liamsnice  said about 1 year ago  or at  10:43AM on Wednesday, March 17 2010 in chat

this place seems to be doing good things and picking up the slack from the tote.

website

anyone actually played there? got any stories?

the beer garden is pretty amazing.

tangy_zizzle  said about 1 year ago:

Sweet. I've long thought this place had a lot of potential.

Block  said about 1 year ago:

Do they just run through genres each week?
Queer
Roots
Rockabilly
Burlesque
Alt-folk
press play/repeat

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

Walk past it constantly, never been in there. Would love it to be a good new place to go. I just went to the website and voted for a tiki bar.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

It's a great pub.

They used to have lots of rockabilly on a Sunday arvo. New guys took over a few years back and it took 'em a little while to find their feet but they seem to be hitting their stride now.

I reckon the venue (and that end of Johnston street in general) has scads of potential to pick up the slack.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 1 year ago:

It was the most lesbian pub I've ever been to in my life. The food wasn't too bad.

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

I see ''New War DJs'' played last Friday. That's cool. Now get New War to play.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

More than the Glasshouse?

liamsnice  said about 1 year ago:

actually it just changed hands again JRB (no not to me) but it has been sold. i get the feeling they are just trying heaps of things to see what work there but i kinda like the mish mash. the food is good.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

Ah, I was thinking that might be the case. The place looked like it was trying different things and that's a clue that a venue is changing hands.

Might check it out this weekend if I get the time. Been too long since I spent the night just doing the rounds in Fitzroy/Collingwood.

liamsnice  said about 1 year ago:

with the tote most likely being sold to fuck knows who and becoming fuck knows what i think its good to see someone else take on collingwood. we should all get behind it and book some shows there. in saying that it is a very small stage so maybe more suited to bands without drums or accoustic acts.

Steady on- you're talking the John Barleycorn and (shudder) the Yarra there, JRB.

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

surely the Glassy would hold the lesbian title.

as for the Bendigo, it is very close to my house, but i've never been tempted to go in there.

I know that I am.

Neither is a great venue right now but the location is good. With a bit of love and care we could get something going on.

happycow  said about 1 year ago:

Chopper's pub (Leinster Arms) on Gold St could be better utilised for indie gigs too.

liamsnice  said about 1 year ago:

put those in hands of different owners and watch them flourish block. i mean couldnt you just imagine yourself knitting in front of a warm fire at the yarra on a cold winter eve?

Block  said about 1 year ago:

No, but I can imagine warming my hands on some lesbians.

JRB  said about 1 year ago:

My vision is a strip of band venues from the Old Bar down to the Barleycorn. You could spend your weekend tramping up and down and checking out the bands. It'll happen I tells ya!

liamsnice  said about 1 year ago:

gabbo - try it out. i think that the decor needs to grubby up a bit but grab a drink and hit the beer garden, it sweet.

although i do have one complaint, they need to get rid of the early 90's juke box / film clip set up in the joint. i love a beer in the outdoor area but add pink and beyonce on the speakers and a big tv and i wanna bail!

gabbo  said about 1 year ago:

that might just be enough to get me in there. i love me some beyonce.

then again, this place and the Tankerville could just bookend Johnston st.

cowbell1  said about 1 year ago:

saw dutch tilders there just poped in & out few weeks ago lots of people majority lesbians great beergarden too

She could just be a doosh bag. DID YOU EVER THINK OF THAT?!??!

Yeah, I think we are. You know I can leave work early if I STOP ARGUINNNNNNNGGGGG WITH YEEEW.

Maximum Sincere  said 2 hours ago:

Well if you are wearing a swastika symbol in today's culture where it's pretty frowned upon, which is what you stated max, and is still considered wrong, I'd consider you a doosh bag. It's no Ed Hardy dooshery but it's dooshery non the less.

Look, comparing support for the Nazi party or modern race hate groups with wearing Ed Hardy t-shirts is pretty offensive. Douchebags are everywhere. It's very fucking different to self-identifying as a nazi.

