Flying Nun + SPUD and all that ...

muddeath  said about 5 years ago  or at  7:08PM on Wednesday, November 15 2006 in music news

Those of you who are familiar with Flying Nun Records in the 90s may remember a band called S.P.U.D.
S.P.U.D belonged the noisier lineage of F.Nun acts like The Gordons , Bailter Space , Into the Void etc...
This band also toured Melb. & Sydney during the early 90s playing with such bands as Crow , Lubricated Goat & Venom P Stinger ...
So in the spirit of pointless nostalgia there is now a myspace page for S.P.U.D.
If you're feeling all nostalgic for some kiwi noise or just plain curious check out the page :
www.myspace.com/spudnz

No music posted yet - but should have some up soon..

cheers

silvertone  said about 5 years ago:

yeah!

S.P.U.D. playing at the old low-ceiling Manning Bar were amazing, as were Mudhoney at the same venue around 1990/91

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

You know its the funniest thing, I just searched for a S.P.U.D myspace the other day and upon seeing nothing contemplated starting one up!! Always wanted to see the video they did for 'Breakdown Town'. Shall have to pull out Sour on the record player tonight for some sweet memories!

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

We should also have some Solid Gold Hell love!!! ...'The Country Sow'!! What a fucking track!

muddeath  said about 5 years ago:

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

That's a fine collection.. worth it for the Shayne Carter & Peter Jefferies - 'Randolph's Going Home' track alone!... though I would have gone for 'The Sleepwalker' over This Kind of Punishments 'Immigration Song'

switchbladesisters  said about 5 years ago:

I may be alone here, but I think the Subliminals are quite underrated.

and no Rainy Days???

fastcanoe  said about 5 years ago:

They most certainly are.. that Crystal Chain e.p is stunning.. nice to see brendan moran's drumming in a different sphere.

Didn't Rainy Days just have a single 7" out on the nun?

filterfeed  said about 5 years ago:

$150. baaah.

hiponion  said about 5 years ago:

oh man. i only now found out about that box set. too late, probably...

Does anyone know anything about the band Solid Gold Hell on Flying Nun? I've got one song called ''Country Sow'' which is killer. It's very Killdozer.

unvisible  said about 1 year ago:

There are some fairly expensive limited edition Bats, Gordons, 3Ds and Clean t-shirts available on the FN website at the moment. Currently trying to talk myself out of buying all of them.

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

fairly expensive

your not wrong there. i'd probably swap ''fairly'' with ''ridiculously''.

wouldn't mind the gordons one though...

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

I was very keen on a Gordons shirt as well.. but not at that fucking price.

national_highway_31  said about 1 year ago:

I just ordered the new album from The Cakekitchen from a blog using PayPal. Allegedly, a one time pressing of 300, and vinyl only. Is this the future of music distribution?

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

yes, i'd say so and it sucks balls.

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

also thanks, didn't know about that one..

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Thanks for the heads up national_highway_31, I had no idea Cakekitchen was still that active.

national_highway_31  said about 1 year ago:

I stopped following Graeme Jefferies and Peter Jefferies output in the mid '90s, but got suckered back into this one because of the Australian theme.

Tracklisting is;

A1 I Just Want To Take You Higher
A2 Poor Bi-Cameral Mind
A3 Fashion Chops
A4 Kangaroos In My Top Paddock
A5 My Beautiful Fire Tamer
A6 You'd Better Get Off Your Arse
B1 Glebe Point Road
B2 This Australian Christmas
B3 It Don't Work Out
B4 Curry In A Hurry
B5 Rubberbendy Man
B6 Petersham Rainsong #2

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Holy fuck, that's woeful.

turkey_sandwich  said about 1 year ago:

''curry in a hurry'' - sounds like a peter coombes song...

Does anyone have Melt by Straitjacket Fits?

jbiz  said about 11 months ago:

Magicpants, I can't vouch for the link. It looks like a low-ish bitrate. Pretty sure Flying Nun still has the CD instock.

magicpants  said about 11 months ago:

Thanks, amigo. Much appreciated.

max bulk  said about 11 months ago:

Got my record console back from the bloke last night, and Hail's getting a thrashing already. Straitjacket Fits are fucking great. Shayne Carter sings kinda like a kind of proto-Perry Farrell.

jbiz  said about 11 months ago:

And yet Shayne Carter has not struck me as being a twit.

He does use 'bro' a lot in sentences.

Straitjacket Fits are fucking great.

I prefer Shayne's earlier bands The Doublehappys and Bored Games, but this statement still gets a thumbs-up from me.
