement too - should be interesting. too bad my dancing capacity terminates at belligerent bopping.
fuck a thirty dolla ticket
this friggen owned last night
Jealous!
last night was incredible. i pretty much died when he played change - paradise AND THEN prince - wanna be your lover. fucking amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auQSaLCMAWA
that is a fucking serious record
bah, Basement said he was on at 9 sharp so I didn't go - found out today he wasn't on until midnight!
Killer show. The world needs more middle of the dance floor keytar solos.

Saw Dam-Funk two nights in a row last week. Gave him a gratuitous and completely unnecessary hug. Love that guy sooooooooooooo much.
what were his sets like this time? he's kinda completely dropped off my radar since last time.