Davel  said 2 hours ago:

I've encountered young punks wearing nazi badges and stuff. They had no idea of history or what nazis were.

Maximum Sincere  said 2 hours ago:

Thanks for your contribution to this discussion three tacos but I think we're done here, cheers.

TacoTacoTaco  said 2 hours ago:

Identifying as a Nazi makes you a doosh bag. Especially if you should know better. Full stop. There are different types of doosh bags, as stated earlier I'm not going into the semantics of being a doosh bag.

Yeah, me too!

Satire = good; smartarsery = douchebageery.

I prove that here on a daily basis.

mulligan  said 2 hours ago:

Well my band are playing there tonight so I'll report back

FrankieTeardrop  said 2 hours ago:

I'll be keeping an eye out for stormtroopers tonight. I'm a bit dubious about mulligan's band ''Bodies'' too. I hear they're closet white supremacists.

anonymous  said 2 hours ago:

I heard it was that they're white and find living in the closet super.

chimpassgimp666  said 2 hours ago:

So what about the dude who sells flags in Chelsea or wherever he is and happily flys a nazi flag out the front of his business?

He doesn't usually play at the Bendigo but I'm sure he'd like to.

losgauchos  said 1 hour ago:

Nazi Punks have been around for awhile

dnzr  said 59 minutes ago:

i know the band booker at the bendigo extemely well - DC is a very political dude of the left leaning type and would also have zero tolerance for anything even vaguely racist.

he was the booker at the arty for years before it shut too if that gives an idea of the ethics/calibre of the dude.

gossip like ''OMG is teh bendigo the nu nutzi haus?'' is shitty and can be really damaging to a pub where the owner is currently busting a gut to turn into a good, credible live venue.

Maximum Sincere  said 58 minutes ago:

So what do you make of the door girl wearing a swastika then, dnzr?

dnzr  said 52 minutes ago:

who knows?

dumb punk kid?

even dumber moron trying to be ironic?

but seriously, coming out with shit like

Seriously, I think there are some neos up in this place.

is just fucking stupid and irresponsible.

if you truly gave a fuck, you'd have called the pub by now and complained or asked what's up?

Maximum Sincere  said 47 minutes ago:

I thought it was worth posting on Mess and Noise, but not worth calling the venue about. I have no responsibility to the venue.

who knows?
dumb punk kid?
even dumber moron trying to be ironic?

I don't know what's worse, wearing a neo nazi t-shirt, or the endless methods people seem to have available to downplay this shit.

dnzr  said 45 minutes ago:

thought it was worth posting on Mess and Noise, but not worth calling the venue about

then you are a fucking idiot.

Maximum Sincere  said 40 minutes ago:

You, on the other hand, sound like a very pleasant chap indeed.

dnzr  said 31 minutes ago:

please, run bleating and gossiping to the internet loudly asking if a pub is the ''new birmy'' and asserting you're pretty sure there is some ''neos'' up in there.

do know if it was an employee of the pub on the door or just some random connected to the band?

nah broseph, run shrieking to a forum ready to point a finger at the venue for being a hot bed of sig heils without even bothering to find out or ask what ws up on the night.

that sir, makes you an irresponsible fuckwit.

Maximum Sincere  said 31 minutes ago:

I made some comments about the Bar Open bar staff never serving drinks and just chatting to their mates at the end of the bar all night? Should I put on my Aunt Mavis voice and ring up the venue? Do people fucking do that?

dnzr  said 28 minutes ago:

ah, slight difference between rude bar staff and accusing a venue of being neo nazis.

Maximum Sincere  said 23 minutes ago:

Ok, that's totally true.

For the record I never accused the venue of being neo nazis. I just said the door person was wearing a swastika t-shirt - which is factually true. And then made some hilarious speculation about the Birmingham which was in no way intended to be taken seriously.

Then came the discussion about if neo-nazis can fairly be classified as ''douchebags'' or not.
