from the abc wire -
*The Victorian Government has funded a new music industry lobby group.
Music Victoria will advocate on behalf of Melbourne musicians, and has been given an initial funding allocation of 250-thousand dollars.
The Government has been criticised over its liquor licensing fee structure, which is hurting live music venues.*

I just hope these guys will have some teeth
hi lozz - thankyou for posting that link to the survey awhile back, yes when you did i went to the site to do the survey. but didn't get past q.1 and closed it because there was no category for 'music consumer' and i didn't think consumers should be put into 'other'. i decided to butt myself out of it as being irrelevant to it.
maybe if music vic want to have 'teeth' perhaps they need to harness not only the music community but consumers too? just a thought, it may be that they don't have the resources to crowd source or crowd surf etc yet
I'd say there was no 'consumer' category because their survey was based on people with involvement in the music industry.
thankyou xx
Finding it difficult to get straight facts about this so I've just asked Peter to explain:
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply.
I appreciate and thank you for all that you are doing to support and
maintain our beloved live music scenes in Melbourne, as you eloquently
put it Melbourne is the heart and soul of Australian live music.
I am quite intrigued as to the details of this Accord you have
mentioned and was hoping you could provide me with some details as to
it's intentions. Or even to point me in the direction of detailed
information related to it.
I can appreciate the perceived need for another Music body, however
judging by it's description as a 'contemporary music' peak body, I
have some concerns as to it's motives and effectiveness
Melbourne thrives as a world leader in Music due to it's diversity. It
has been an avid supporter of non-mainstream Music art and exploration
and through this provides a cutting edge insight into fashion and
trend development within music scenes.
The dangers we are facing with mis-informed policy development
threaten to undermine this and in effect reduce Melbourne's capacity
for innovation within Music scenes.
It is paramount to the survival of Melbourne's musical reputation that
non-conformist albeit non-contemporary musical institutions are
maintained and protected.
The mainstream Music industry does have it's place as a mechanism for
tourism and profitability however it is the 'underground' Music
industry that defines the next generation of salable content. Without
this natural form of market research Melbourne is destined to lose
it's status as a world leader in Music development.
I implore you to maintain a strong focus on saving Melbourne's live
music scene from destruction, and I hope that you consider drastically
the effects of ignoring the small pieces that make up the larger
community. A blanket approach will not cover everyone within the
multitude of Music scenes/genres/industry within Melbourne, if
anything it will isolate further and cause people to look elsewhere.
In response, can you please detail the ways in which your office is
considering these effects, and can you outline any strategies you have
in development for the maintenance of Melbourne's diverse sub-culture
communities.
Again I thank you for your much needed attention to this issue. It is
a great comfort to know we have you on our side.
Faithfully,
Brian O'Dwyer
Brian... I think the term ''contemporary'' is used as a contrast to the (already significantly represented) ''classical'' ''opera'' ''jazz'' etc music...
if you have a look at WAM, MusicNSW, Q Music etc... these are the other state equivalents. They all join together (like Voltron) to make AMIN. I think that the ''non-conformist'' and ''underground'' music you refer to will fall within Music Vic's def. of ''contemporary''
faints from overuse of quotation marks
also... Music Victoria, got any jobs going?
I understand. I also think that these groups should fall under Music Victoria's banner, however, this has not been the case with other industry based orgs in Victoria. It's great to assume but I feel more proactive to question.
