The Biennale of Sydney presents SuperDeluxe@Artspace
For the first time in Australia, Tokyo’s popular experimental cultural space SuperDeluxe will be presented in Sydney as part of the official program of the 17th Biennale of Sydney.
Presented at Artspace for the duration of the Biennale, SuperDelxue@ArtSpace combines art gallery, performance venue, bar and club and will act as a hub for experimental music, culture and ideas.
SuperDeluxe was established in central Tokyo in 2002 as a meeting place for music, culture and independent artists to exhibit and perform cross-platform works, incorporating virtually any form of expression spanning sound, video, dance and theatre.
For its Sydney reincarnation, SuperDeluxe@Artspace celebrates Japanese and Australian culture and acts as a place for designers, artists, musicians, architects and other creatives to meet and share their work. It is co-curated by SuperDeluxe Tokyo, KDa, Namaiki, Artspace and David Elliott, Artistic Director, 17th Biennale of Sydney.
Thursday nights at SuperDeluxe@Artspace are devoted to the popular PechaKucha nights. Japanese for ‘the sound of conversation’, the popular PechaKucha events were born out of SuperDeluxe in Tokyo and are now hosted in over 260 cities worldwide.
PechaKucha discussion evenings provide an informal forum for young creatives to speak about their work and inspiration. There is a strict limit placed on speakers allowing them to speak to 20 images for 20 seconds each.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, SuperDeluxe@Artspace hosts an electric mix of local and international contemporary artists, performers and musicians including some of Japan’s top acts.
A vibrant cultural hub by night, during the day SuperDeluxe@Artspace is an art gallery, drop-in lounge and Biennale of Sydney orientation centre.
EVENT INFORMATION
SuperDelxue@ArtSpace will be open Thursday to Saturday nights during which time a bar will operate.
Entry is free although bookings are required due to venue capacity limits. More information on how to book will be posted here in the coming months.

This is fucking unbelievable.
Already booked tickets to The Dead C, Oren Ambarchi, Michael Morley, Hair Stylistics and a night curated by Lawrence English... looking into more too. Amazing stuff there!
Sydney can be shit sometimes but this is fantastic.
Really incredible
Pretty funny how The Biennale thought no one in Australia appropriate to curate such an event. Perhaps they are right in thinking that . ..
hey esquared, if you want to take a punt on something, try TETUZI AKIYAMA. I'm really disappointed I'll be out of town for the show as I've wanted to see him play for quite a while.
I really love the ''pre-existence'' album which is abstract acoustic guitar stuff and part of the Wooden Guitar series released a few years ago. Some of his stuff can vary quite a bit so not sure what is expected of rthe Sydney show. Could be worth a try though.

has anyone been to any of these shows? just wondering what times the bands usually play?
I haven't been, but booked tickets are to be collected between 7.30 and 8pm usually, after which uncollected tickets are available to anyone who rocks up. This would lead me to imagine that music starts around 8.30.
Oren gig started a bit later than that, I think, and was shorter than I'd expected. There was a laptop/DJ dude playing stuff (think Four Tet-ty) beforehand, though.
I think the pre-Oren sound-and-light show proper started at about 9? He played from about 10-10:30 if memory serves.
did oren really play for a half hour? crazy. seemed like ten minutes.
oh yeah, bump for dead c. really looking forward to saturday.
I know. Very surprised when it finished - felt so quick! There's a recording on Morris' blog if you haven't heard it...
Hoping I can get in for Friday for Michael Morley and nisennenmondai.
Should be a PM but what the hey : Frankie, did you, Switchy and Hellza pre-book for Friday and Sat?
Recording never lies!
I can never tell with drone stuff if it's been going for 5 minutes or 50. Can still pre-book for sat, have to queue at the door for friday.
Oh yeah. I downloaded that a while ago. burp.
All booked gunshot!
I may have a spare spot for both shows. PM if interested.

you always think you owe me money so in that case I would like $23.00 in 1 dollar coins wrapped in gladwrap. stat. you don't owe me monies ampie!
Me too. I just hit sydney!
!!!!
Coming to see you now gunshot :)
been listening to that Ambarchi recording a lot this week. great work Morris!
nisennenmondai were both amazing and a little boring at the same time. i enjoyed what they did but totally understood folks who couldn't get into it. i liked that they played 4 different pieces that all sounded different as their style of music could easily devolve into similarity. it was obvious they are amazing musicians so it was a little disappointing that they didn't really push beyond the boundaries of their genre enough. it was a little weird being in a artspace with 'arty' types too. the sound was fantastic though. would definitely recommend checking this band out if they play any other shows here in the future.
