whathaveyou  said about 2 years ago:

Oz Post have long had a reputation of being union busting arseholes. Apparently their latest pay offer was for a cut. Privatisation and profit gouging has a great record all round.

louis  said about 2 years ago:

i got mail yesterday, but almost nothing last week. thankfully yesterday's mail included the last two christmas presents that were coming by post so i'm good.

hang in there posties! Aus Post are cunce.

kabukiboy  said about 2 years ago:

aus post shops are like fucking gift stores these days. just do yr fucking job ya cunce - don't sell me hard drives, teddy bears and shitty golf books. take my letter and deliver it - and don't charge me extra just cos it doesn't 'slide easily' thru the slot! thank god for the little post shop near my work. they're fucking awesome - sweet and polite and always do the best rate.

I got the best fucking water cooler from a post office once. Sadly it filled with mould. The power of gin can not keep it away.

In other highly related news my dad is a postie and they're not happy about going on strike as they don't get paid and this is a big money winning month for the cunts. Strike against E cards

moo-core  said about 2 years ago:

Me too. I got a package on Saturday, but it was supposed to be accompanied by another package. I think I'll have to do some calling up of local post offices to see if it's waiting there for me.

moo-core  said about 2 years ago:

Where the fuck are my goods?!?!

katiepotatie  said about 2 years ago:

apaprently there are trucks full of mail sitting inside warehouses around melbourne bc the sorting centres are overflowing and cant fit any more mail. a friend who works in IT at aus post head office was even put on mail sorting duties this week to try and take up some slack lol

whathaveyou  said about 2 years ago:

Those bullshit shops exist cos the profitable parts of the business were privatised. So now any cowboy can own themselves a post office and stock the fucker with teddy bears and water coolers. Part of the new agreement they were offered included having to see OzPost's special doctor Nick if they wanted a sickday.

theblacklodge  said about 2 years ago:

try living and working through their EBA7 .... been going on for 3 years., we don't have to see 'doctor nick' ... yeah we're on strike but fuck me we actaully work HARD ....feel free to cut me down.

I used to work at Australia Post when this started happening. What management would do was do a deal with the unions, most departments would get a 'slight' pay rise, and one department would have their pay totally cut. Most people would vote for it because they got a slight pay rise, and the number of votes coming from the department getting a pay cut was too small to sway the vote. didn't matter if the union explained this to people, employees voted selfishly. They did several negotiations a year until after a few years every department had had a massive pay cut. We went from $24 an hour part time to award rate of something like $16 an hour when it happened to us. That's when I quit.

Assholes.

moo-core  said about 2 years ago:

Fuck that. What a pack of cunce Aus Post management is.

outerspacextrapnel  said about 2 years ago:

poofpoof  said about 2 years ago:

Assholes.

But on second thoughts, in the grander scheme of things (the more grand scheme of things?)

This is really just one of the first symptoms of Australia having to come to terms with the fact that it's going to have to share its wealth with the rest of the world, as developing nations develop. Which inevitably will mean a drop in Australia's standard of living. Because the entire world cannot live at our quality of life.

What do I mean by this?

Well, it makes sense it happens with post early. Let's use post as an example to explain this phenomenon.

The postal service in Australia is fucked.

Post relies on a very weird 'trade' with other countries.

We agree to deliver incoming (foreign) postal items in our country in exchange for them delivering ours. People buy postage locally (Australia Post gains revenue) to send items overseas, and people overseas buy post in foreign countries to send items here. Australia Post incurs expenses in delivering those overseas items locally.

In the past, when postal trade usually occurred between countries of similar wealth status, we'd send them some shit and they'd send us some shit and roughly it was an equal trade.

The equality of this trade has been skewed by the fact that we have far fewer items being exported through the postal system than are coming in.

So the ratio of revenue from international post to expenses incurred in distributing post coming in from overseas is changing to the detriment of Australia Post. Australia Post's revenue from international post within Australia is lesser than the effort they are incurring in distributing items coming in from overseas.

This is largely due to online sales.

It's far cheaper for overseas countries (especially America which has weirdly cheap international postal rates) to send items to us, than it is for us to send items to them.

We were selling Tshirts through a website a few years ago. Boing Boing loved the product but loudly proclaimed the postal costs seemed inordinately high. Which they are. Australia Post charges stupid amounts for outgoing packages. They also have a fucked pricing system where a slight jump in weight will push you into a much higher postal rate. With our Tshirts, the medium and large sizes would jump into a large parcel category with a $10 increase in price. This was due to the increase in weight with the size, which pushed it out of a large letter category into a package category. The small Tshirts we could squeeze into a large letter price category, but 10grams extra weight meant a massive jump in postal price.

Anyway, as we buy more products from overseas, always because they are cheaper, which is due not only to cheaper post but also to foreign countries having way lower taxes on items like books, this results in Australia Post having to deliver more items from overseas compared to those people overseas are buying from us.

To compensate they increase the local post prices, further exacerbating the problem.

In the bigger scheme, this is a result of the fact that people overseas, including in America and the UK, are already living with a lower 'first world' quality of life than we are. Average housing and medical is far lower than ours, as is 'minimum wage' (where it exists).

Long term as international trade increases we are going to have to adjust to a more equalized quality of life. Wages will be the first place we feel this.

All hail the apocalypse.

i wonder how much mail we'll get today...

charlesincharge  said about 2 years ago:

how do you send mail to japan - in english characters? likewise, how do they send it here?

King_Rat  said about 2 years ago:

I got many a thing through to China one the english dials.

Well one or two things. It all works both ways.

kabukiboy  said about 2 years ago:

generally it will be in english or the characters for the receiving country

whathaveyou  said about 2 years ago:

Or so the narrative goes.

US corporations recover their bottom line after the GFC, but it needs to be a ''jobless recovery'' in order to stabilize profit. Australian banks needed 4 billion in taxpayer funds for deposit guarantees, but still increased their margins last year. But away from conspiracy theories, and to Ozpost...

''the corporation yesterday reported it suffered a 39.7 per cent slump in net profit to $260.6million this year''

Why does a publicly owned company making 260 million dollars need to be thrashing its workforce? I get the general point being made above, but it doesn't seem to square with everyday examples.

Finally receieved my new keycard in the post... just in time for new years. Christmas was shit without it.
