Lets compile a thread of awesome Tote stories.

pretty much all of them, not sure where to start.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

That Datsuns gig circa 2003 when Dolf de Datsun was literally swinging from the rafters.

Mo  said about 2 years ago:

supporting Young Heart Attack there

just met a bunch of awesome people, drank a boatload, watched a killer YHA set, the staff were fantastic, gig was killer and did bad things with a lady....

what more could you ask for out of a rock n roll show really?

Getting drunk with djbollocks and a few others. It was a great night. Everyone made a special guest appearance. The band was good, although I forget who it was. I think it was Beaches.

Kill Devil Hills & James McCann

From what I can vaguely remember, seconded.

MATTPHEONIXxoxoxo  said about 2 years ago:

I have only been there once years ago when shitfaced, but it brings back the pain of loosing the hoey. Its a great fucking shame. How many more are going to go. What is the world coming to.

NYE 07/08 FTW.

so called ''secret'' TISM show in 2004... queue stretched around the block by 6pm and I got accidently slapped in the face by Ron Hitler Barassi.

postergirl  said about 2 years ago:

Haha, yes, that was a pretty good night zeechicks. I seem to remember making a spectacle of myself with a member of Digger during their set on the pool table.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 2 years ago:

I can remember playing scrabble there with an ex-chat, and a dude getting thrown out because he was being a loud idiot. Saying over and over again ''This is a punk pub! You need to be playing punk!''.

He then returned five minutes later with ''I'm back!'', he walked out a minute after that.

My band supported them that night - place was practically empty by the time we played (last). To be fair, we sucked.

Most memorable for me at the moment was Front End Loader + Head Like a Hole in 1993 (i think), and McLusky a few years back, maybe 2005?

Inactivist  said about 2 years ago:

Any Blacklist gig there, throwing down a pot per song, people tossing empties at the band, and degenerating into a sweat and beer soup.

But particularly the New Bomb Turks in '99. The singer was like a pint-sized Elvis on Elvis-level amphetamines. He hung from the rafters, grabbed a dude's hat and shoved it down his pants and generally behaved like a drunken monkey. And we loved it.

Oh T.o.t.e.

One of my fave gigs I ever saw there was Billy Childish and the Buff Medways in 2005ish?

I've had so many fantastic nights there that I can't remember all of them, they just sort of melt into one long, giant awesome night out.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 2 years ago:

I also had a beer there before I got married. Calmed me down good.

astrousersasmind  said about 2 years ago:

Recently...last year's Chapterfest was awesome for being so un-Tote....anciently, I loved seeing Dirty 3 there in 1995 when they were an unknown entity. First time I cried at a song was sitting on the red carpet while someone played Buffalo Tom's 'Taillights Fade' really loudly over the PA (I was 17! With a broken heart!)...so many awesome shows...

Any night where I get to work that BBQ is my favourite.

Bruce, can I do a BBQ tomorrow?

i know! hilarious.

poofpoof  said about 2 years ago:

My fondest memories are of the Rock n Roll high school nights in the mid nineties. 4 or 5 bands back to back of all or almost all female musicians.

You'll never see that in Melbourne again on a regular basis.

The Tote and the Arthouse were unrivaled in their support of the 100+ bands at RocknRoll HS, giving them (us) live experience where other venues wouldn't bother.

sister  said about 2 years ago:

well, I'm still pretty peeved that the Tote closed down while I down at the beach, especially as the weather really sucked.

I have seen so many bands at the Tote over the last 26 years or so it's hard to find a best night. 22nd Sect, Venom P Stinger, Magic Dirt, Cosmic Psychos, Eddy Current, a fund-raiser for Bruno, Chris H's farewell upstairs with Pink Stainless Tail playing.

But today while trying to clean up and reorganise my life, I perused a diary from 1986 and came across this entry from Friday January 10. I'm quoting it whole so you can really get a sense of what a snooty judgemental cow I was.

''Speaking of wanking, R, C, F and I went to the Tote (R and I primarily to see the Seminal Rats). Unfortunately the Seminal Rats were supporting and we only got to see three songs. They were v. good. Unfortunately there's a fine line b/w heavy Detroit rock and heavy metal. SR come under the former and the unbearable Hard Ons (sic) the latter.''

Sorry the hard ons. I think I objected to your name mostly.

Why on earth is that something you should apologise to the Hard Ons for? You've actually complemented them. Given the two options you've decided to choose between, they'd much rather be described as heavy metal than as a ''heavy Detroit rock'', i.e. fashionistic, trend driven, garage rock band.

I'm going to tell Blackie about this little quote. He will find it hilarious.

Was on Facebook under ''the bones of the Tote'' or something similar. Can't remember who had it on their profile.

LaxCharisma  said about 2 years ago:

I never got to go there as much as I would have liked but playing there supporting SALMON was pretty rad and attending day 1 of the Bang! Festival was also quite awesome...

Hellzapoppin  said about 2 years ago:

Rolling/dancing on the floor with Killerkitty pissed majestically whilst Mildred Pierce played one Tuesday evening.

Doing Hot Dog With The Lot in the carpark was also awesome.

SGH  said about 2 years ago:

Ha that Hot Dog WIth The Lot incident. How come it only seemed to screen in Brisbane?

Hellzapoppin  said about 2 years ago:

I think it screened in Newcastle as well. Seems they have a dvd out, I intend to see if that episode is on there.
