Craig Mathieson's book Playlisted

poofpoof  said about 2 years ago  or at  12:42PM on Thursday, December 31 2009 in chat

Anyone read this yet?

I wrote recently that Craig Mathieson wears the crown of Australian rock journalism. Allow me to elaborate. He’s recently released Playlisted: Everything You Need To Know About Australian Music Right Now, his third music-related book, and his byline has regularly appeared in Rolling Stone, Juice, Mess+Noise, and Fairfax news publications. He’s even got a Wikipedia entry.

Note to jose; apparently you do not wear the crown.

drugshakehands  said about 2 years ago:

all three threads about this book should really be merged.

drugshakehands  said about 2 years ago:

agreed, robert forster's book should be better than it is. it's probably too hard to occupy the role of both critic and artist.

i wear the crown around these parts. anyone who disagrees gets banned. i got a big red button next to all of your handles and i ain't afraid to use it.

poprocks96  said about 2 years ago:

Ha, remember when Jose wore a crown to 161?

good piece chrisj!

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Mathieson's book is well written. I liked the chapters about The Casanovas, Daughter Boy Jao and the Freudian analysis of Muscles.

toadphoney  said about 2 years ago:

I agree timewaster. In fact, when I was having tapas with Nic from Jet - he was singing the praises of the piece.

Oliver from DBJ wasn't nearly so appreciative. Last time we spoke he was kind of indifferent to it all.

But you know what? Its like molly told me I we were on that cruise together; ''sometimes.. you just have to say fuck 'em''.

philtripp  said about 2 years ago:

Nice book, love craig and his works but th publisher let him down with a lack of promotion. So we decided not to carry it on the bookstore though we sold hundreds of copies of his previous books.

it needs to be released as an ebook on kindle (as should his previous titles) as well as available as a Pdf or HtML copy like we did with When The writ hits the fan. there's nothing wrong with the content but there are so many more ways to distribute it beyond the physical.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Ha ha. I don't think that Nic would read that book. Although unlike his brother Chris, Nic can read.

timewaster  said about 2 years ago:

Kindle shmindle.

Apart from Bob Lefsetz (who never shuts up about the Kindle), I can't name a single person who's actually got one of those things.

Long live REAL books.

philtripp  said about 2 years ago:

That's maybe because you live in Australia where it's just been introduced. I remembr the same talk about iTunes...

I love real books too but the convenience of this device and dowloading books and saving money is an incredible shift. BTW, I bought four DVD box sets and three physical books from Amazon today. We also sold four copies of The Writ and six of the AMID app.

goa figure...

shortrockus  said about 1 year ago:

i found this book at some newtown shops today. looks like a really good read so far. i really liked the hi fi days book too

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

have just purchased this online, hope it doesn't take long to arrive, loved the sell in.

juice_terry  said about 1 year ago:

It's great but he's got questionable taste...but don't we all

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

arrived today :)

pfinger18  said about 1 year ago:

Just read it. Pretty good book, totally agree with the INXS chapter. Apparenlty he's pissed off a few Kylie fans, but that's easy to do. Most of the book is now available to read on Google books.

Quote from Chris Johnston' article:

...the accepted wisdom that Forster is the best music critic in Australia...

Really? Who decided this?

chrisj  said about 1 year ago:

a sort of a mainstream view i guess. plus he won a big prize for apparently being that.

but craig is better

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

i didin't enjoy Playlisted anywhere near how much i enjoyed The Sell In, dunno why, maybe the subject matter.

mrsjackwhite  said about 1 year ago:

crackwhore - did it take you 5 months to read it? Maybe thats why you didn't enjoy it?

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

exact opposite actually, read it in an afternoon, maybe that's why.........ya bloody smartarse !

stevereich  said about 1 year ago:

Forster raved about vampire bookend as the best band in the world right now in the monthly... Credibility crushed

crackwhore  said about 1 year ago:

Saw this in Readings today for $5. It's a great read - anyone who hasn't got a copy yet should pop in and get one.

This public service announcement was brought to you by tigers and the number 5.

anonymous  said about 9 months ago:

which readings?

tigers  said about 9 months ago:

Carlton

tigers  said about 9 months ago:

But it was on their bargain table - so my guess is all the Readings stores are selling it for that. Remainder stock.

anonymous  said about 9 months ago:

excellent.

tugboat  said about 9 months ago:

I hope one day my novel will be on the bargain table.

anonymous  said about 9 months ago:

poprocks96  said about 8 months ago:

Hey mathieson, I agree with you article in The Age. I tuned in this week for the first time since Kerry had left and was curious as to why I had to watch some boring segment on a wildlife park in Queensland.

''Playlisted'' on sale for 90% off at the Borders closing down...
