Brisbane Lockout protest today!

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago  or at  12:17PM on Thursday, March 11 2010 in music

Brisbane music fans unite!

Today at 4pm there will be a protest against the new lock out laws. Parliament house on George st. If you don't have a sign, bring along a copy of the latest time off mag to wave around.

Remember, it's drug and alcohol free. Bring family members, co-workers, friends, who ever you can. It's our chance to voice how the new 12am lock out, 2am shutdown will destroy Brisbane's music scene.

Can't believe Brisbane is trying this when it was a total failure in Melbourne. Go Brisbanites, kill this thing dead!

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

We gotta try!

I hear these lads are making an appearance to show their disapproval....

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Good luck with this protest. I hope lots of people turn up.

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Thanks Frankie! I don't think it will be as big as Melbourne. I don't think they will have any bands playing either.

Block  said about 1 year ago:

Seems like kinda short notice.
But yes, like FT said, good luck!

tenzenmen  said about 1 year ago:

how was it a failure in melbourne? is it still in place? sydney? was it trying to cut down on alcohol related violence? are there stats and reports online? questions questions...sorry.

zeechicks  said about 1 year ago:

I think it's been in the works for a couple of weeks Block, but people have been shit at spreading the word.

questionmark  said about 1 year ago:

Brisbane had 3 am lockout before Melbourne. This latest proposal is called 'keep digging'.

mjlivi  said about 1 year ago:

Temet - the Melbourne lockout was in the inner-city only and lasted just for the three month trial. It was evaluated by KPMG (the report is online somewhere), and they basically found it made no difference to indicators of alcohol-problems (violence, ambo attendances etc). The major problem with the evaluation is that the implementation of the lockout was a disaster, with ~150 premises granted last minute exemptions. So it was barely even a lockout in the end.

There's not much evidence about on how effective genuine lockouts are - some sketchy stuff on the Brisbane 3am lockout which suggests small effects and a few fairly basic studies of regional cities which are inconclusive. It's a very Australian idea - I don't think any other countries have tried them out.

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah how was it a failure in Melbourne?

You know what we need, a last minute dazzling speech from this guy.....

SUPPORT LIVE QLD MUSIC
By Ian
11 March 2010 00:00:00
The Queensland Government is looking to close all venues at 2am or 3am. We are strongly urging all Queenslanders who enjoy going out to see live music to oppose this initiative. Says Ian, ''Any strict lockdown policy is a step backwards in nightlife management. There will be a trickle down effect to not only venue operators and staff, but all musicians, dj's, visual artists etc etc, will be affected financially as these venues make most of their money after midnight. It is not going to solve any late night violence issues that exist, in fact, putting everyone on the street earlier is likely to compound the issue. If Brisbane wants to be a modern city, with well managed night life venues, and have a thriving music scene, this can not happen.''

kuro - so it was a success? i'm confused now!

tenzenmen  said about 1 year ago:

when there was a thriving music scene in brisbane, sydney, melbourne etc - what time did venues close in those days?

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

In Brisbane, the music scene was the best it had ever been prior to the installation of the 3am lockout in my opinion.

MissAustralia2003  said about 1 year ago:

why wasn't this majorly announced earlier? I went to sign the online petition (using a Qld address) and baulked a little at the political slant of it:

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Yeah the organisation has not been brilliant. It's kind of been left to the punters to get the troops into action. We are Queenslanders; everything we do is at the last minute.

Pelt and/or Holler  said about 1 year ago:

The lockout has been a terrible idea, and anything earlier would make matters worse, not better.

TBQH though, and not to distract too much from the point, I've got to agree with the sentiment above though baulking at the political slant. On this issue, the ALP are shooting themselves in the foot, sure, and hopefully they will get a big fright from something like this, but the LNP are hardly going to be any better in this issue (to my knowledge, they haven't even gone in with any of the ''we care'' blatant political opportunism that the Liberals did in Victoria).

Also, to be slightly cynical, with Queensland only having a unicameral parliament, the options are pretty much limited to ALP or LNP. Even in inner city seats, smaller parties (Greens, Dems, et al), and whilst a big fright to the ALP is necessary in a lot of ways by this point in their electoral cycle, I think there's also enough people who still go out, and remember life in the Bjelke-Petersen/Ahern governments who would feel pretty damn uncomfortable with the notion of voting for LNP. (I'm too young to remember that era, but from talking to people and reading about it, not a pleasant time to be a young music loving whippersnapper). My 2c, etc.

ANYWAY! I hope this protest goes well. I think I am going to miss out on it, and I am sad that this looks to be the case.

You're probably right there.

As a slight positive, do you reckon that the lockout/venues closing gave rise to a more rad house parties?

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Haha not really rawr.

rawr  said about 1 year ago:

Probably just my perception then - I left town slightly pre-lockout.

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

You left us? WHY!

rawr  said about 1 year ago:

Oh Brisbane, it's not you, it's me... OK, maybe you were a little bit boring.

Brisbane sucks because everyone leaves instead of sticking around to make it better.

That is my theory (and I am totally guilty of it). Am I right?

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Yes you are. Traitor! If this goes through, I'm packing up my shit and moving down with you Melbourne kids.

rawr  said about 1 year ago:

This town is crawling with traitors, you'd feel right at home ;)

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

I was in Melbourne a few years ago when they did the trial of the lockout. I had a wonderful conversation with a bouncer.

Me: (Rushing to a club as 2:00am was fast approaching) ''Can I still get in!''
Bouncer:''Uh...yeah...why wouldn’t you''
Me:''Lockout?''
Bouncer:''Oh that...yeah...we are not paying attention to that, enjoy your night''
Me:” I love Melbourne''

rawr  said about 1 year ago:

Hahaha yeah it goes alright

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

It's official. The lockout is going ahead. Thanks for killing Brisbane Anna Bligh.

NiteShok  said about 1 year ago:

Link plz?

email  said about 1 year ago:

I was working in a live music venue 10 years ago, just after a lockout had been introduced.

It was one of the things that killed us.

Sorry for your loss, Brisbane.

questionmark  said about 1 year ago:

It's official.

No it isn't.

unvisible  said about 1 year ago:

I think maybe Jackbratt is referring to this newscorp article from today, which merely mentions that the Law, Safety and Justice Committee will hand down its findings tomorrow, and reiterates what the proposed new laws are.

Jackbratt  said about 1 year ago:

Ah yes thanks unvisible I couldn't find the link. We are screwed.
