Bent Acidfolk Guru or the Godfather of Bruised Soul?
Pip Proud is a 60s poet and songwriter from Melbourne who made two records for one of the more adventurous labels of that era, Polydor International, before taking a 30-year break and reemerging again in 1995.
A few months after he recorded the opening song “I Deceived You To Make You Smile,” which contains the line “You look so shit, I wish I was blind,” Pip suffered a debilitating stroke that in the coming weeks robbed him of his sight. Pip is in good humor about this -- he’s the one who pointed it out, advising to be careful what you wish for -- and continues to write lucid poetry like mad, even if he can’t play guitar anymore (some wiseass might take issue with the assumption that he ever could). If Catch a Cherub is the end of his recording career, this is the perfect way to go out:
“Let’s catch a cherub, they come flying around the candlelight -- we’ll tie one down and make him talk of love and why it hurts sometimes.”

Born June 31, 1877 in Pahrump, West Virginia, Algernon Otmer Duvall began his musical career on the vaudeville stage as end-man in Lew Dockstader's Minstrels. He fought in a bicycle squadron in Ypres during World War I, where he received a crippling dose of the Hun's mustard. Returning home, he made ends meet working at a sausage factory in Harrington Delaware from 1921 until 1989. He took up the banjo in 1991 as physical therapy for his pleurisy. He went on to master the alto kazoo at the age of 118. "Al" Duvall attributes his remarkable longevity to a daily dram of Hamlin's Quinsy Balsam.ty to a daily dram of Hamlin's Quinsy Balsam.

ba bahhhh
it's free?
I saw the promotional film "De Da De Dum", made for the release of Pip's first '60s album, the other night. I still don't quite know what to make of it. He sounded horrible and inept, which I usually like but in his case I think I'm going to make an exception. Interesting film though - just him and a girl who looked like him walking around Sydney doing bugger all and being stared at by the natives.
Now if only Emperor Jones would convince Galbraith and Jefferies to venture this way..
I've got a song you might like, Ron. I'll put it in the gmail account tonight, if I remember.
free! nice!
Uh oh. I've made myself a target for a barrage of horrible, inept music, haven't I.
But since it's you, I am a-tremble with anticipation. It's not The Pits again is it? Though I do enjoy the two songs I have of theirs.
no, it's Pip Proud.
Oh, ok, makes sense. Post away then, qm.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the funniest fucking thing I've ever read.. where's Donat when you need him!
sounds very interesting..
Yeah, you were right, qm, I do like that a lot.
Who the fuck's Donat? Was he in The Pits?
yes, but not on those two recordings
Sorry, this is nothing to do with Pip Proud, but do youse Brisbanites revere The End? Or have they been completely forgotten there, as they have everywhere else?
Should've been a pm?
I think there would be more interest if their recordings were easier to access ala leftovers, razar, etc.
Yeah. I've got a tape of stuff that came out on Hot and it's great. I'm not sure if it was even released on vinyl but I don't think it was.
tonight... free... good...
Full report pls. Although the poor bastard can't play guitar anymore. hope it isn't just him toasting over someone playing with an oscillator, which is great, don't get me wr

There was some good footage of her playing at wmfu a few years back.. fun fun
Pip and band
So sad Pip's gone. That show with band was one of the best things I've seen.
I heard this on the weekend. Sad news indeed.
That was an awesome show
i just heard about his death from someone who was at the funeral. Have not seen it reported anywhere?
a shame - would love to read a proper tribute
