my kitten

tessoire  said about 5 years ago  or at  8:41PM on Monday, November 13 2006 in chat

is crying like a maniac...and i put her in front of her food n water bowl and she doesn't want none. is is it normal for kittens to cry hysterically for no reason???

PaulsGrandfather  said about 5 years ago:

How long have you had her?

She might still be pining for mum. Have you tried sitting down with her and giving her a cuddle? Get a woolly item, put it in your lap or higher up on your chest and see if she wants to snuggle.

shaun  said about 5 years ago:

how old is the kitty? Is she/he old enough to be on heat?

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

she's eight weeks old. i haven't even had her for a week but none of my other cats have ever cried like this. it sounds like she's in pain or something.

i'm pretty sure she's too young to be on heat.

PaulsGrandfather  said about 5 years ago:

Hmmm... it does sound to me like she's just suffering from some separation anxiety. It may have just hit her that something's missing (her mum).

If she was in pain, I don't think she'd be that vocal. Cats normally just find a tiny space to curled up in when that's the case.

*curl

n she's had a little vomit 3 times so i'm kinda worried she's sick

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

i guess i just wait n see what happens

PaulsGrandfather  said about 5 years ago:

Ok, now I'm worried too.

Check her mouth first and see if she's got something stuck in her mouth/gum/throat. If you can't find anything, it might really be a good idea to take her to the Lort Smith or something (assuming you're in Melbourne). If you've got good reason to believe something's wrong, don't wait.

Angus  said about 5 years ago:

yes take her to Lort Smith Animal Hospital, they are really good.

cats shouldn't cry hysterically for no reason.

dammit tessoire, now I won't be able to sleep tonight. I'll keep wondering how the cat is doing.

Angus  said about 5 years ago:

is it still crying???

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

three times in the past 5 days - not just today. i just put it down to her not liking the food the vet gave us.

there's nothing in her mouth. i don't know what lort smith is cos i live in sydney. i think she's just upset but i can't think what's upsetting her so i can't calm her down.

i've had pussey cats all my life n when they're sick they always hide so that's why i'm so confused.

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

she's still crying but not as loudly

Angus  said about 5 years ago:

maybe it has a splinter in its paw?

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

i'll have a little look now

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

nothing i can see. do you think maybe she has a complex??? i knew a dog once that was scared of cutlery and umbrellas

flynn  said about 5 years ago:

its probably a bit late tonight to call the vet. but maybe in the morning you could call the vet and just have a chat. if they've already seen the cat in the recent past, they might have some ideas on what could be wrong. most vets are happy to discuss things over the phone if its not too serious.

being so young, its hard to know if its out of character, or just her getting freaked out a little by her new surrounds without mum. Does she have a bed to curl up in... a small space with a teddy?

Angus  said about 5 years ago:

maybe its just a ploy by the kitten to get more attention?

PaulsGrandfather  said about 5 years ago:

What flynn said.

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

she's getting tired n sooky but still crying a bit, not as much as before though which is a relief.

i guess calling the vet tomorrow is the best bet. i think she'll crash out pretty soon, she has that look about her.

PaulsGrandfather  said about 5 years ago:

Give her a kiss from me.

Poor li'l thing.

i tried to get him home! he wasn't coming when he called. i got up at midnight, at 3 am and at 7 to call him, and he finally came in at 7 and collapsed on the lounge.

tessoire  said about 5 years ago:

de.foxus  said about 5 years ago:

thanks HEB!

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

How's she settling in?

zoomusicgirl  said about 5 years ago:

extremely well - thanks for asking!

she's a ragdoll, so she's naturally relaxed, but it did take her a little while to come to terms with all the other crazy animals and people in the house.

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Sure the fact that you're paying her special attention is helping

zoomusicgirl  said about 5 years ago:

yes i am...but then i feel bad for my other pets and i have to be extra nice to them so they don't feel jealous.

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

How much of a menagerie do you have?

zoomusicgirl  said about 5 years ago:

3 cats, a dog, a bunny and a guinea pig.

HEB  said about 5 years ago:

Sounds like a real juggling act!

easier with a ragdoll

zoomusicgirl  said about 5 years ago:

hehe, poor kitties.

my mum just got a kitten, it's name is totoro. she's trying to eat my skirt. she's utterly insane and i love her so. kittens are the greatest thing ever when you're in a crap mood.
