‘Fantasms Magicks and a Raspberry sun’ is the new album from Matt Church and the Green Apples. Matt has been writing and collecting these songs for a while and recording started a while back and has continued up until the last part of 2009. The album is about going to the spaces in between the ‘spheres’ or a place in a self made reality reflecting desire and love and with a humanist concern. Over a few scotches the other night matt was talking about the Jodi Foster movie ‘contact’ where she meets her father at the end of the film on that alternate reality beach or that crazy crazy alternate dimension thing, there was much merriment in the room as matt recalled in his long drawl this movie and laughter abounded freely for the comparison is crazy but there is that crazy beach… Yeah it’s got the way out there vibe, with songs like ‘spinning sands’ finding matt in a strange void on a similar beach talking to a woman from the past that is seemingly omnipotent though is stuck in a ‘between’ dimension and yearns for a time long before and a way back to it. The singer wanting to return with her watching her harness the orb of the sun in her hands. The power of the Sun. The power of Women.
The obvious single is ‘Raspberry Sun’. A ditty of epic proportions with a vocal and guitar existing together singing a melodic tune about a place a long time in the future or past and someone looking back on youth. The Raspberry Sun metaphor is apparent in the artwork too. With Blakes famous watercolour summing up the album in a sense, is god old? Why would god be old? Why did Blake paint the Raspberry (Red) Sun symbolising the power of an elder God? Did he realise that a red giant is an old star, and that our own yellow main sequence Sun is relatively young?
Desire and power are themes throughout and a look at how we shape our own conciousness. Questions on what we don’t know shape the album and give it it’s unique flavour. Enjoy the new Green Apple Band. With drummer Steve linquist and Bassist Kathy Church helping out. Flipping over from the ‘sea peoples’ ridiculous (in that it is oblique in it’s offerings) but critically well received album ‘blue star’ this time it’s the full lyrical musings of matt on display. The Green Apple band was last heard on ‘Daisyworld’ though this Green Apple band is a lot different. Recorded live and in quick takes, matt was looking for a ‘Neil Young Zuma’ aesthetic to the sound, and the band recorded the songs in a similar manner to ‘zuma’, a small room and natural compression from it, not too loud, but loud enough, dry vocals. ‘Flying Fish’ and MARS are the extended guitar solo songs, but don’t be fooled listen closely and you hear the band clicking together dropping and starting like crazy horse, yep the crazy horse aesthetic, the dream matt has been searching for, over the time..the time of the raspberry sun…er. Yeah.
out through eeo records through mgm distribution.the album will come for the first time with lyrics and extended packaging. yep. all the art stuff. until then the artwork is a secret. of sorts. sort of. well maybe not but yeah..secret.
